Great idea putting bows on them while they are in the garden I've got 9 russian tortoise and they are so hard to keep track off so I'm going to do the same this summer thanks for shearing :-)
@cricketmuncher911 Nope - Mojave Desert Tortoises. The bows were only on their shells for a few minutes at a time as I have a huge garden and it was easier to find them that way!
I have a Russian tortoise. I take good care of her, I feed her every day, and I give her fresh water once every week. I don't let her outside often though. But I have her enclosure next to a window where I it lets in sun light. I keep the shade open all day so she gets some sun light. But should I actually take her outside instead?
@ohSpazeh if you let them live inside you could use a reptile uv lamp. toroises need lots of sunlight, especially russian tortoises. they live normally in kazakstan or afghanistan which is very dry and sunny. so if its wet, cold and cloudy at your place better let them live inside with the uvlamp. else: let them enjoy the sun :). windows filter some of the uv light, so this is no solution.
No you definitely cannot keen them indoors, they will become deformed and die from lack of sunlight and they are meant to be out in the desert. The only reason I had to keep them inside for one winter was because of a shell disease but now they are back outside in their burrows year-round.
@cheesiepeas1 I'm no expert. However, I'm quite sure that is not true. You can safely keep them indoors year-round as long as you have a proper UV lamp and let them roam around outside in the warmer seasons.
I love the video of Crusty and his hitchhiker! Yes they do hibernate now - a couple of years ago Poppy had a major operation on a shell problem so I had to keep them indoors and out of hibernation one winter, but they are back to normal now and snoozing in their burrows in the garden
Poppy and Benders are so cute. I have a horsfieldii called Crusty so i'm also a tortoise lover. Lol. I take it you don't hibernate them so what do you do in the winter? I just have a heat lamp(I'v read that UV lamps aren't good for there eyes) and he goes outside on sunny days. Take a look at my video of him giving a frog a piggyback.
They can reach about 24 inches long at the biggest - depending on age and nutrition. My two 'babies' will be five in August and are about 9" long, my big boy who is about 50 years old is only 14" as he has spent most of his life in the wild foraging.
Purely as a visual aid so I could keep track of them when they were in the garden - I have a big garden and it was easy to lose them when they were small

The bow's on their backs are pretty genius....but I wouldn't leave them on.... as their shells are constantly growing. :) They are sweet! I have 4!

@cheesiepeas1 My dad won't let me keep a tortoise outside, but if I can get the proper lights will my tortoise be OK inside when I get him or her?

Wouldnt the rubber bands put some sort of constrain on their shell over time? Good idea but i think a rubber band would not be ideal to use.
MetalRunner4 2 years ago
Absolutely - the rubber band was only ever on for minutes at a time when I was trying to keep track of them!
cheesiepeas1 2 years ago
Ahh i see, for some reason my first thought was that you had kept them on for longer periods of time.
MetalRunner4 2 years ago
why do u hav the thing on the top of them?

when you feed them dandelions, do you just wash them? and which part do they eat, the yellow or the leavey stem? :D be a great help to know~
FurrieRabies 2 years ago
Just give them a quick rinse and give them the whole dandelions, flower, stem leaves, everything - they will eat it all
cheesiepeas1 2 years ago
Yup, just a flash of Christmasy inspiration!
