This is a great song written (I think) by the wonderful songwriter, Gordon Lightfoot. This is the long, drawn-out version...probably done so becasue of the occasion of Woodstock which, for all of its inconvenience and rain and excessive drug use must have been remarkable. I would never have gone but, know friends who were there. The song is a "longing-forer" and contains a beautiful melody wrapped around some major 7th chords that always pull people in. No chord on earth can do that. Love 'em!
Always makes me emotional in a bittersweet way... Thx for posting! Also some extra info for fans; some shots of the audience might be from other perfomances. I noticed shots being used on multiple performances on several Woodstock Dvd's so they are mixed and mashed.
Can anyone tell me if a record version of this performance exist? I'd like to listen to it on vinyl, but prefer the woodstock live than studio. Thanks
He's touring the U.S. right now, with accompanying guitar(Walter Parks) and cello(Stephanie Winter). He played here this Sunday the 14th. I enjoyed it. I especially enjoyed the cello lady. Her and her playing were very beautiful.
Search Richie Havens at eventful(dot)com for tour dates/locations.
Seen Richie live twice. My generation has been so lucky to have great performers like Richie singing and playing for us for the last 40 plus year. Man, I feel so blessed.
Great song and part of history: Richie opened Woodstock this day, although he was scheduled to go on fifth. Judging by the crowd, this might have been the VERY FIRST song that day.
The album take is MUCH faster, but you gotta dig this slow and soulful version too.
And Riche's still doing it out there for us. See him if you can ! !
Fuck yeah! RICHIE!

In my opinion, he was the best one in Woodstock. Pure music, straight for the soul and the heart.

If you are a fan of RICHIE HAVENS....you have to search for a KRIS KRISTOFFERSON song called " THE HAWK" that RICHIE did some years ago.
