  • Are you going to make a video about a xP Farm like u told in this video? Would be great, cause mine are highly inefficient ...

  • Please make new videos! Maybe dispensers? Or gravity?

  • Use minecarts to get the monsters in the killing zone. Maybe put dispensers shooting arrows at them. I dont know it that gives you xp.

  • Whens the next VIDD??????!!!!!!!!!!

  • Whens the next VIDD??????!!!!!!!!!!

  • Great stuff. You've got urself a new subscriber.

  • you should put 1 grass block down way far away and let it spread =3

  • Whats the axe mod called?

  • @zluhcss Axe mod? Dunno what that is. I list all the mods and tools used for the video in the video description.

  • @TaviRider i think he is talking about world edit :3 btw love your vids

  • @TaviRider It's a feature of Singleplayer Commands.

  • @zluhcss world edit

  • @zluhcss type //wand to get it with the mod

  • @zluhcss I think you mean WorldEdit, it is actually a Bukkit plugin for SMP, but it is implemented in SiglePlayerCommands to use in SP :)

  • @zluhcss its part off world edit. it also come with single player commandes if u download it

  • I also want to know, so I can better track/plan when I throw ender pearls.

  • TAVI! YOU'RE BACK!<3

  • I was thinking of dispensers, which could be thrown to power something else. This is just a quick example, but it could be used when creating special staircases and cool things with sand and gravel. I've just been recently interested in how the gravity of players, objects and mobs work in mine craft.

  • Hey, just noticed you posted again, welcome back from 4 months :D

  • Can't wait for the followup!

  • Lovely. thanks :)

  • By gravity, I mean the rate at which blocks fall, the arch of an arrow, or of any projectile (ie: dispensers) and the speed which they travel.

  • @RyanLokan While there's clearly a lot of things you can learn about Minecraft gravity, I don't see any practical applications. My science videos are intended to learn about fundamental behaviors so that you can do something useful (or optimal). What practical applications do you see for understanding Minecraft gravity?

  • Hey Tavi.

I love your videos man, thank you for doing this for us!

But really, I could sum up most of your videos up in a minute.

It's just a suggestion, but it would be great if you could make your videos more... compact and efficient.

  • @NLhardcorebobNL I'm sure these videos could be much shorter. Just stating the conclusions would be very short summaries. But if I do a video that just shows the summary, nobody believes it. My science videos are about the process, as well as the conclusion.

  • @NLhardcorebobNL Another part is that sometimes my conclusions are wrong or too inaccurate, as happened a couple times with minecarts. Showing my methods helped get the critical feedback necessary to refine the experiments.

  • I want to see a video explaining the gravity; or lack thereof in mine craft.

  • Let me see if I already know what's being presented here:

Spawn range = 8x8x3 centered around the spawner block's lower left corner.

Inhibition range = 16x16x8 centered around the lower left corner. 6 or more of the spawned monster in the inhibition range will disable the spawner.

Activation range = Sphere with radius 16 centered around the lower left corner. Spawner will only activate with a player within this range.

  • @codewarrior0 A few minor corrections: I don't think the inhibition range or activation range are centered on a corner, I think they're centered on the center of the spawner. And 6 of the correct monster disables the moment of spawning, but the cycle of the mini figure spinning up continues. This is different from how lighting suppresses a spawner.

  • @TaviRider You are correct! Only the spawn range is centered on a corner. The inhibition range is 17x17x9 around the block center, and the activation range is a sphere around the block center.

  • Here's a question I'm trying to answer for myself.

What is the largest number of spawners with non-intersecting spawn ranges that can be within the player's activation range?

  • YO tavi where been at :P?

  • Hey tavi where have you been !

  • I started a new world and I started building a house in the mountain and found a mob spawner inside:D

  • Thanks TaviRider, keep uploading science videos :D:D

Can i suggest you Dispensers Science ? :D

  • @MyDooMJrK23 There's a few interesting properties to dispensers, but for the most part they don't matter. On the other hand, spawners are very important to grinders.

  • @TaviRider So what will be you're next video ? Do you have an idea alright ? :)

  • @MyDooMJrK23 More about spawners, actually.

  • Very happy to see another video from you, and on a very good subject.

  • Hey, where were you at bro?

  • He´s back ladieeeeees

  • Excellent as always. I'm glad to see you're ok. It's nice to see a new video from you.

  • Do you have brigthness set to highest when you film? If not it might help to see better at the dark parts of the video.

  • lets see:

    liked: check

    favourited: check

    subbed: check

    commented: check

    shared: check

    I believe that's it

  • @themaster1366 I like it, especially the subbing and sharing! Thank you! If you're that much of a fan, there's one more thing you could do for me: Click the Reddit link and upvote. It's a bit too late for this video, but for future videos, that really helps spread the word.

  • @TaviRider i'm defenetly a fan, it is just amazing how you can make redstone clear. about that reddit thing, ehh, what is it?

but i keep doing the same on all your future videos :P

  • @themaster1366 minecraft[dot]reddit[dot]com has heaps of great Minecraft stuff. Users posts links, and other users vote them up or down. There's a comment system that has a similar voting system, and that (usually) keeps the best comments at the very top. I use it to spread the word about my videos and projects. All free, of course. If you're interested particularly in redstone you'll also enjoy redstone[dot]reddit[dot]com.

  • @TaviRider ok thx for the info. i'm defenetly going to take a look at the site.

  • if you let the zombies fall about 20 blocks under the spawner you can have lots of zombies ready to be killed if you stay afk for about an hour like this /watch?v=QSLQg59JRXs&

  • @Duckstarrr I took a look at it. It's sloppy and requires potions. I'll be presenting something a bit better.

  • Very cool experiments sir!

  • TaviRider, are you still working on the redstone server? Everyone is wondering if you're still alive.

  • @GIVI4Ever Yeah. There were some problems with hosting. Now I'm hoping Shrogg will continue the setup of the server. Sorry for being out of touch.

  • how is it you spawn creature spawner?

  • @thedeathtrap995 With the TooManyItems and Single Player Commands mods.

  • Great tut's Subbed.

  • at 4:30 let us know if you or someone else finds out if quadrants matter

  • i would imagine this gets really complicated with multiple spawners.

  • interestingly, I believe a regular spider spawner will "turn off" when there are 6 or more cave spiders in the area.

  • @40Headquarters Ohhh, that's worth checking out. I'll try that myself.

  • @40Headquarters I just tested this, and you're correct! If you have 6 cave spiders within the detection range of a regular spider spawner, it won't spawn more spiders. HOWEVER, the opposite is not true! If you have 6 regular spiders within the detection range of a cave spider spawner, it will still happily spawn more cave spiders!

    Ugh. I hate cave spiders.

  • @TaviRider Thanks for confirming that, I didn't know about the opposite. Also I was really impressed with your thoroughness and use of the hollow sphere command. I've wanted to make spheres around two nearby cave spiders spawners to see where to stand, and it was really cool seeing what it would kind of look like. As always, looking forward to more of your vids. Cheers!

  • @TaviRider Probably has to do with Java's instanceof. It probably tries something like this for Cave Spider spawners:

    int nearmobcount = 0;

    for(EntityCreature e:list)

    { if (e instanceof CaveSpider) { nearmobcount++; }

    }

for Spiders, it detects both Spiders and CaveSpiders (since CaveSpiders extend Spiders, probably). for CaveSpiders however, it detects only CaveSpiders and not normal Spiders.

  • @gmfreaky Makes perfect sense to me.

  • @TaviRider And is that ironical? :P

  • @TaviRider In case you didn't understand it, it is like "All cavespiders are spiders, but not all spiders are cavespiders"

  • @TaviRider I suppose this indicates that the Cave Spider class extends the Spider class. When looking for a creature of type [Spider] a cave spider will do, since it has all the properties of a normal spider. However, when looking for the more specialised [Cave Spider] class, the normal Spider won't do.

I wonder if the Zombie Pigman is an extension of the zombie.. or perhaps the pig. Pretty easy to test, since it would then inhibit spawning of pigs or zombies if 6 of them are in the vicinity.

  • @Pholhis i'm pretty sure the zombie pigman is either its own mob, or an extension of the zombie.

  • these rules are true for all spawners?

  • @suudsuz I only tested zombie and skeleton spawners. I expect the spawn area for spider spawners would have to be slightly larger, and one block shorter for cave spider spawners, but that's just a guess based on how it works now. I've played extensively with a blaze spawner in a hardcore single player world and I think it works the same, but I haven't tested it directly.

  • @TaviRider cool thanks

    subbed

  • Wait, when you mentioned how it might be to do with the location of the spawner to be off-centre to the spawning area, the spawning area is 8x8, could that mean that the spawning area is calculated by chunks in quarters? So when you place a spawner, it chooses the quarter of the chunk it's in. Maybe.

  • @crossbow711 I don't think so. I saw that zombies don't spawn at exact positions within blocks. Sometimes they're near a corner, sometimes an edge, sometimes nearly dead center. And this is also what the wiki says, based upon decompiling the game code.

  • Would the maximum amount of mobs be different if there were two dungeons connected or would it still be six?

  • @SecKsTaSy still would be six.

  • @SecKsTaSy I expect that each dungeon would check its own region for six monsters. If those regions overlap and there's six monsters in the overlapping region, neither spawner would produce any more monsters. I don't know this for a fact, but it would be very easy to test. Oh, and the two spawners would have to be the same type (spawning the same monster type).

  • how does it chose whether it spawns 1/2/3/4 zombies at the same time?

  • @darkiboy2 The wiki article on spawners says it's random, and watching all the spawns that I saw while testing verifies that somewhat, but that's not a rigorous test. It wouldn't be difficult to test... just set up a spawner, count how many spawn each time, and then use /killall to clear the area. Anyone feel like doing some followup science? :)

  • he's back!!!

  • actually yes it does ssoz

  • I don't think so - hope it helps :)

  • Is the spawning rate affected by how close you are to the spawner (as in, is the spawner less likely to spawn if you are 15 blocks away or if you are standing on it)?

  • @ent474 I don't think so. As far as I can tell, with each poof either 1-4 monsters spawn, or none do.

  • you're back!

  • Long time no see! ;D

  • Do you know whether or not it'd be possible to pass in the Entity ID of experience orbs into MCEdit to make an experience spawner? That would be fun to see :D If so, what ID would I put in? Thanks, and that was some pretty nice tests you did there. Good job.

  • @Iseedeadkittens666 I don't know whether you can abuse spawners like that. Considering spawners have some mob-specific rules, I don't expect that it would work, but I've never tried. According to the Data Values page on the wiki, it's ID 2.

  • @TaviRider Ah, cool, thanks. You're right, though, doesn't seem to work. Too bad, was hoping that'd work.

  • @Iseedeadkittens666 According to the wiki article about the save file format, XP orbs have a couple interesting properties: their lifetime, and how much experience they give. You could edit an XP orb to make it live a very long time and have it give a very large amount of XP.

  • Well good to see you making video's again. Now maybe i will be able to make a good grinder.

  • There is one thing you didn't test that I am curious about. Do mobs need a floor to spawn? After watching some of Vechs maps I see spawning on walls, but in your test it was only on the floor.

  • @Masonkirs The normal random spawning of monsters needs a floor. But spawners don't need that. In fact, you can put a spawner in midair and as long as the space is dark enough, monsters will appear in the air and fall down.

  • @TaviRider That's what I thought but I wasn't entirely sure. Thank you!

  • @Masonkirs You're welcome. It occurs to me that you can see this demonstrated in the video. When I do the test of horizontal spawning area you can see a zombie spawn in the air and then fall down to a pillar.

  • @TaviRider I've been experimenting with using sand as a TNT Cannon tester, do you mind if I send you a map I did on it so you can look at it more?

  • Cool

  • great! I love the science vids. Just one question, i made a "monster fish house", where a player stands on a platform somewhere up in the sky, inside a big cubic structure, with the floor made of spawners. The challenge is to fish up as many mobs as possible. But if i make the platform 16 blocks from the ground, the mobs won't spawn (or atleast extremely slowly), the magic number in my case seems to be around 12 blocks high.

Any ideas, why? 16high is ideal, so i want to know if that is possible

  • @tekssbb Good question, and I can answer it now because of this research. If you're exactly 16 blocks above the spawner floor, you'll probably only be within range of a single spawner, the one that's directly beneath you. To be within range of the most spawners, the player would have to stand on top of the spawners.

Try imagining a 16 radius sphere around each spawner. Each spawner will only work if the player is inside that spawner's sphere.

  • @TaviRider briljant, should have thought of that myself =)

i think i'll make hollow sphere around the 4 corner spawners and where they intersect i'll make my platform, thank

  • Welcome back, I can't wait for your uploads to start popping up in my sub box again!!!

  • Thanks for all you have done - you help me better understand my only game :)

  • Splash potion of healing?

  • @ehhblinkin Yeah. Healing damages skeletons and zombies, 'cuz they're undead. You'll see that trick again in my next video.

  • I see you got zombie spawners pretty much outin the middle of nowhere..

May I ask how you got them? Are they made with a command?

  • @michelfijn I used the mods TooManyItems and Single Player Commands together. I used TooManyItems to put a spawner in my inventory (you can see it in the rightmost slot). When you place one of those it starts out as a pig spawner (though I never saw it spawn a pig). Then I pointed at the spawner and used the Single Player Commands command "/spawner Zombie" to turn it into a zombie spawner. Note that it's case-sensitive.

  • @TaviRider the pig spawner need grass to spawn pigs.

  • @jontis96 Ohhh, thanks jontis96.

  • @TaviRider Ooh, thank you! Now I can give myself some spawners and spawn the living crap out of the map. >:3

And I subbed. I've really learned things from your videos..

Just when you think you know it all.. Oh well :D

  • @michelfijn the singleplayer command "/spawner Zombie" will turn the block you are looking at into a zombie spawner (also works for other spawners, mind the capital letter.

  • welcome back tavirider

  • Instead of making cups just type in /freeze. It stops mobs from moving.

  • @pielover267 I didn't find out about that command until after I built the cups. I also needed the six of them to be visible, and when I do the clone command and then nudge them, they fly apart...and off the platform, so I needed the walls.

  • Thanks for this, Tavi!

  • glad to have you back! also, just to let you know, the "h" in the "hsphere"-command stands for hollow, not horizontal. (:

  • @wcbgn Did I actually say horizontal? Ugh... I knew it meant hollow too.

  • @wcbgn Thanks for the tip, I added an annotation correcting myself.

  • Sweet Jesus thats good...

  • I just found a zombie spawner in my world a few days ago and i didnt know how to deal with, your video comes at the right time, thank you :-)

  • @JeanAlphonseJaune I've been playing a hardcore single player game and realized that there are only two things keeping me from attacking The End: Ender Pearls, and XP for enchanting items. I have everything else I could want. So I started researching XP grinders, and I realized there's a lot of science to do.

  • @TaviRider By the way did you know that the End is an island ? I mean, if you get away from it, you're in total blank... then put some blocks 25m from you and an unnumerable amount of endermen will appear. The rest is up to you ^_^

  • This is a great video. Well explained.

  • New video ! probably dreaming

  • WB Tavi! Can't wait for new vids!

  • what commands do you use

  • @warhead1122 I use Single Player Commands, and a lot of different commands from that... timeschedule, drops, instantkill, weather, damage, infiniteitems, set/goto/rem, and several of the worldedit commands.

  • or just go kill some enderdragon

  • where in the world have you been!!!!!!!

  • At last! :D

  • I missed you! Well, this video was great, thanks for all the research you do!

  • glowstone world's are lagi

  • You're back :D!!!

  • Can someone plz make a pdf or something with this info?

BTW awesome to have you back :)

  • what i think is best is to make a small platform around the spawner, off which zombies will fal a perfect distance so that they have only one heart left, then u some sort of waterfall system for them to float up to the redzone, were u can kill them easily

  • @Rurushi629 My next video will be a presentation of a grinder. Getting the fall from the platform is problematic, for a reason you'll see in that video.

  • Etho said the same thing about the spawning space on the X and Z axes. I noticed that the texture of cobblestone is a good way to determine where the mobs will spawn. The L shape acts as kind of an arrow telling you which direction to offset the spawner in the space.

  • @teel115 It just needs a little testing to make sure. The wiki article about spawners says something about lower value coordinates, but it's unclear whether that's absolute value or relative value. Specifically, does it consider -10 to be less than -11 or greater? It would be easy to test, but relatively unimportant because the space is already almost entirely hollowed out by the dungeon.

  • The 'off center' part makes a lot of sense when you realize that your spawn area as a whole is an 8x8 square--the short sides have the same directional bias as some of the other oddly directional events in the game, doesn't it?

  • @VulpisFoxfire Some center points are at the center of a block, some are at the corner. For instance, the 16 meter radius sphere is linear distance from the center of the spawner, but the spawn area is centered on one corner of it. It all comes down to what math the programmer wrote when he coded the functionality.

  • @TaviRider So if I'm understanding, the sphere is actually either 31 or 33 blocks in diameter (16-block distance, depending on whether the spawner itself is included or excluded)? Makes sense--as you say, it's different math being a straight distance calculation, while the spawn volume is somethng else since that's apparently *not* a sphere.

  • 1:05 Gentleman zombie. xD

  • @cxgamer Hey cxgamer. :) I don't believe in demonizing one's enemies (even when they're demons).

  • yay! :)

  • Nice to see you posting again.

  • Woah, after eons waiting hopelessly, you're finally back on track! Was Minecon fun anyways? (I know that's probably a long time alrd...) saw you with sethbling and a few others there!

  • @Gunbardo MineCon was a blast! Being on the panel with SethBling, kiershar and Guy3 was amazing, and the audience there was perfect. The afterparty was really memorable too. It was all a lot of fun. Did you see me there in person, or from SethBling's video?

  • i love ypur 'cup's lol

  • did anyone notice there's no 13:37

  • @GamerLad98 The video isn't even that long, ofcourse there isn't.

  • @lsrwLuke lol its a joke (1337)

  • @GamerLad98 It's not funny.

  • TAVI'S BACK BABY! :D

  • Subbed,great video

  • good to have you back m8!

  • Welcome back man! This is smart! I though about minecarts, let the in it somehow..

    Anyways how have you been?

  • nice, I luckily built my skeleton XP farm such that they collect in the sweet spot without knowing it. Great video!

  • Can you do something about the lagg in your video? Maybe just record in 720P instead of 1080P or use the optivine mod.

  • @zezioen You can select your resolution directly... I have every setting available. Does that not help?

  • @TaviRider Nope in all the settings it´s laggy and I don´t think its my MacBook Pro with a i7 Quad core at 2,4 Ghz and an AMD Readon HD 5770 GPU.

  • @zezioen Sorry, I don't know what could be causing it. If you're lagging at 360p, I doubt there's anything I can do to fix it.

As a shot in the dark, are you running Firefox with a bunch of tabs open?

  • @TaviRider Yes I am running Firefox but with just two tabs (Twitter and Youtube) but the lag only appeared when you were looking at the glowstone floor, other then that it was ok. Maybe your computer can't handle a full floor of glowstone lighting? Try recording a sample video in the current 1080P and one in 720P and check the difference. (for me that boosts my FPS from 26-30 to 60 while recording for a different channel)

  • OMG ! TaviRider YOU ARE BACK !

  • Why were you been all that time? :o

  • @BlackAddictz Doing lots of things... bought a house and moved into it, went to MineCon, got sick, got well, and did a bunch of work on a video that I decided not to publish 'cuz it didn't turn out well at all.

  • @TaviRider Okay, I'm happy that you are back!

  • You should do another world tour!

  • Tavi, you are my new MC hero, good day to you.

  • OMG thanks for coming back! :D

  • omg you're back!

  • omfg!!! HE IS BACK!!!

  • Perfect

  • SETHBLING SENT ME.
