It is Bob Kulick & despite being a good player seems like an ASS. Seems to be pissed that he got passed over in favour of Ace. They both answered the ad for a guitarist with flash.
The drum part is totally consistent w/ Criss' style and ability. The tempo is like on the song "She", where the drums go into a 16th note pattern on the ride. Here, the 16th's go on the hi-hat instead. Very basic, and effective drumming, like Criss' style. Wheras on Unmasked and Dynasty(ex: "Hard Times") especially if you pay attention to the drum-fills, it's blatantly obvious that it's not Peter. The chops involved are totally inconsistent with anything he's played before.
The only diff I hear in this version of this kikk fukking ass song.....is that Ace sounds as loud as he should be!!! KISS ME IN THE MORNIN" N" WALK AWAY!!! This song fukkin rokks!
Bob Kulick is such a self righteous dick who never has anything good to say about Ace & still holds a grudge that he wasn't picked to be in KISS over Ace. That being said, he played the shit out of those studio tracks.
@mrblackwell467 I don't think Bob held a grudge about not being chosen after Ace as he was offered but refused. Bob has always maintained that his brother Bruce was meant to be in Kiss and he's upset that it took Gene and Paul so long to figure out what in his mind was the obvious choice after Ace, Bruce. I agree! Vinnie was amazing but ultimately not a good fit. St. John, Mark who? Then, after four years, Bruce who, in retrospect, was the right choice afterall. This is why Bob is upset.
@lariatfx" St. John, Mark " dont do that man st john put in a fantastic performance on animalize.that illness struck him down on top of his game is cruel enough with out you robbing him of his achievement .
anaman3000, I stand corrected. I just re-read the liner notes from the KISS Alive II remaster. It does say there that Peter Criss is on four of the tracks. I do recall hearing Gene say at one time that Peter was not there.
@mystro69 where did you here that? after the remastered versions and boxset came out the dime was finally dropped on who played what, Gene even stated it was peter and the only one not in attendance albeit rocket ride for these sessions was ace further more Anton Fig in interviews claims he never even met any of the rest of the band albeit ace again until Dynasty was being recorded when he did take Pete's place. Idk where you heard this disturbing info but I assure u respectfully its false
This is NOT a demo!!!! It's just another mix with some of the same tracks!!! Obviously the lead guitar is "sprinkeled" a bit more on this version. Toned down on the finished version.
@randomcentershow247 As much as I am an Ace fan this isn't him. It is Bruce Kulick's older brother Bob. He is on all the studio tracks on the 4th side of Alive II with the exception of Ace's tune "Rocket Ride"
This is cool, however, it's not an official "Demo" version. This is basically the same cut that's on the studio side of the KA2 release with different guitars (lead and rhythm, and EQ), and a vocal "punch-in" at 3:50 by Gene. Also, the "cut" at around 3:28 can be audibly heard in this version. Still, cool. Obviously, something that has been in Kiss' possession -- where did you get it? ;)
gene said he was handing vinnie the keys to the kingdom, but in reality ( even with vinniee's awsome talents) he wanted vinnie to be just an employee. fuck em and leave em......

this is what got critics pizzed off at Kiss in the 70's. this song and songs like Ladies Room sound like unfinished demo's, yet were put onto albums anyway.
@stevedrums Thats what I'm talkin about. It would be so cool!!!!!!!!! Give some of the regulars a rest. They have alot of great songs that have never been played live. This is definetly one of them.......
@bassmonkey1962 That's funny, I did too. I remember when it came out. It was some of the most heavy Kiss there is. I was kinda shocked when I found it was Bob Kulick and POSSIBLY Rick Derringer except on Rocket Ride as Ace was and still is my favorite Kiss member. It still kicks though!
@randomcentershow247 Sorry to burst your bubble here, but that's not Ace on guitar. It's actually Bob Kulick, Bruce Kulick's older brother. Ace wouldn't come in to do the studio work so they needed a hired gun to finish side 4 of KISS ALIVE II. Yeah Ace did "Rocket Ride", but that's the only one on side 4 he appears on. All the other lead work is Bob Kulick.
I can't figure out which is worse, your knowledge of 'Kiss facts' or your poorly worded retorts. You will never be the official king of Kiss knowledge... for that is me, and I am him. I've gotta run, it's time for me to poop on your mom's face. Peace.

Tisk tisk tisk. There is no need for that kind of language, you fat piece of shit. While you were brushing up on your 'Kiss Facts' I was getting a decent blow job from your mom. She could suck the chrome off a car bumper, I swear to god. Still, Peter isn't drumming.
@MrSkulleyes dynasty? wow, as i recall dyn was simple enough.. even these alive 2 songs.. did peter do the rest of these? what about any other kiss recordings?
these are just the bob solo takes then they got the right one for the album...cut edit then you have what wehave heard...this is one of the best kiss songs ever!!they duplicated this sound with creatures but never the same after that...well the sin album had bad ass riffs and drums on it..domino!!!help me out with the title of that album?
good point, though it's too bad they released it as is and didn't bother to finish it up, cuz it may have sounded terrific!! as it is, not so terrific!!

I always thought this was a great tune, that did not get much attention, i wish they would of played it live. But i guess Ace could not repeat Bob's Kulick's playing on all those little solo's,,ha ha
You are all crazy, the non-makeup era of KISS was just as important as the original band. They cranked out some excellent tunes post makeup, and the stage shows were just as big and exciting!! I saw every tour from Lick it Up to Rock the Nation in 04 and I saw every single lineup that KISS had. One more thing, the Elder is actually a great album, music wise. Now that I'm older I can listen to it for the music and not for whats cool and the music is great. Eric Carr #1. RIP we miss you.
i love ace but bob ripped it on this track..this is what went on the album(as far as the drums bass and vocals) but i bet gene and paul told bob to ease it up a bit on the fills.its just one of the many takes bob did on this song.thanks for posting!!!
Bob Kulick on guitar,Peter Criss on drums,Paul Stanley on backing vocals and of course Gene on bass and vocals. Then came the dreaded three album era of Dynasty,Unmasked and the ever interesting,Music from the Elder.
I wasn't aware of Pete playing drums here. I always thought it was a session drummer. Hey i'd take those three dreaded albums over what they release afterwards (with the exception of Creatures).
Well I obviously wasn't there when those songs were recorded but from all I know & read,Peter played on all theALIVE II tracks & it wasn't until the disco, pop album Dynasty that Anton Fig filled in on drums, minus Peter's track dirty livin'. Creatures was a great a disc no doubt, but I also think lick it up was a pretty rockin disc as well. I'm not saying alot of the songs from unmasked, dynasty & the elder weren't good, they just weren't hard rockin KISS albums. Alot of fluff & not enough crunch.
I still think this is Bob Kublick on guitar, along with whatever different drummer that they had for the track.
It kind of sounds like Ace, but the technique si to "technical", kind of like the way that Tommy Thayer immitates him....it's too perfect.
The drummer does not sound like Peter which lends me to believe that this is a different take of the same song during the same session, with Paul, Gene, Bob, and some other dude on drums, most likely Anton Fig.
Does anyone hear "The Seeker" riff from The Who? I've listened to both for years and just noticed the similarity in the opening riff. What a question for Gene if anyone sees him.
Excellent song and an awesome outtake. Gene, Pter and Gene played on this song with Rick Derringer siting in for Ace. I have the "Box Set" and it says this. You can hear Peter in the backing vocals.
A guy I met at Tower records years ago named Ruben had these
rare Alive II alternate takes and other tunes like Gene doing "Burning up with fever" with Ace on guitar and it killed the solo album version. He never made me a copy. There's actually a 3rd version of this song that had Bob Kulick shredding like crazy.
Those Alive II Demos that have been floating around out there aren't really demos, just different mixes with different instumental takes or differnt vocal takes...the basic tracks are really the same, but they get labeled "demos" because the bootlegging masses don't know what else to call them :) They're really "alternate takes" if anything, I suppose...
To set the record straight. Rick Derringer never played on Alive II, and he has admitted as much. Rick Derringer DID play lead guitar on Exciter on Creatures of The Night.
I'm a hardcore Kiss fan. The truth is they are great rock musicians. Come on, Detroit Rock City, Black Diamond, Strutter, Love Gun, I Want You. There music has always been great and groundbreaking. One thing for sure, Paul Stanley is the greatest frontman and vocalist is Rock and Roll. Remember Kiss fans, The Starchild even had the lead role in Phantom of the Opera. That's an amazing musical accomplishment for any rock and roll artists.
Bruce was on this because Ace had pulled a disappearing act. As I said on another post, cracks in KISS' foundation began to appear around this time. Also, there was a magazine that came out that claimed KISS had died in a van crash and burned up. Their ashes were taken down a river and poured into it. The mag also said this song was playing on the boat and someone remarked that that song described them completely. Who thought that up, I wonder? Rubbish.
It is Bob Kulick & despite being a good player seems like an ASS. Seems to be pissed that he got passed over in favour of Ace. They both answered the ad for a guitarist with flash.

Now that I'm older I can listen to it for the music and not for whats cool and the music is great. Eric Carr #1. RIP we miss you.

hey smart guy, without the original lineup and 70s popularity they would have never even been signed to a record label.get therapy

Lick it Up pop? That's the heaviest KISS record, PERIOD! You're probably confusing it with Crazy Nights or Hot in the Shade. Those albums are crap.

i love ace but bob ripped it on this track..this is what went on the album(as far as the drums bass and vocals) but i bet gene and paul told bob to ease it up a bit on the fills.its just one of the many takes bob did on this song.thanks for posting!!!
letiziaytito 3 years ago
Bob Kulick on guitar,Peter Criss on drums,Paul Stanley on backing vocals and of course Gene on bass and vocals. Then came the dreaded three album era of Dynasty,Unmasked and the ever interesting,Music from the Elder.
KISSFAN1970 3 years ago
I wasn't aware of Pete playing drums here. I always thought it was a session drummer. Hey i'd take those three dreaded albums over what they release afterwards (with the exception of Creatures).
Papatorrejano 3 years ago
Well I obviously wasn't there when those songs were recorded but from all I know & read,Peter played on all theALIVE II tracks & it wasn't until the disco, pop album Dynasty that Anton Fig filled in on drums, minus Peter's track dirty livin'. Creatures was a great a disc no doubt, but I also think lick it up was a pretty rockin disc as well. I'm not saying alot of the songs from unmasked, dynasty & the elder weren't good, they just weren't hard rockin KISS albums. Alot of fluff & not enough crunch.
KISSFAN1970 3 years ago
Yeah i know what you mean. They don't really represent the band at its core.

someone said Anton should be The Shark
he said how kiss was so original in 82...
he liked it alot...Bob would be
Ming the Mercingless??? The Asian warrior???

Paul, Gene, Bob, Anton fig would be a real band!!!

What a question for Gene if anyone sees him.
bradaddee 3 years ago
Excellent song and an awesome outtake. Gene, Pter and Gene played on this song with Rick Derringer siting in for Ace. I have the "Box Set" and it says this. You can hear Peter in the backing vocals.
exualmet 3 years ago
It's Bob Kulick on lead guitar. Not Derringer.

Is the person who posted this named Ruben??
A guy I met at Tower records years ago named Ruben had these
rare Alive II alternate takes and other tunes like Gene doing "Burning up with fever" with Ace on guitar and it killed the solo album version. He never made me a copy. There's actually a 3rd version of this song that had Bob Kulick shredding like crazy.
See if that one gets put up here soon.
darthinfurnus 3 years ago 2
Those Alive II Demos that have been floating around out there aren't really demos, just different mixes with different instumental takes or differnt vocal takes...the basic tracks are really the same, but they get labeled "demos" because the bootlegging masses don't know what else to call them :) They're really "alternate takes" if anything, I suppose...

Not Bruce kulick-but bob kulick---derringer played solo on exciter which was on Lick it up
warlockking83 3 years ago

Kiss rocks!!!!

Rubbish.

Then the best tone you've heard is Bob Kulick and that is a fact jack!!I mean Randy.

I wished the band did this song during the reunion tour.
The original line-up doing the classics.
Anyways, it is a good thing that KISS are still together in one way or another.
But, it's nothing like the 1970's.
