Get the Knack. My favorite Beatles album of all time. Yeah, kids it was THAT good. But of course good things don't last. This should have been the band of the 80's. Instead we got U2.
lets face it. greatness is opinion, but if you are really honest (and have ANY idea how hard it is to write any song, let alone one that resonates with people) these guys and many others desserve a nod. the fact that people still talk about bands, long after they have toured and radio play has faded HAS to say SOMETHING.
These guys were very vgood. Like it or not. Comparing bands seems silly. Like whatever you like and try to find something you like in everything. Life gets a little rosier.
Their comeback album " Serious Fun" was a great album too ,; its a shame the record company folded before the album was able to get any real promotion.
@dytakeda Nice try, Paisan. However, "Can't Explain" was written, according to Townsend, to satisfy producers' demands that they sound more like the Kinks.
Not really. I like that album a lot, but that wasn't even Zep's best. The most important record of '79 was London Calling, which in it's own way, like Get The Knack returned rock to it's roots while still steeped in the modern sound of the day.
No way. After "Fool In the Rain," the rest of "In Through the Out Door" only got progressively worse. "Get the Knack" and "London Calling" were far better and far more significant albums.
"Get the Knack" is ingrained into many of us as the definitive summer of '79 album. I still have my original copy. A girl I liked at the time loved the album, so I had to buy it. Rolling Stone called it the album that brought down disco.
This cover version of "The Hardway" came off of the Knack's second album.
Great songs. Great band. Great memories. R.I.P. Doug Fieger.
SunnBurn - "Rolling Stone called it the album that brought down disco." Yep, you got that right. I actually remember that. Damn, disco sucked! THE RAMONES & The Knack were the BEST thing that came outta the 70's. They saved us from committing suicide at the thought of having to sit through the "disco duck" era. 8:47 pm Feb. 17 2010
What a difference if you have or don't have the album. I never bought Get the Knack when it came out in '79. All I know as of 42 years old is My Sharona and Good Girls Don't. Then I hear a song like this and I hear a fast and upbeat rocker ala The Who - Can't Explain & The Clash - Clash City Rockers
Thats WONDER not WANDER... And The Knack actually had 3-4 top 40 hits and "My Sharona" was number #1 for like 15 weeks in 1979, and it was Billboards number #1 song of the year! Thats no easy feat for anyone, in any genre!
They looked like 4 upperclassmen plucked from the Alpha Epsilon Pi house at the University of Illinois...

Townsend wrote I can't explain to sound like The Kinks. You guys have it backwards, The Kinks came first.

beginning riff sounds way to much like "i can't explain"

it was an excellent rock album but for my money the best album of 1979 was Led Zeppelin's In Through The Out Door... Hands down. No contest.
108vasudeva 2 years ago
Get the Knack replaced In Through the Out Door at #1 on the charts. Zep's last #1, the end of an era and the beginning of another.
