I first came to watch this video to see how fast the masters moved. I was looking for any thing just to see how fast they would be. I was a bit annoyed by the lack of movement. Now that I'm watching it from a kendo perspective, this video is amazing. Each side is trying to read the others next move and wating for the smallest opportunity to strike. Truly spectacular.
Goddamn... that video was tiring even to watch, the flow between them was just crazy... Impressive video, im really grateful you'd upload such a rare video up on youtube.
I loled at the guy in the comments who has the nerve to criticize a 10 dan... he obviously has never done kendo before in his life... (at least, at the time he wrote this.) 'I train swordfighting myself.' Funny. I don't think he understands just how fast those people really are. Btw... awesome vid!
That was the most perfect example of 平常心 (heijōshin) I've ever seen! Existían movimientos milimétricos que orignaban una respuesta, y luego retroalimentación, para dar lugar a un ciclo de reacciones casi imperceptibles a los sentidos.
@wakerofwind88 And how did you judge that hit?It was a perfect hit in the men.And this is Kendo, you run into your opponent's shinai all the time, the only thing matters is how you keep your vital parts away from it.And they didn't just stand still, they was constantly testing each other's mind.It was not only just a sword fight but also a test for durability and concentration, you get distracted for one moment at ít's over for you.
Thank you for this post, I like this because even thought there are few suts seen here, there is SO MUCH here that can be learned merely by observation. Very tense and also educational.
It's my understanding that there are 8 you can grade for, and then 9th and 10th Dan are given to people who make huge contributions to the kendo community.
@Fullmember100 It will come back eventually. We just have to train ourselves until some reaches a level that 8 dan is no longer applicable and must become a 9 dan and the same for 10 dan. This will take a long time though and many will still feel as though the rank isn't real...
@hatamoto68 mochida mojiri was the last 10dan and it was stated he was given the 10th dan because of his prfound teachings in his age his contributions to kendo and his unrivaled ability that far surpassed any other, thats why he was know as "the great swordsman"
one guy hit the men, but did the other guy's judan hit the attacker's tsuki? it's hard to tell. although he can't get the point for tsuki because there is no footwork, but usually if this happens judges may not give the men point if the opponent occupies the center.
umm... i'm pretty sure he was center when he hit the men... these guys were masters of control, they literally fought with their minds until the precise moment they could strike. imagine having center, and time freezing at that exact moment, that's pretty much when they strike
@metabolife yeah and when he hit the other one he ran into the other ones sword, did you notice that too? if they had real swords he propably even would have lost, since he would only hit the helmet, but ran into the sword of the other one
@Xiox047 unlike most people commenting here(just a guess), i am trained in sword fighting and trained beginners in our club, although we did late-middle-age european style one handed ( with shield or dual wielding) and two handed sword fighting, so i dont know much about kendo. but from my point of view the left one struck a armored area while running into the blade, since the right one got hit on the head i would consider this a draw.
im not judging who's winning, just showing my opinion
@wakerofwind88 I don't know about european styles but this is an utter victory to the left, the thing is he doesn't use a fast strike either, he completely traps the man on the right with his timing, and seizes and opening. A philosophy behind kendo, there are some other martial arts that share this same philosophy btw, is that You give your arm to cut his neck. also there are actually a lot of people lurking on youtube that are trained with sword fighting, a lot of posers as well too thou.. :|
@wakerofwind88 I'd agree that, practically, you want an absolutely clean hit since you may die as the defeated opponent "completes" his move. But watching the slow motion carefully, you'll see Mochida (left) hit men a split second faster, and then the right brought his sword up to the throat. In kendo, that split-second difference is all it takes, so this was a good hit. As a kendoist, I have my own feelings on the matter, but it's normal in kendo. It's also hard to see details on this old film.
Yep, if this were post-WWII, some reconstructionist, MacArthurian, redneck gaijin would have shouted out "hey, come on already, somebody do something!" after a couple of minutes of strategy. I agree that this is pure strategy and treating the art as if it were ultimately still about live swords. Very cool to be able to watch.
It is like with real swords. One hit and you're dead. During their long(very long) wait they tried to read their opponent. Read their minds.
If you make a move, the opponent will probably find a way to counter it. They had to find a move that had perfect speed and timing cause they were putting their entire life behind that one move.
@lordtains the problem is that real swords aren't made of wood and would'nt be as fast... and i don't think it's mind reading... but rather to make the opponent nervous and unconcentrated. as you can see the head attack took the right one completey by surprise, there was no defensive action
@joemanflyerepic i do know what i'm talking about because i train swordfighting myself and i do shotokan karate. so i guess u should be the one to "stfu"
@wakerofwind88 its the rhythm of your soul if you are preoccupied about keeping your head then your dead. if your preoccupied of letting the opponent think of keeping his head hes dead. kendo is the art of no comprehension
@lordtains yeah at first I approached this video with too much of an action oriented perspective. I was disappointed that "nothing much" went on. I imagined putting myself in that scenario and doing flashy things or how i'd make a vicious counterattack. But I realized that this how you get killed; creating an opening for the other to utilize. I realized the movements were so small and calculated because they weren't wasting anything. you're absolutely right!
yes, the apparent level of awareness and control looks fantastic, and so relaxed. So different to competition shiai, inspiring, thanks for up loading.
Wakerofwind88 is a retard he thinks that these guys don't know what their doing. These are the masters u asshole u r not 1 so stop acting like 1
