Their German superiors send them to certain death in the first fight with Red Army-80% of them(about 10 thousands) died in a couple of days.They were only -I don't know if I said correctly- the "canon fodder". Not all Germans were bad people. Many went in the military before Hitler came to power simply because there weren't any jobs. They didn't sign up to be nazis and wear the swastika. The Gov at the time required them to sign up for 12 years so they called them 12 pointers. They had no idea of Hitler when they joined. Most fought for their families and their honor and their love of country just like our boys.
It is sad, but the Germans haven't learned much from their history. They did not learn to fight evil, they simply learned that fighting is evil.
The soldier is a tool like a shovel or a hammer. He is not the evil doer, it is the policy makers, the ones that decide for what he fights and bleeds, they decide if his cause is nobel or evil. The nature of a military isn't to go against its ruling class but rather to execute their agenda, whatever that may be.

You have to differentiate and look at people on a case by case basis.

You have to differentiate and look at people on a case by case basis.
The only exception are the Einsatzgruppen of the SS (truly intended to only do bad things) and many within the inner political cicrcle of Hitler: Himmler, Eichman, Heydrich, Göring etc. But for the rest of the German military it's a case by case.

However veterans on both sides will tell you that the Eastern front was hell on earth and remains the bloodiest Theater of war both for civilians and soldiers till this day.
