  • Hey, I upgraded to Lion OSX though app store.

I don't have an installation disk for Lion.

I just got a new SSD for my Mid 2010 macbook pro.

How can i do a fresh install or any install on that new SSD?

  • Does anyone know if it is necessary to disable Virtual Memory in OSX Lion with a SSD still, or has the SSD lifespan gotten to the point where one can just rely on it?

  • You said in the video that you had not enabled Trim. I'm hoping to install my Crucial M4 on an older MBP today, and was wondering if you know the best way to go about this?

  • @PogueSquadron I will just leave it. The GC in the controller is pretty good. Just make sure you update to the latest firmware.

  • Thanks for the vid. I'm thinking of trying it myself. Question: The Mac Site said that you have to be running snow leopard before you upgrade to Lion. The SSD doesn't have anything on it right? What is Mac talking about?

  • @dukethepancake You need SL to *upgrade* to Lion, meaning you can't upgrade a Leopard install straight to Lion.

You can do a clean install of Lion on any blank disk.

  • Great video, but I have a question. I know I'd be better off installing a fresh copy of Lion on a new SSD, but will I really notice a huge difference if I was to put a new SSD in but restore from an old back up? Apologies if my question has already been asked!

  • Hi Mate, if you have Lion already downloaded from app store whats the best way to reboot after installing the SSD? I bought a 250GB Crucial SSD. I have the original discs that came with the Macbook Pro 15" 2011 i7 2.0 & have a time capsule to back it up. I presume I back up as normal, install the SSD & then once I turn it on, will it recognize that i already have Lion or will i need to re-install it? Thanks a mill

  • @eire845 If you want to save time, just do the restore from TM backup. If you want to squeeze every bit of performance, i would do a fresh install.

  • I am planning to buy an SSD but i heard that 2010 macbook pro's support only SATA 2 ssd's... on the crucial site i saw that 6gbps i.e SATA 3 is compatible with my 2010 macbook pro core i7!!! So please tell me what speed is ur SSD?? 6 GBPS or 3 GBPS???

  • @420rockerprerak The Crucial M4 is backward compatible. I have the 2010 Macbook Pro as well it works fine. Just it won't operate at full speed as the 3Gbps bandwidth limitation.

  • How would I copy my data from my old drive over to a new SSD?

  • @jacobh1995 on a PC, use Norton Ghost. On a mac, i did a complete time machine backup then restore to the new drive.

  • @SuperGadgetGuy

Why do get better bater life with a ssd? It is light in the overall weight?

  • @elgransr It's just like a flash memory. Doesn't require a constantly spinning motor to access the data.

  • I remember that my leopard boot up in 20 seconds in a normal hdd.

I hate Lion mission control it is just shit. I have been using mac since 97 or so but I do not like lion. I

  • @elgransr I still keep my Application folder on the dock. I don't like Mission Control either. It's a computer not an ipad and it takes one extra step to launch my app. most of the time i just use spotlight search then launch. Much faster. It does make sense if apple is planning on a computer with a touch screen.

  • @SuperGadgetGuy Would you recommend this SSD after using it for a while? Do I have to do Lion clean install or can I restore the system from Time Machine partition?

  • @xaero212 You can do either one. I choose clean install because i don't want anything from the old OS to slow it down. Also my old system with all the apps and docs are about 350GB which is too large for the SSD. The SSD still runs great. Most apps start with one bounce. Photoshop is the only one that needs several bounce to start but performance is amazing over all.

  • Hi, did you install bootcamp on your SSD ?

And did you notice any slow down or beachball since you installed it with the new firmware?

  • @TheKorlone no boot camp, don't want to partition the already small drive any smaller. Never used the 002 firmware, upgraded to 009 before i did the OS install. No Beachballing at all and this is with TRIM disabled as well.

  • You should enable trim its easy to do. Do it manually.

  • @na1du Ya I downloaded the Trim Enabled but didn't enable it as I read different results online with Mac OS Lion. Some said the Garbage Collector with the 009 firmware is good enough that they got the beach ball with the Trim Enabled. I can always enable it later and so far the performance is AMAZING.

  • Great video to show us the firmware upgrade process :)

  • @majnyn Thanks. It was easier than I thought but can't believe I had to waste a CD to do it.

  • @SuperGadgetGuy Yeah I know what you mean, I had to go to Walmart to purchase one, I'm just waiting for my MBP to arrive tmrw so I can install this SSD right away!

  • Boot time after the Crucial upgrade is on par with my 2011 MacBook Air. 13-15 seconds. Superb!

  • what are you spraing?

  • @TheShaikh1991 just compressed air to clean out the air vent.

  • @SuperGadgetGuy ah ok

  • Hope it's Apple-air because otherwise I think you can say goodbye to your warranty xD

  • Don't you lose your warranty when you open the macbook?

  • @TheShaikh1991 Don't think so. besides that's the 2010 model the included 1 year apple care already expired.

  • otherwise good vid

  • @TheShaikh1991 thanks. It would be better if i used an iPhone 5. ;)

  • really had to show your iPhone 4 to let us know you had one...

    Everyone has one these days

  • @TheShaikh1991 It's the best way for me to show the stop watch
