@3231brianw I'm inclined to agree. I joined 14 July 1986, Cunningham 29. Passed out 19 September, after 3 weeks summer leave, bigging it up to the girls at home in my uniform! But I remember the beastings.... Press-ups because your jokes weren't funny enough, kit flying out of the window, and sleeping on the deck beside my bed, with all my kit laid out on it for muster. Then many moons later, returning there as a chief, to find that part one training had become all pink and fluffy!
HMS Raliegh hated it with a vengence, I remember the gay guy who touched up big jock well, remember the commotion in the middle of the night downstairs, we were the Walker 15's. Cant believe someone talking about it on here its only a couple of days ago i was telling another Matlow down the pub about that incident. We were the idiots who ran all the way back from Pier Cellars
A good video. I joined in 1988 - Drake 12's Ha! Ha! then after six years I was back at the Seamanship school - one of the best shorebased drafts in the UK. I remember old shovelface when I was barrack guard at HMS Drake in 1990 we led a charmed life with him as he could'nt stand the Royal artillery lads living there at the time after one of their officers tipped KFC all over his boots while signing the after midnight log, I never laughed so much. Excellent days.
Top vid mate, memories ....really bad ones actually. Hated every minute I was at Raleigh both basic training or worse the bloody Leadership Training school had a overflow training base there (1986) what a feckin nightmare that was... that horrible big black chief was tosser.....breaks off, sobbing. Even when I go back now I still expect to hear shovelface shouting at us!!
I Joined in July 1984 Oliver 27 passed out on August 10 and I don't remember that gay assault course at all.It must have been put in after I left. Thanks for the vid though it brought back many memories of all the pointless things we did in training before heading off to join the real navy.I remember shovel face and his daily rant "PART OF YOUR TRAINIING IS TO LEARN HOW TO STAND STILL!!!......SO STAND STILL!!!!" Tosser. Still, I'd do it all again especially the rig runs to the jubilee pub lol
I joined in July 87 and the only thing different was the music - Wasnotwas and Rick Astley. I can't believe how dated it looks, but if I was still in I would be on 2OE.
Certainly brings back memories. Now live in the States and looking at recent videos, not much has changed. Also spent a few years in the USNR - better kit, but preferred the RN.
I was there twice...July 1984...as a WEM...failed at Collingwood....back summer of 1985 to pass out again as a Radar Op...Happy days...Fxxkin Pxxsed most of the next 8 years....
do not think you will necesarily be based on a ship if you join now. THere's a big chance you will join in with ground troops in afghanistan. THe entire mod is a skint company. I wouldn't bother and its not a good career path anymore and the living conditions are very poor and cramped. Buy the time you have done ur 15 years service all the money you will have earned the government will screw you on the tax and inflation. YOu cannot win with them
What a load of old rubbish! If you join the RN you follow your own career path. If you join as a stoker you will be on a ship etc! You can pretty much choose where you go. As for the tax, everybody who works pays tax. When you get promoted your pay goes up nicely. The MOD is not and never will be skint. It is a good career if you want to work hard and play hard. I did 22 years and I have a nice little pension to supplement my wages, you sound like you got kicked out!
@PERSYFILTH it has changed a lot between this video and when you joined up. I joined in 1986 and you got beasted day and night. We only got about 4 - 5 hours sleep a night and all our kit got thrown out the window every day. The PT is also a bit easier now, it is a gradual progression, back then you were beasted from day one.
@3231brianw i dont doubt that at all mate, when i was there it was easy as fuck, a mockery in fact of what it should be like. i was meerly saying that the place looks ecactly the same thats all
@3231brianw I had my matress thrown out of the third floor window (with all my kit on it for my PO's kit muster) because my cover wasnt folded correctly LOL now that was character building
Disagree philobyrne, he just believed passionately in his job. I knew him a bit later when he was at HMD Daedalus and he was a nice chap. Of course, if you stepped out of line he let you know about it.
yes he was Gunnery officer. I remember running down hill on a path to the parade ground to join the guys and saw Shovel face walking up the path toward me. Being new i was contemplating what the heck to do, salute when running? eyes right? stop and do both? I ended up trying to do everything at once and with the metal studs in my boots i skided past him with arms and legs all over the place, I got a right bollocking. If you end up going to hell i bet he will be in the welcoming party.
Memories, memories, memories. Krapkarma, i Joined in May 83, Was in Pellow 22's instructor po Hawes. Paddy, Buzzy, Janner, Ash, Mac, don't be shy, get in touch if you can. Yes, Shovelface was a dick, always shouting "STAND STILL THAT MAN" even telling where you were on the parade ground, sad.
Drake 13 class, March 1986, christ i would be getting ready to retire. Went on to Sultan, left after trade training, seems like yesterday. If you were in at the same time get in touch.....
I was in Drake 13 March 1986. Left, time served, last march. I just remember PO Birkett throwing all our kit out of the window everyday. I went back as an instructor around 1998 and used a lot of his tricks!!! Happy days.
lol wow i remember doing the cadet version of havok (damage control) that was awsome!! and the assault course, although we didnt get to to the full assault course :(, but that was about 5-6 years ago when i was in sea cadets and i went on a general training course to HMS raleigh it was an awsome week!!
I was at Raleigh in 1989 , Nelson division and was in the guard when we passed out. My father in early 80's was a C.P.O instructor. I have many memories seeing the parades and daily life on the base. As we lived in Torpoint we were always using the swimming pool. Thanks for video
NO WAY! hey i joined on th 14th june 84, this brought back some memories i can tell ya. i left in 89/90. i had a good time, and some shit ones too but hey that life, but all in all it was great fun, really exciting. i was on the broadsword, then to hms rooke in gibraltar, that was a great draft, i was a chef, i also served on the amazon for few weeks and charybdis (old ships now) :o GOOD LUCK TO ANYONE JOINING MAKE THE MOST OF IT. j!m
I feel like a really old bugger wiv all you youngs sprogs talking about joining up in 85 and 92 etc. 1972 feels soooooo bloody long ago now but those nozzers walkin out of step look just the same to me.....some things never change eh?
Excellent, I joined in September 1995 and apart from the uniform on drill, hasn't changed much, still serving and loving every minute of it. I was in Cunningham also during Raleigh. Don't try to beat the PTI's at Pier Cellars, I beat one crossing the last bridge (rope) and paid for it haha, was all good tho. To anyone joining, stick it out and hold your head high on pass out day cos you worked hard for it!!!! God bless ya all. Paddy
This is 2 years before I joined but it's exactly as I remember it. The sound track adds that extra edge of depression. Isn't that PO Lally with the beard?
Shovel face was a complete legend. Did everything by the drill book, including window shopping according to one dit. He was at Daedalus in the early 90's when I was on tiffs course. Dead now I understand.
He had the audacity to pull an Admiral up at Collingwood cos his salute was'nt by the book. He was at Drake at the end of 89 and gave me a bollocking cos I was giving him a nasty look when handing him a cup of tea.
He was banned from the Wardroom and was not allowed to serve on ships because he was so unpopular with officers and ratings alike.
when i go back im gonna be a right hard ass class leader trust me. im gonna be workin out for the next 2 years. i done it b4. but this time wen i pass everything itll be a lot easier. lol
that manouver @ 2:00 is very dangerous and people have been killed at sea in real life doing it due to the ship going of course. Its no fun dangling like a worm on a hook
brings back good memorys. i was a drake 23. jus left taking my pvr n i already goin back lol. do raleigh agen. good fun. cant wait. hope im class leader this time
Great stuff, matey. Really brought it all back. I was there 81. Drake division. PO(GI) Hamilton for the parade ground. Proper old-school hard bar-steward, but a good guy. Colour Sergeant Brown was the resident RM psycho.
Never since had an Oggie like the ones you used to get off some civvy catering outfit who used to set up on board in the evenings.
Then there was the occasional glimpse of stocking from a wren PO and a 16 year old boy's brain would fry
I was there in 1984 basic training and 1987 for leadership. brought back some horrid memorys of running aroud the parade ground with an SLR above my head being screamed at by a GI. Still I dont think some of the youngsters today would put up with that. Yours Aye
Awesome video... I was Nelson 42 back in 1987 then went to HMS Mercury...loved my time at Raleigh, PO Farley in the east drill shed, The Naffi, and pier sellers was good training too. Thanks for posting this video
Many thanks for posting this, its brought back some fantastic memories. I joined on 25 March 1985 so was there at the time, walker 13 Cheers again, great time in my life.

im 16 years old and thinking about joing the royal navy as a seamanship. if i go my will have a 2 month training course at the hms raleigh! i got crappy grades at school and dont really have much of a future to be honest. does anything its bad/good idea? please give me your comments!
my bro is 19 and was fed up with civi life due to lack of qualifications and has done exactly that, seaman spec aswell.
it cant realy be a bad thing and would make you highly employable if you wanted to leave that is, but there was a big waiting list for seaman spec, think he waited nearly a year before he started raleigh.

Bloody marvelous, brings back many memories. Benbow 06's 1984. This was back when the mob was fun, the duck walks to the fire school hurt though. Why Fergal Sharkey though???????? Is the Harbour Lights still in Torpoint? Remember being so drunk one night was wading out to try and catch the ferry. Oh happy days.
Good answer, when I was there Madonna was on all the time in the Agromat, which is about the only place a sprog could go back then. Arrgghhh Traff Galley and those bloody placcy green mugs, takes you back doesn't it :-))))

Superb memories. I was a Benbow 29 in 1985. The Automat favorites were Opus,Life is Life & Money for Nothing.
I vividly remember the Rig Runs into Tor-Point. A bunch of 16 year old Jolly Jack Tars; How funny was that?

my bro is 19 and was fed up with civi life due to lack of qualifications and has done exactly that, seaman spec aswell.
it cant realy be a bad thing and would make you highly employable if you wanted to leave that is, but there was a big waiting list for seaman spec, think he waited nearly a year before he started raleigh.
