There is nothing CGI can do that wasn't done in Return of the Jedi. CGI is a useful, effective, and cheep tool for making great effects in half the time, but I would really love to see a return of model effects.
@darthzach Agree 100% Model effects are something real, something tangible. They take up real space. As good as CGI is, you can't replicate that. You always know when you see CGI, its basically watching a video game.
Does anyone have videos of siskel and ebert reviewing the Special Edition of the Star Wars trilogy, and ebert and roeper's review of the prequel trilogy?
I know this sounds horrible, but I'm glad Siskel died before Phantom Menace was released. He didn't have to endure the horror of seeing SW being raped.
Lay off CGI. Just because it can be such a staggering effect that you're so distracted that you can't care about characters, doesn't make it a bad tool. The first people to watch movies with practical effects were just as mystified by them back in the day.
My problem with CGI isn't that it is "mystifying" but quite the contrary. It is rarely well used. By that I mean you usually immidiately see when something is computer generated. That breaks the illusion and the atmosphere. Practical effects are real and you can see that. That said, some directors (like Burton and Del Toro) use CG to great effects so that it blends perfectly with the rest of the sets and it doesn't stick out. It certainly adds new possibilities.
and star wars has far from finshed i mean its being re realized agian in 3d and guess what everyone who saw it before in 1977 and 1997 in theathers will more then likely see all 6 movies agian.
You know, watching classic movies like this get reviewed is sort of bittersweet. On the one hand, it reminds me of all the completely organic and effortless magic movies used to have. Natural-looking cinematography and warm analog sound. Very humane worlds that everyone could relate to.
On the other hand, it also reminds me how plastic and phony our "entertainment" is today. As I say, bittersweet.
Kind of a shame listening to all this stuff about Star Wars being a brand for quality entertainment now...

This show was filmed before I was born. It's weird watching it and knowing that I wasn't even alive when this was broadcast.

I only liked Episode IV. And even then, I only thought it was pretty good. No Star Wars movie has been spectacular in my opinion.

Okay, I kind of like the Ewoks.
There I said it.

Really, who needs CGI in movies. Live action effects are way better adn they do not distract from the plot. Thumbs up for yes, thumbs down for no.

@Fapsamup CGI only ruins a movie if it's used too much. CGI is not an enemy. It's just another story telling tool just like sound and color.

Cool - I had forgotten about that great simple original Cheetos bag. Now they got that fucking stupid cheesy tiger.

Oh only if george lucas had listend to siskel's advice on quality control. we would have had a much better prequels in the series
b1rocky 2 years ago
I think Lucas had too much "quality" control in the prequels. The best SW movies had the least to do with Lucas.

I don't think they're as bad as everyone says... But then, I wasn't raised on the OT...
