I think this performance is below average. I've seems better voice and performance than this. Her voice doesn't suit this aria. Even though she hits the notes, she had trouble nailing them and her voice doesn't characterise of a mechanical doll!
I don't understand all of the complaints and criticisms. It sounded great to me. I'm not familiar with Edita Gruberove, but who cares what her hair looked like? I'm more interested in her voice. And I saw nothing unusual about the look on the conductor's face at 3:30 minutes. All I saw was him gesturing to her. I saw no look of shock or surprise. These critics here need to get a life. Could they do it any better?
Edita is a FINE coloratura, and clearly not at her best here. She was hitting at notes and not nailing them right on, very uncharacteristic of her. Her hair is a wreck too, but I still love her.
i actually am a huge gruberova fan but i do not like this performance. There is a video of her doing the actual opera on stage and it is a fabulous production. i wish someone could post it.
Heard her in Chicago, lucia 86 and the voice on top was so fantastic it rang like a bell, the scoop did not bother me in the house, power and very clear, Brava
whoa, Edita looks kind of cracked out here, someone should have told her that her hair just wasnt working. Anyway, musically speaking, her technique is very clean, as usual, but her again exhibits her habbit which i HATE of scooping up into big climactic high notes, as she does with the high Eb at the end. This is something she consistently does which gets on my nerves, however here i think its especially inappropriate since shes supposed to be a MECHANICAL doll
She often overuses the scoop... I don't think i have ever listened to a preformance of her without using it, and it often ruins the song for me at her over use of it.
thats what a scoop is, a portamento into a high note. She does it far more than is appropriate, expecially given the 'mechanical' (pun intended) nature of this role. shes such a capable soprano with great technique, i think its such a shame that her 'calling card' of sorts is such a distasteful touch, she does it a lot.
What is 'distasteful' to you is actually the Viennese style of singing. Some others enjoy the portamenti. It'd be a shame if everyone has to sing the same way.
I read that in a concert in Barcelona a few years ago Edita Gruberova got a standing ovation that lasted 21 minutes. No wonder if you once heard her in the finale of "Mein Herr Marquis" (Strauss Fledermaus)
It seems she got another one just as long a few months ago singing Lucretia Borgia at Liceu... at age 62! The woman is something miraculous. It's a shame we can't entice her into coming to sing in the USA more. :o)
As everybody knows, portamenti in french music should be done when they are written. In this particular moment, it could be done a piacere and not exactly going from one note to the other. "Blinding insight" for you, that don´t know what you´re saying.
"Everyone" excludes Natalie Dessay, Sumi Jo, Joan Sutherland, Elizabeth Parcells, Elizabeth Vidal, Laura Claycomb...do I need to go on? Basically every other coloratura who sings this aria without the portamenti. And I didn't insult Gruberova. Your comment was needlessly childish, and your next one elitist and pompous. Goodbye.
I don´t give the damn about all those you mentioned there. They are great singers, especially Sutherland, that if she was singing, all those could sing in the chorus. It wa sa stupid comment... period!
I agree with you. Too many people want to criticize how this aria is to be sung. Let the person with the stupid comment post her/his video for us to critic.
They seem to know everything sing so perfect I would love to see and hear them here. Im sure they don´t even get close to this great artists worse days.
My jaws drop to the ground and chatter... She sounds so at home above the stave it's amazing. Even better is how all the coloratura is incorporated to the song. Brava l'Unica!
wow...just wow.

yeah it is slow and makes it harder on the singer.

It wasn't her best. Her high notes seemed really thin. She's better than this. Maybe she was.........sick.......tired........not warmed up?

Why does the conductor make it so SLOW!! I'm amazed at Gruberova for keeping her breath under control through this!

That glide (or just sustained portamento?) during the "Olympia-a-a-a" runs might not have been stylistically appropriate, but it fits the role.
