i think that Bach is romantic, because also with a rigid structure ( a fugue ) and a rigid instrument ( the organ ) he is the only one who can make me feel emotions. ( words of a pianist)
Everything about this video is good. Excellent organist, smallish organ with a big heart, reasonable acoustics (understood that this is not a cathedral!) and commendable recording quality. I'd just love to hear you playing at, say, Roskillde Dom or any of the big Dutch or German organs. I know! Come to New Zealand and play the newly restored and magnificent Klais organ in the Auckland Town Hall for us. You've obviously got the skills - you'd love it. And so would we. Cheers.
Everyone plays staccato these days which lets you cheat on the pedal technique (You don't go toe slides on 2 white keys wihout turning the ankle to keep a legato)(as well as the manual slides) but not a bad performance.
Anthony Newman performs it better on the harpsichord but this is a respectable organ performance. I wish he would incorporate more dynamics considering he has helper lady to pull the stops for him.
I have never heard this piece sound so perfectly beautiful. Perfect tempo. Slight rhythmic nuances are just right. The manual dexterity is phenomenal.
Here we listen to different things in the understanding and meaning we listen to reason and emotion, both are sailing very deep here and see the genius of Bach in the introduction comes the meaning of the concepts of human mystery that we have heard born in confusion and often people called Bach of blackout in the decoration in he's music but Bach is reflected in A sense of deep sense of meaning inherent to all humanity.. hear Bach music and after that say your judge about him but no so fast
Just out of interest... and i'm sure we've had this debate already but i thought we decided that you get much better pedal articulation using toes only!?
This is very true but you have much better control of the attack and release of the pedal itself when playing with toes only. (I should add that it's not just that pedals are short, it's that the sharps were so high that you wouldn't have been able to shift from sharp to natural without exceptionally high heels!)
The poor girl turning the pages looks frightened to death! I hope he doesn't shout at her if she turns over two pages at once or something! I once played this in public and accidentally played an A natural instead of an A flat so it became a fugue in C Major. OOPS! Anyway, he plays it very well.
You would be right, technically - had I played the whole fugue with A natural instead of A flat (and no B naturals of course.) But in fact I just played the first few notes - C.G.G.G.G.A...F.D.F.B natural and followed on with A-flat.G.F.E flat etc. So what I played was not a dorian but the Second Mode of Limited Transposition and the fugue was now by Messiaen rather than Bach. ;) Haha.
Bach played in his most original form. This is how it wou;d of sounded on the organs of the baroque era not the mighty younger ones. Both ways sound as beautiful though. All I can say is Bravo Bach
I love the organ!!! but this is so difficult! I can't undersand how sb can learn to play that!I mean, how know they what they have to do with their feet!?
Me too, I love the organ !! I'm learning it for 2 years (and piano for 8 years) and I can tell you that when you're sitting and when you must play with your feet, it needs a lot of concentration but after a few months, it seems not so difficult !!
Those aren't female shoes. They are just male shoes with a flat top. It's hard to tell because of the lighting. Female organ shoes have less of a top, and a strap to hold them on.
I simply love your choice of stops. It has a great tone to it. I daresay that those opening few notes have the best overall sound I have ever heard from any introduction.
and go to the Oberwerke. Makes a nice contrast, relief to the ears, and allows build up of next section. Are you, Bach2, referring to the video not matching audio? I like to study others' manual and pedal technique and want video/audio accurate. Don't stop recording until echo dies away!!!! NEXT: Record in STEREO! Many camcorders are now stereo. Makes such glorius difference in organ. Wonderful, Aare-Paul. Thank you!
Hey now, one must give credit where it is due. The fact that he can play it, AND (hopefully) add his own interpretation to the music is impressive. He probably was born a composer and just stuck with the organ.... lol...... only.
Some nice things about his performance, but still too legato. The sound doesn't come across all that well—so hard to record organo plenum. Is the organ naturally jangly? Just a little more reverb would have been good, either through mike placement or electronically added.

Bravissimo,
ho qualche idea diversa circa il fraseggio,
ma sono opinioni personali che non tolgono nulla alla bravura dell'organista.
Bravo!

....scusate,
ma sono composizioni che richiedono ad alta voce strumenti mastodontici....

perche' avere Bach senza i suoi srumenti?
esecuzione splendida!

I agree. For perfection one must play legato.
Good points on the pedal techniques as well.

Organ music gives improbable experiences, but how it sees one another how organist plays, then it seems, that he has three hands and two legs.

Paul, excellent Bach playing!
For a smaller instrument, it has guts.
I think the pedal articulation is just right.
A detached pedal can be very annoying.

In Bach's time pedals were so short, you could only play them with your toes. So it would be the authentic way to play like that, I guess.

alwa3dalsadek 4 years ago
because you play the pedals (normally) with a high heel shoe (a bit higher than male shoes)
this doesn't mean its a female shoe, you should expand your vision.

it is so well, you play bach in a very nice mode, compliments...only you should play it on a bigger organ!

Not that easy finding a bigger organ.
What matters more is finding a bigger, more live, room. Helmut Walcha plays this best.

Excellent spirited performance of a difficult work.
Great video especially showing pedals.
Annoyed at U-tube that sound and video are not in perfect sync. Middle section pedal is too robust.
Save that for later. Slightly slow when concluding one section before starting next. Listen to Helmut Walcha.

What does it matter as long as it sounds fantastic?

and go to the Oberwerke. Makes a nice contrast, relief to the ears, and allows build up of next section. Are you, Bach2, referring to the video not matching audio?
