I worked at my local Blockbuster until it, and the rest here in Toronto, closed down this year. It was a dream job, and although it's something of an outdated already, I will always miss the culture of the Neighbourhood Video Store. People going to discuss and discover new movies, the regular customers' tastes, Staff Picks, people behind the counter who care about the product.... I look forward to telling grandkids some day about working in a store where people physically went to rent videos.
Ah, the good old days. I was a loyal customer until they brought back late fees. I went there one day and they told me I had 30 dollars in fees, and I never went back. I'm now perfectly satisfied with Netflix.
Blockbuster is definitely a big part of my childhood. My family and I used to go there on Friday nights and get movies. The had the best selection of Nintendo video games in the 80's and 90's.
I've never shopped at Netflix. We buy our DVDs from the store because none of those online plans are profitable for us - it is so rare that a good movie comes out that a monthly subscription is a waste of money. And screw iTunes, I want to have the box and the DVD. And screw BluRay, I will never sacrifice my DVD collection just for a tiny advantage. DVD is to BluRay what VHS is to LaserDisc, none replaced the other, they were just two different options.
To all you people saying nice things about Blockbuster- I run my own blockbuster video store and even things as progressively tough, people like you not only give people jobs, but you make the entertainment industry stay alive. Thanks from New Zealand :D
actually there is still blockbusters! i live just 20 mins away and i have bought 10 movies in the past 2 weeks with their 5 for 20$ no one can beat that .
Actually Blockbuster is making a big fucking comeback!!!! Their mail in service offers both games and movies as well as turning your return envelope at the stores and even getting access to the games and movies there, so fuck you netflix with your overpriced surcharges!!!
@dirratt Ditto. People are depending too much on the Internet. Hell why do people think Circuit City closed down? Because we have Newegg.com etc. Now everyone is buying online and stores are closing down. Makes one think about what will happen in 30 years. No more restaurants, Shops, Grocery stores, ETC.
Not here in Miami, Blockbuster still good in my Neighborhood and ima keep renting cause there aint nothing more exciting about getting to watch a movie by driving to Blockbuster and search for it manually...as if you earned to watch it..everyone will be more fat if blockbuster closes down all stores..
The Blockbuster experience was walking through the aisles and checking out the cover of movies and commenting to your friends on how good/bad it might be. Then the candy and other snacks right before checking out on the counter was perhaps the best part of Blockbuster. Netflix doesn't do that, nor does Redbox for that matter. So until they close the Blockbuster in my neighborhood, there will be at least one eager customer ready to see a good one :)
already nostalgic for the dying elephant in the room, eh? Blockbuster reaps what it sows-it has gone out of it's way to give it's customers a hard time. Now everyone blames Netflix-give me a break. How about Blockbuster destroying "mom and pop" video stores, hmmm?
At least i could get original uncut movies at said "mom/pop" stores-Blockbuster received cut movies developed especially for their stores, They suck and I am glad they are going!
Haven't been to Blockbuster since 2002. Back when Netflix was starting to get popular and Redbox wasn't even around yet. At that point it was pretty much dead. I went to Blockbuster one last time in May '07 and I was the only one there :D. The store has been closed since 2008. Even though I miss the Nostalgia I don't miss the fucking prices! way too much for a VHS tape. Not to mention they fee you like hell. So yeah, goodbye Blockbuster. See you in hell.
lolz it's sad how these stores are disappearing now. They're a staple of my childhood. My favorite part of going there was those blue and yellow balloons on sticks with the logo on them. When I went to check out a store that was closing, they had a whole bag of those balloons for 2 dollars. ha! and I bought them.
We are losing the Blockbuster here in San Marcos, Texas. I'm rather sad to see it go. You won't find a movie made circa 1939 in a typical Red Box machine. You can also check out more foreign films in a video store. Yes, I know Blockbuster had an outdated business model. They failed to change with the times. I knew the strategy of getting rid of late fees would backfire (late fees accounted for about 15% of revenue). Still, I will always miss BBV.
Shut the fuck up people! We have late fees cause it encourages people to actually bring back the movies. ALSO we require a credit card on file in case anyone tries to flee with the movie(s). You take off with it, you're gonna pay for it! It'll be put on ur card. It's called COLLATERAL!
"PERFECT Video store"??? Most stores had NO laserdiscs, just crappy VHS, and of course no porn on any format since that was against company policy. If they were perfect they wouldn't be in the trouble they're in right now.
When nutbuster video was the only game in town we had no choice as we were held hostage.
Hulu.
Netflix.
Good luck with that kiosk thing and competing against Redbox.
Too bad for the employees at nutbuster video stores but now you'll know how the mom&pop video stores that nutbuster video drove out of business fee/felt.
Blockbuster has online customer service that answers within 24 hours. BB has new releases 28 days before NR or redbox. BB rents online games. You can trade mail movies and games, for instore ones. BB trades scratched diskst right away at your neartest BB. With the right device you can stream new movies with BB. As a NF subscriber I can fairly say that BB outshines NF. I keep NF for convenience, there are no new movies on NF, and the TV shows are segmented. Why R people happy accepting crap?
lol that is completely untrue, blockbuster doesn't own the rights to do that. In fact, go into Blockbuster and find ANY movie that has missing scenes. You won't.
@MrAirbuster57 They didn't edit movies, but since they had a policy against carrying anything rated NC-17, there were a few movies like Showgirls that were issued in edited versions primarily to please Blockbuster. That's the main reason I'm enjoying watching them die right now.
Anybody else find it funny that if they had stuck with that commercial, they never would have gotten to be the big name they were? It looked so boring, I honestly think that the later cartoon commercial appealing to kids to make their parents take them there was that only thing that saved them in the early days. Of course, it doesn't help that it was generally hard to find them in the early years. I personally didn't have easy access to one until at least 95-96. Anyway, thanks for the upload.
great video. have some of you guys saw the wow cheats pack on warcraftbotsXinfo (replace X with .) ? it is fantastic, i just down loaded it. its got totally everything inside it, gold guides, bots, hacks, glitches and even the newest arena glitch. i perhaps should not tell people about this but at least it gives you all a fair opportunity to download it before i own all of you
@MattTheSaiyan My friends parents had to close their shop b/c of BB. I worked their at the time and ended up unemployed for 6 months when they closed. So I don't blame these people for being a bit sore.
@MattTheSaiyan They BOUGHT a few mom-and-pop stores and homogenized them. There was one store near where I worked, in a building that used to be a bank. They kept the vault the way it was and made it the horror section, it was pretty cool. They had painted murals around the rest of the store too, but then Blockbuster bought it up and turned everything generic. And that store is currently having its closing sale!
I remember late 80's through early 00's bbv was the king. Going into small gas stations and renting movies or small mom and pop stores. And hearing bbv was coming to town and all those place shut down.
Going to rent a movie is slowly fading away like the transistion from vhs to dvd. I remember going into bbv when the movies were changing over and thinking these dvd things will never replace the video tape.
Ahhhh, I remember years ago when some snotty Blockbuster employee gave us lip saying we were late on a rental return when we actually turned our rentals in early. It was that point where I stopped being kind and rewinding.
Sounds like Kelsey Grammer doing the voice over? I do miss going to video stores, but the stock just isn't good anymore. If it's not a new release or a popular older title, chances are you won't find it. I loved going to the video store after school on Fridays during the '90s to rent things for the weekend. If they could have more variety, I'd probably go back. As it is, Netflix is just much more convenient with greater variety.
@1989gamemaster now they're trying to make a comeback with their new "quick rent" kiosks n front of gas stations to combat redbox lol and even those are failing
I remember this commercial. I used to love this ad. The song was catchy at the end. Blockbuster Video...WOW!!! what a difference! I remember I used daydream this song in elementary school while the teacher was giving a lecture.
"WOW, what a difference" is right when you compare smaller chain video stores who rent out their movies for $3.00 a pop while Blockbuster is renting theirs at almost $7.00, which is about what it costs to go see these movies in the theaters! Blockbuster is the most expensive rental store in the U.S. and I can't wait for them to go out of business. Nothin but a fuckin ripoff. No late fees? Right, if you consider them charging you twice what the movie costs if you don't return it as no late fees!
@mochamist21 diddnt they always have late fees. i would keep a movie for a week and when i turned it in late by just half a day they would slip in a $2.00 late fee.
@AkitoJr Yeah, but that was before they implemented a "No Late Fees" campaign. I think if you kept a movie after a certain amount of time, they would charge you full price for it.
You know if someone would have told me 10-12 years ago that one day Blockbuster would be in danger of going out of business I would have said they were crazy.
too young for the clubs too young to drive on a saturday night i had to depend on my mom to drive me to blockbuster so i could rent a movie i used to watch you cant do that on television also to bad its not out on dvd
Wouldn't've been funny if Blockbuster turned out to be an extreme flop in the early 90's and went out of business? Then we could still have all those precious individual Ma and Pop shops and not these evil corporate owned BlockbLIsters all over the world!
@moznico Since Blockbuster will be dead soon....we can only hope Walmart is next (and I still hope Walmart never comes to the country I live in (Australia).....the whole economy would collapse!)
@MattTheSaiyan My boyfriend used to work at Wally World (thats how we call it in our area) and they would ripp off his hours and pay him nothing. So he retaliated by taking MP3's and other stuff from the billion dollar company...I KNOW THIS IS WRONG, but he justified himself his way....He worked overnites. lol
@MattTheSaiyan You're an idiot. Wal-Mart is the equivalent of RedBox, while the smaller stores that refuse to keep up with the times are the equivalent of Blockbuster.
@Supermassively You say I'm an "Anti-corporate crybaby", if so, then why do I have dreams to one day become rich enough to buy a whole bunch of TV stations, radio stations and a chain of milk bars?
I worked for Blockbuster as a second job in the summer of '99 (paying off some debts). It was the most horrifically managed retail firm for which I'd ever worked, and that's saying something. If Blockbuster does go belly-up, I'll be saying "Good riddance to bad garbage."
Didn't there also used to be a Blockbuster ad featuring cartoon children singing a jingle as they went though the various sections, that lasted the entire ad?
Yep, that commercial is actually right here on this site. if you search up ''Classic Nickelodeon Commercials 5'' on Youtube, towards the end of it that very commercial you described is shown. It aired in the late 1980s apparently.
(add &fmt=18 to the end of the url as shown above to watch in high quality, not that this clip is high quality to begin with, but works with all YouTube vids)
WOW, I love, "You Can't Do That on Television." I used to watch it all the time when I was a child...blue skies, Barthy burgers, girls....
Too bad the Blockbuster commercial clip has some serious lag in the recording. I think they had a couple of versions of this commercial. Thanks for sharing :D

@AkitoJr Yeah, but that was before they implemented a "No Late Fees" campaign. I think if you kept a movie after a certain amount of time, they would charge you full price for it.

And their stock closed today at 70 cents. The death knell may be around the corner, with Netflix shoveling on the dirt.

You know if someone would have told me 10-12 years ago that one day Blockbuster would be in danger of going out of business I would have said they were crazy.
jhwink 2 years ago 4
@jhwink Yeah and now look at Blockbusters stores, dropping like flies. Again, it's retribution for destroying the Ma and Pop shops across the world!

The Blockbuster in my neighborhood is closing down!

yup.

Wouldn't've been funny if Blockbuster turned out to be an extreme flop in the early 90's and went out of business? Then we could still have all those precious individual Ma and Pop shops and not these evil corporate owned BlockbLIsters all over the world!

I miss the video store that my brother and I could walk to when we were kids...

Blockbuster the new version of "wal-mart" at the time. Was everywhere and hyped up...now it's fading out in popularity...lol.

@moznico now its bankrupt lol
mramazingracist100 1 year ago
@moznico Since Blockbuster will be dead soon....we can only hope Walmart is next (and I still hope Walmart never comes to the country I live in (Australia).....the whole economy would collapse!)

@MattTheSaiyan My boyfriend used to work at Wally World (thats how we call it in our area) and they would ripp off his hours and pay him nothing. So he retaliated by taking MP3's and other stuff from the billion dollar company...I KNOW THIS IS WRONG, but he justified himself his way....He worked overnites. lol
moznico 11 months ago
@MattTheSaiyan You're an idiot. Wal-Mart is the equivalent of RedBox, while the smaller stores that refuse to keep up with the times are the equivalent of Blockbuster.
Anti-corporate crybaby.

@Supermassively You say I'm an "Anti-corporate crybaby", if so, then why do I have dreams to one day become rich enough to buy a whole bunch of TV stations, radio stations and a chain of milk bars?
MattTheSaiyan 10 months ago
I worked for Blockbuster as a second job in the summer of '99 (paying off some debts). It was the most horrifically managed retail firm for which I'd ever worked, and that's saying something. If Blockbuster does go belly-up, I'll be saying "Good riddance to bad garbage."

I forgot how 80s some early 90s commercials looked and sounded.
BigTMan1 3 years ago 5
Of course, you won't hear any business referring to themselves today as having a "difference," except maybe in the adult entertainment industry.
FascistFrenchman 3 years ago
Didn't there also used to be a Blockbuster ad featuring cartoon children singing a jingle as they went though the various sections, that lasted the entire ad?
"Wow! Fun and difference. Blockbuster Video"
FascistFrenchman 3 years ago
Yep, that commercial is actually right here on this site. if you search up ''Classic Nickelodeon Commercials 5'' on Youtube, towards the end of it that very commercial you described is shown. It aired in the late 1980s apparently.

watch?v=wcNseNs5XiU&fmt=18
(add &fmt=18 to the end of the url as shown above to watch in high quality, not that this clip is high quality to begin with, but works with all YouTube vids)
WOW, I love, "You Can't Do That on Television." I used to watch it all the time when I was a child...blue skies, Barthy burgers, girls....
Too bad the Blockbuster commercial clip has some serious lag in the recording. I think they had a couple of versions of this commercial. Thanks for sharing :D

LOL! I remember this well. I think that was around the time when our old Major Video store was bought out, and Blockbuster moved in. :)
