Your lathe is under powered, I showed this to my husband. He has been turning for 28 yrs. I was asking him why your lathe kept stopping. I love black walnut. My first piece from him was a BW bowl and vase.
i'd say just get a new lathe and that would fix the whole problem. and you really need to stop going so fast and slow down. and prolly sharpen the tools to. because as far as i see that bowl looks like crap
You seem to have very sharp tools and a pretty good lathe arrangement but, the key to turning a bowl is to work from the outside to the middle this drasticly reduces catches and the like. Hope it and helps!
the power is too low and the speed too high a different pulley arrangement could help , a very sharp tool is key , the wood looks very interlocked . thus fellow seems to be making it harder than it need be .
My geography atlas indicates the forests between texas and te appalachian mountains are rich with walnut . I have heard of farmed walnut in california and mature lumber from oregon . europe also has native walnut trees .hope this helps .
the wood is very attractive so long as the colour suits and is good to finish and i think durable .
yes that lathe is not quite right. looks like you've got a nice set of bearings and a shaft there, but the bet/headstock arrangement is not working. Heres a cheap alternative, fill a steel drum with concrete and dyna bolt it to the top!

hey, his lathe it obiously home made. if it gets the job done, and you enjoy using it, keep it.

Working on a lathe dosen't require that much skill. Try using a Foredom SR to make wooden knives and spoons!
