1 thing about them is they r very predatory don't even get 1 if u can't supply it w live food at all times they need 2 hunt I feed mine 100 guppies, mollies or platys a week and iv kept him in a 90gal tank alone and now he's a year old and 18in
@TheJake7689 This is not true, large pellets are far more nutritional than live feeders. I feed mine live food once in a blue moon as a treat. But mine eat a variety of things from pellets, freeze dried red shrimp, TetraCichlid Crisps, frozen mysis and brine shrimp and frozen blood worms. Considering a 90 gallon tank is 18"s deep, your fish wouldn't be able to turn around in it. Also, the largest a male gets in captivity is usually 16"s max. I call BS.
@TheJake7689 do they develop hole in the head? i have a 8 inch managuenese with just a shovelnose and i feed him pellets for the first year ( I raised him with pellets since an he was 1 inch and minnows every month or so) now he doesnt eat pellets and has gotten very skinny so do you think i should try minnows then pellets again?
@msd1412 All cichlids can develop HITH if water conditions are not kept pristine (ammonia and nitrite = 0, nitrate < 20, change at least 50 water weekly).
@TheJake7689 Certain live foods are OK. Goldfish and rosie reds should NEVER be used as feeders as they produce thiaminase, which will shorten the life of your fish.
@215TheFlash It depends.. When they are really small, like 1 inch, they usually grow pretty quick... Like an inch every 3-4 weeks. Once they reach about 6 inches the growth rate tends to slow down a little. It depends on what u r feeding, how often u r feeding, and how often u r changing your water.
do you not have any tankmates with him cuz you want a solo tank or other u think jags cant be with anything else? I got a large jag in a 125 with a big oscar and they get along great, ganna add a demsey and GT also.
@nyinfamous2k2 Your jag must be a female, because a male will only tolerate females of the same species unless you have a gigantic tank (600+ gallons). Male jags are very territorial toward all but female jags.
That's actually a pretty small jag. Wait 'til he's full grown (about 27"). You'll find out how big that tank isn't.

@GaToRxxx420 your right about the pellets cuz when i used to feed live feeders my fish would usually get a disease
bruizer1100 11 months ago
@TheJake7689 in my experience you don't need it. but it makes them grow alot faster if you feed live food
