Go-229 would have been effective considering the fact that there shooting past the B-29s at nearly 600mph. The gunners would not be able to hit that small of a target going that fast.
I doubt that anything flying so close to B 29s would escape unscathed, their radar guided defensive .50s were very effective when properly used. In post-war tests 'against' Brit jets with 20mm Hispano cannon the B 29s could bring accurate fire to bear first simply because the radar controlled gun-laying was so accurate.
@AlfredTupper The guns on the B-29 were remote manual sighting and operation, there was no radar control to them. They did use an advanced analog ballistics computer for sighting in on fast moving aircraft but no radar. Radar was installed in the tail in 1947 and the tail gunner removed.
@joshuago8 Yeah the discovery channel built a full sized, mock up....accurate in every detail , at leas as far as the material used, and such....it did not have engines and was not meant to be flown. They built it to test if it was truely a stealth aircraft, or not. According to the results they found that it was indeed quite stealthy, probably easily evading the primative radar of the time.
@joshuago8 Also I found this link /watch?v=JBnBSJ9bz3A supposedly showing a real one being flown and tested by the US military soon after the way. Its a very short clip, and I suppose it might even be a fake, done with computer animation, but it does appear genuine. I dont know the source or anything.
@493175001 0 The Military definition of "operational" means, effectively, released to active service. The Hortens never had any aircraft that saw active service, the HoIx line, and the Ho229 line were all prototypes, that was my point.
The description for the video is incorrect as the first flying wing was Jack Northrops 1929 prototype, the hortens flew their first manned glider 4 or 5 years later.
The Horten Ho IX V2 prototype powered by Jumo 004s first flew on Feb 2 1945, it crashed on the third flight after one of then engines caught fire and stopped.
yeah my mother tried, but she failed!! so shut the fuck up and stop spreading FUD, that plane was never operational. Heil Hitler!! Heil Heil rock and roll!!!!! hehe

The 229s' would be equally effective against B-29s' if there were P-51s' escorting ?

Wait, our definitions of being "operational" are somewhat different. It flew but the war ended before 229s could be mass produced.

Just a note, the Ho229 was a prototype, they were never operational, the production model would have been the Go229. Gotha never produced any.
