i just wonder why you do this vs. let the male keep them for the full term. lol. i usually let mine raise them until i can see the fish and notice that they are fairly large, then i catch the male and put him in a breeder net and he usually releases the babies ready to eat rotifers and baby brine.
You are very lucky. Mine swollows the eggs at day 6. That's why I do it. A lot of male, in captivity, will start dropping or eating the eggs - it's not really certain why yet. This was part of a research project to figure out how to artificially hatch the eggs if the male was no longer carrying them. It was done in hopes of getting more people to start raising banggais since the banggai cardinal has been placed on the endangered list.
+1 on natural birth. Lol. Easier and you don't have to stress the fish by taking it out of the water and shaking it with your dirty fingers. That seems mad cruel. I wouldn't even pick up a betta with my fingers nevermind a $15 bangaii...
I would vote for natural birth as well, if it was always possible. But not all males are willing to hold in captivity. Banggais are currently on the endangered list, and the push is to find an alternative method to harvesting them from the ocean. So far this method seems is the most promising. It does not harm the male, you are able to get more babies from this method than if you allow the male to carry them full-term. Obviously, he's not really starving after all..he's swallowing eggs.
Good info! Yeah I know they're endangered which is why I bought a male and female (which I know buyingtechnically also supports people taking them from reefs which kinda works backwards... But I hope to breed a bunch and sell them to friends for very cheap instead of them having to get them at LFS's because I don't want LFS's carrying them anymore. They can't go extinct, i'd be upset. Atleast we'd still have the cute Pajamas though... =]
I know it looks a harsh, but I am barely holding the fish with very little pressure - that's why I keep dropping it. I've done this to the same fish over and over again probably 30+ times over the years and it doesn't seen to affect it. He's really stubborn because I've talked to others who's fish release the eggs as soon as they catch them in the net. Mine refuses to give them up.
