2 to 3 racers die every year in this competition.. they have to go over 70 mph so they dont get stuck in the sand or fall "stupidly". Today was the first day of the Rally Dakar 2012, and 1 competitor died already.

You forget about FATIGUE! Do you know anything about Dakar? They ride for hours a day EVERY DAY with only ONE rest day in the whole rally, which is 2-3 weeks long.

Some of that terrain is no place for two wheels. I'd take one look at that sand and say pack the bike, gimme my airline tickets, this 'ain't worth it. I'll be a quitter but when I'm sitting home having a BBQ outside instead of digging sand out of my mouth and eyes after crashing every quarter mile I don't think that would bother me much. I hate hate hate riding on sand!.

It was a Dakar 2010 or perhaps 2009 moment when a truck came up on car and the car had the pull to the side to let the truck pass. They had a in car camera showing the driver telling the trucker off. I think it was a french team in the car and they were riding one of the more Baja looking cars.

Anything to do with rally is supposed to be difficult... google 'rally raid' and it will show you how many other 'baja events' are currently out there...on earth. The old Dakar has no equal, and if the global security conditions does not change, THEN, the Dakar WILL never have an equal.

I'm from California, I know about Baja and I totally agree...DAKAR IS THE BEST! Starts on the European side in wintertime, through the sahara, and finishes in Dakar, Senegal in the African continent. Extreme conditions from day 1, nothing compares or comes close.
