Walking On The Water - The Golliwogs [San Francisco, California] - 1966 - "GOOD first impression. Nice guitar riffs. John Fogerty's vocals (Creedence Clearwater Revival) are recognizable even at this early stage." - Creedence Clearwater Revival [Box] (Fantasy Disc 1)-2001.
NOTE: This 6 CD Box compilation is all you'll ever need by them.
...remastering the entire catalog and issuing them in lavish editions with rich liner notes and slipcases.
It has a Doors feel around 2:18. I have never heard this version; it's quite interesting. The version on the first CCR album was extremely well done. Thanks for this great upload.
Is it Tom Fogerty singing? Can't make out the difference between Tom's and John's voices. This is also a good version but the song is actually none of my favorites. Nevertheless, I'd like to have these Golliwogs and other pre-Creedence songs on a big pre-CCR album. Many of their less known songs are better than the hit songs of others.
This is the original version, "Walk on the Water" by CCR was in their first album Creedence Clearwater Revival and wad a remastered version of this song actually named "Walking on the Water". Listen to both songs and hear the differences.
There are more instrumental changes in this version!
My mom was a promoter in the early and late 60s in Napa California. I remember her Booking The "Gollywogs" but for some reason the show was cancelled. Very soon after that they scored a hit with Suzie Q and became Creedence Clearwater and the rest is history.
I like more this version to be honest. because sounds darker and more spiritual accomplish the lyrics. This is my humble opinion, don't get me wrong i love ccr version too.
Amazing how John's expressive smoky voice has developed over the years. In this record it sounds still a bit teeny like, but already typical. Best decision however to let this genious be the vocalist.
I love this song and this original version it has a monster hook in it , and a spiritual message , maybe John had some help with all of those amazing CCR tunes .
It sounds like John to me. Judging from the earlier date I'm going to assume that the record was sped up during production to cut running time down to the 3:11 we have hear to keep it far from the four minute mark.
Sounds like Tom. Deeper sounding voice. But I don't know for sure. The CCR version fits the idea of the song much better. Tight high pitched vocal and spooky guitar licks.
I think this is John singing and he would have been what...19 or 20? Tom's voice is 'thinner'. The main reason though is that if you listen closely he sings: with my own eye [not eyes]...from the other sigh [not side] and...do not be afray [not afraid]. Very typical JF, swallowing the last consonant.
Love this version too! Can't believe they never charted as the Golliwogs.
On second listen I think you are correct. It's John but if you listen very close he does use d, t, s, but it's an old recording trick to cut back on pops etc when close miking.
Tom usually enunciates quite clearly and John nearly always slurs word endings, especially with hard consonants...live or recorded. Love him for it actually!
tom claimed he wrote this song entirely himself, it was published jointly under a partnership agreement. john sang it.

I like it. Sounds like John singing, but thought that Tom was lead singer in this band. Does anybody know?
cindylcain59 10 months ago
@cindylcain59 Tom was the lead singer until John took over in 1966. So this one was sung by John.

This song is amazing. Reminds me of Alvin Lee (Ten Years After) with some of the guitar sounds in here.
