It's so touching, the way mother hyena just patiently stands / sits there and lets her cub nuzzle her.
Random observation: the mother's ears have no scars I can see. I think that'd make her fairly high ranking.
I wonder how a person with a knee-jerk dislike of hyenas would react to watching this—if that person wasn't told the animal is a hyena (betcha a good number of hyena haters have only "seen" a hyena in _Lion King_...)
I love hyenas...and their spots. :-) Their cubs are absolutely the most wonderful animal babies. Those who think they are ugly, are definitely influenced by various stereotypes.
that guy in the video is a dumbass. Hyenas are NOT related to dogs. Hell, they're more related to cats. They have their OWN family!!! Dang people piss me off
Dude in the vid is very wrong. Hyenas are technically giant cats. Their order is Carnivora and the suborder is Feliformia, same as lions and tigers, etc.
They're so sweet. But also terrifying if you're alone in the bush at night!! I love AND fear them. We always did, in the African bush where I grew up as an Mzungu Mswahili..
Ah she seems such a patient mother, she is beautiful and her cub is just adorable. Not a dog though, though I wouldn't like them any less if they were.
Referring to the Lion King movie giving hyenas a bad rep : funnily enough, it backfired in the case of many people, since i myself thought that Shenzi was adorable and Simba was just a spoiled brat as a cub ; so yeah, take that in your chin and weep, Lion King... ^^
I think that is the cutest thing I've ever seen. Okay, now I'm in love with hyenas :D I've always liked them, really. But the laugh.... the laugh just kills me every time :) And when they cry, it's so sad :( It sounds so heart-wrenching!!
i find it strange how people can hate these animals, their so beautiful. have you noticed movies like TLK didn't even dare show a hyena with a baby? i used to like that movie bt now i just plain hate it. these animals don't deserve this bad reputation, just as the lion does not deserve the title "king of beasts" no animal deserves that title, all animals should be treated with the same amount of respect, no more no less.
@Idonthinkso7331 Whats worse about their reputation is that lions scavenge more than hyenas. Hyenas get most of their food from hunting. They are just smart enough to also scavenge as well.
Movies like the Lion King give beautiful animals like the hyena a bad name. All these ugly stereotypes that go around about them make my blood boil. Just like wolves. I don't understand how people can hate them without even knowing any facts...
@VivaMessico What about when lions team up on everything else and steal their food? All animals will steal food given the opportunity. Do you hate all animals?
Unlike lions, most hyenas don't kill their prey before they begin to eat it. The prey is alive for an excruciating amount of time while being eaten alive by a pack of hyenas. At least lions make sure it's dead before eating. That's the reason i dont really like hyenas, not because of some bullshit disney movie.
@PHILLYHEAT215 Well... Praying Mantises eat their preys alive too... And us Humans eat oysters while they're still alive, and do we bother to know whether they're dead or not before gulping them down? Not really... Nature doesn't shock me.
@PHILLYHEAT215 Watch more nature videos. Lions don't make sure their prey is dead before eating any more than all hyenas eat prey alive. Both are group-hunting super predators whose only concern about their prey is getting it in their belly -- how long it stays alive makes no difference to them. It's quite ridiculous to think lions are trying to be more merciful or noble with their food.
@Ridney I do watch alot of wild life videos (unfortunately lol) and yes most lions go for the throat of the prey and hold on until the prey is dead, not because the lion is "merciful" but to prevent being struck and injured by the flailing prey. Hyenas tend to not give a shit. Both are spectacular animals though.
& what's wrong with watching lots of wildlife videos? :) i've watched a lot as well since i was a kid, & i think you're right. I've seen countless videos where lions tend to wait til an antelope stops moving its legs, while hyenas will go ahead & have at its prey while you can clearly see it moving!
@PHILLYHEAT215 is wrong. Lion OFTEN wait for their prey to die, but not always. Three things that will make a lion eat live prey are:
1. It doesn't fight back—see vid of lions eating a baby elephant alive;
2. It would be dangerous to try to apply a kill bite—see vids of lions eating warthogs alive; getting in for a bite would mean risking death from the hog's tusks;
3. It's too big to kill with a neck bite—numerous vids of lions eating buffalo, hippo alive
...and the way lions eat live prey make the hyenas look merciful because at least hyenas do it FAST. When hyena take down an animal, it's dead in minutes, guaranteed. When lions eat something alive, it can take HOURS before death.
Check out the article in the online version of Smithsonian Magazine, "The Truth About Lions." In a nutshell: male lions are vicious killers who would have driven *themselves* extinct if female lions didn't create the pride system.
@ScisMacGillicutty Hours? are you kidding me, how smal of a bites do they take? I really can't believe that it takes an animal hours to die while a whole pride is munching on him. Yes it's cruel but that's nature you know, it's not like they have common sense like us. (although...)
(It's also the 4th video in my playlist "Bad Kitty! Lions Eat Prey Alive")
You're right in that nature shouldn't be judged by our standards, but some folks insist on calling hyenas cruel for eating prey alive, and are in deep denial that lions will eat prey alive under some conditions.
Maybe I should just say of hyenas way of killing, "Hey, it's nature. Deal with it."
@ScisMacGillicutty I kinda get the folks that are in denial about lions eating their prey alive. They have this image in their head about this animal, and "eating an other animal alive" does not fit well with this image. I had the same when I saw a video of a stallion killing a foal (it was born lame) and another video of male dolphins trying to force a female in having sex. I was really shocked by that, but yeah that's life I guess. I try to deal with it. :)
aww the cutest little thing ever they are so sweet
my friend laughed at me because hyenas are one of my favourite animals (next to wolves and dolphins) but i can't think why i mean LOOK AT THEM!! squeee
Dude, that's not the point of that video, anyway. Of course, a wild hyena can be a dangerous predator, and getting close to her would be suicidal (especially considering she has a baby). We can find beauty in nature without necessarily making a connection with our own concepts.
The young hyena is called a PUP and not a cub... just like any other canine species
TheRaginTiger 1 month ago
@TheRaginTiger A hyena is genetically closer to a civet (from the feline family) than to canines. And a young hyena is called a cub not a pup.

Well actually.
The polar bear is the "king of the beasts"
And hyenas have gotten their reputation because they are scavengers. Scavengers always get a bad rep.
+ the fact that they eat their pray ALIVE , slowly.
AND THE GUY WAS WRONG, they are more related to the cat family than the dog family.
They are most related to meercats etc:
