Why is it so hard to make a straight up animated adaptation of Mario?

Mario/Luigi/the Princess/Whoever else they decide to drag along try and keep Bowser and his minions from conquering the Mushroom Kingdom.

Seems like a good enough basic plot for a 22 minute cartoon.

No need for idiotic pop culture fantasy worlds, frequent trips to "real world" locations, or wisecracking cavemen (WHO WEREN'T EVEN IN THE GAME!! Dinosaur World's main inhabitants were... surprise... DINOSAURS!!).
