I watched all 3 parts of this stunning video. All the musicians pour their hearts into the song. What gets me is the audience at the end. It's almost as if someone had to wake them up to let them know the song was over. I would have going wild by the end of this song.
I can't believe I'm saying this... but this song goes by WAY too fast. Especially when you start paying close attention to the individual quests for the four heroes. But still a fun ride, every time.
They only toured the US with that. VERY interesting story on where the pyramid is today, here -video.aol.com/video/aol-weird-news-and8212-utopia-found-todd-rundgrens-pyramid/3190057580
I have some live show from Utopia where they drag this out for well over 45 minutes...And you still want more, This is one of those "holy shot" moments in music when you can't understand why these guys are not worshiped for their musical genius, this must have been a bitch and a half to pull off live..
Saw him playing one of these guitars once - the flashing lights off it blew your mind along with the notes he was playing. The thing looked like it was made out of polished silver. TODD!!!!
In the real concert they produced a glass guitar (ice) and did smash it. The real show totally blows this (small budget tv re-production?) out of the water.
Anyone who has listened to the album would realise that this track was always going to be a real nightmare to perform live. To their credit, all the band put on great performances and pulled it off. There were huge chunks of improvised solos, which at times veered off and bore little similarity to the studio version......not always a bad thing though. This band was and still is, vastly underrated, particularly here in the UK.
@zeldamaster102 yeah!..great performance but i miss the smashing of the glass guitar! Maybe to wild for the germans... but god love em... w/o them we wouldnt have decent documentation of great acts like this... this and MUSICLADEN r awesome!
I could sit and listen to Mr. Rundgren play for hours. Hell, thanks to Youtube, I think I just might have. lol. Whether that is a good thing or bad thing, I'm not sure. All I know is that what I'm hearing is just amazing.
Todd is such a MASTER & GENIUS.Overlooked Ignored, and Misunderstood.

his guitar sneak's up on you until it hit's you "upside your head". i first spied on todd and utopia in 1973 at the arie crown theatre in chicago and his music has always helped me to try to be real.
Except for the 1st Utopia album, this is possibly the most intense guitarmanship I've ever seen him do.
This part 3 is the Todd Guitar Showcase. If Jimi gets youtube in Heaven, I believe he's smiling down on the first two minutes here. Then it's pure Todd. Todd realizes what he's got at 2:06. I think I can spot fake expressions and it ain't here. I think he was peaking and he knew it.
More Hendrixesque follows, such as a run at 3:54. Then signature Todd multiple returns to the themes. Mastery.
Saw this show in downtown Memphis in the spring of '77. It was in the same auditorium where the Memphis Symphony played. It was at capacity, meaning 3700. It remains the finest display of musical talent I've ever seen, and I've seen my fair shre over the course of 49 years. He played nothing but songs from RA that night.
I do understand that.....we are like that too. But when it is over, we really show our appreciation. I guess the fans are more restrained in Europe???
I'm thrilled to say I'm going to the very first EVER show of A Wizard A True Star "LIVE" in it's entirety in Akron, Ohio this September!!! It's going to be HISTORIC!!! I'm driving 8 hours to get there. I can't wait!!!!
because this song is a STORY... a fairytale in music and in Europe they are just plain crazy about this kind of thing, or were in the late-70's apparently. You just don't interrupt a storyteller I guess. I hope this answers the question.
Alright Todd, I'll take my Veleno ankh guitar back now, I think you've had it long enough. Pass me my eBow while you're at it. Don't you ever give back anything you borrow in a timely manner ?
thanx, the audio of what U got is better than mine, early 77 from the UK somewhere, i'd need ta look it up around here-do ya have "Hiroshima" from this tour lurking about anywhere? lemme know if ya post that!, thanx again again again
This was the first Todd / Utopia show I saw in 1978 and it was awesome. I saw Todd and Utopia 2 more times after this and one time I went to a record store autograph signing and actually met Todd and told him how much I liked his music, he was really nice and friendly. Thanks for posting these videos, they are really good.
So I watch the audience response at the end and I YELLED "THATZ ALL YOU GOT? UTOPIA JUST KICKED YER BUTTS AROUND THE WORLD AND YER SITTING AND POLITELY CLAPPING?" Unbelievable. You'd think the band just woke them up.
I never got to see this show when they came to Blighty to do it. My mate went and told me about the pyramid and the smashing of the glass guitar. Great to see this at last, even if it is 30 odd years too late!
I love the bit at the end when they all play their individual solo parts, together. I'd love to hear a version where they went all the way through them to the individual freakouts they ended up with!
I saw them in Binghamton years ago and they had this huge pyramid that Todd climbed as he was playing and then somersaulted off the top and was lowered to the ground. What a GREAT concert!!!!
Saw him in NYC at Radio City Music Hall One of the few rockers to ever play there. He had the pyramids set up on stage AWESOME SHOW !! One of the best rock guitarists of all time !
Wow, Todd/Utopia at it's height, risking, experimenting out the wazoo on whatever was broiling out of Todd's technicolor brain...awesome tunes, amazing times. Loved watching them play these concerts!
The backwards effect is not that device. He has his rig hooked up doing that. The magnet pick is some old device guys used around then, I forget what it is but it was featured in a Guitar Player issue from around 78. All the help I can give, sorry. Peace
You are referring to the E-bow which simulates a violin bow, but that is not what is producing the backwards effect where the note increases in volume after being played and then suddenly drops off, which is how it would sound if recorded on tape and then play the tape backward. The article in GP magazine refers to an envelope generator, but no particulars. If anybody has any details, let me know. Thanks.
Sorry about the arthritis. Just to be clear with everyone, I was inquiring about the white device on the stand, where Todd is turned facing the other way and adjusting controls, at the beginning of the clip- not the e-bow. Thanks.

Butt-head: Yeah. That must mean there's a chick.
Beavis: Or Todd Rundgren.
Butt-head: Who?
Beavis: Todd Rundgren.
Butt-head: Who the hell is he, Beavis?
Beavis: You don't know who Todd Rundgren is?
Butt-head: Uh, no. And you don't either.
Beavis: Um...oh yeah.
