I am using a film camera for a class. The canon AE1 Program. I took the lens off and moved the f lens and it while i was looking at the lens while spinning the f numbers it did not move...is this a problem?
It really is a great pity that you don't know anything about the subject that you are purporting to be tutoring people about. Your shot with the house in the background really achieved nothing. i would suggest going outside and photographing something close with a blurred background, and then decrease the aperture so that all is in focus. Unfortunately the longer you talk the deeper the hole you dig for yourself. Depth of Field is fun, experiment!!!!
Oops, haha well then I guess I'll re-post my reply here!
Yup, that sounds right, the bit about the focal length/distance, but how does the bit with the sensors work? I've never heard of that...sounds like another dx/fx lens crop factor myth to me... Care to elaborate?
While focal length and distance to subject do effect DOF, if you change both so that the subject is the same size, any difference in actual depth of field is nonexistant. Shooting a person who is 5m away at 100mm will yielf the same DOF as shooting them 20m away, at 400mm. The perspective flattening makes the DOF appear smaller.
You missed out sensor/format. Full frame DSLRs have shallower depth of field than crop bodies. Medium format is shallower again etc.

Hey Nate,
Could you please do a tutorial on the different metering modes and how they apply to photography. This is something I am a little confused about!
Thanks!

@bridgeoverwater627 Excellent. Thank you very much!!!

did you adjust the focus in any of those examples or was it left the same? i'm thinking playing with the focus alone will alter the dof?
philboy521 1 year ago
@philboy521 It won't increase or decrease the depth of field, what happens is it actually shifts it farther or closer to the camera.

Try to set your f stop to higher like 22 or more then everything is in focus. Dont forget to press the shutter halfway before pressing all the way.
Robinhood0328 2 years ago
Ah yes, but at f/22 you get something mean and nasty called diffraction ;)

Did you use a JVC Everio GZ HD7 to make this video? :)
