Katchen is the greatest pianist to ever record....only Howrowitz was greater. And even that's questionable. Katchen even makes other giants sound like students. His tone, technique, singing lines, rubatos played in all the right places. What a tragedy he died so young.
I have discovered this myself after hearing myself play something really dreadful because I played to physically too fast. Knowing this now has made my playin a bit easier for me because I can playing things slow enough to be within my grasp, and stil the audience will percieve them as fast. ;-).
His performance is great, but I agree after hearing it through to be more technique than music. This is very typical of the performers of today and recent past.
I have always wanted to play this but have never been able to. However, I take a great deal of comfort in the fact that Schubert himself threw up his hands in despair at his own inability to play the piece, and declared 'THE DEVIL MAY PLAY IT!'
wow, I love this! People's comments are awesome too! I feel part of a very knowledgeable select few! Ahhhhh... this is amazing! I'm seeing Paul Lewis tonight - get me! =D
There is a story about Brahms: a musician said to him after the premier of a piece: 'but you conducted that twice as fast as at the dress rehearsal'. 'Yes,' said Brahms, 'but you should have felt my heart pounding'. This is great playing.
Thank You for posting .Beatiful and fiery plying.I totally love experiencing Katchen after Lang Langs fantastic rendering.Schuberts greatness transcends

@cucciolosaR
Hai ragione! Un bacio:-*
