Erin was the best announcer on the ship. her timing was good, and easy MOR style was good. Being from Pittsburgh, Pa, the "Laser Sound" was good to hear again when Caroline went.
Non stop laser waves: the American overdrive charged the beats with a unique panache... And yes - modern commercial radio is almost as bad as waffly radio 1. Go for Smash Hits online stream for "non-stop, feel-good pop"...and imagine the hissy longwave genome!
Does anyone know where I Erin Kelly is now? I'm an old friend from Alabama where she's from and I've lost track ... I've been in France for years. If you have any idea how to contact her, tell her Jody wants to her from her at jodygjenkins@gmaill.com. Thanks
SOmeone has mentioned Caroline having OPTIMOD processing - certainly when I visited the ship when it was in Mistley it certainly had an optimod processor on it!! still have some great pics of the ship and alot of technical pics!
This brings back some great memories, I was about 17 & training to be a carpenter when it all started, we had Laser on all day, my mate who ran a local pirate station told me about it, so I got to listen from day one. Later on I got to meet some of the DJ's. Bloody good times!
I now live in Hampshire and remember listening to Laser 558 and it was great , The shite that now exists is radio two with Steve boring wright and his obliging cronies , And Coast which employs a piss take DJ in the smashy and nicey voice, Utter crap stn playing some obscure Fleetwood mac and Phill Collins crap of the eighties and Galaxy which is total bolox chat with retarded wanabees. f88K ME WHATS HAPPENING
Although i wasnt born yet when Laser went on air, but i really this radio station was cool, and too bad they went off air... Hope someday they will come back hehe.
You are probably right lonegroover, by the beebs ban it drew attention to the fact it was a controversial recording. Was it started by Mike Reid refusing to play it on his prog?
I remember Laser 558 very well in 1984, i switched from listening to Radio 1 to Laser 558 & loved it at the time especially the fact that there wasn't much chit chat between tracks, just record after record but soon got fed with the repeated monotonous playlist!!
great days! Everyone i knew had radios in cars trucks even tractors tuned into Laser558 It was a sad day when they were closed down. Like a lot of others,i felt i lost a lot of friends that day.
I cannot tell you how many hours of my life in the summer and autumn of '85 I spent listening to this station. Laser literally ruled the waves (and my life!).
I still have the postcard that Erin Kelly sent to me in response to my letter to her. It was a picture of the M.V. Communicator, and she circled her cabin!
Laser 558 may be gone from the airwaves, but never gone from my memories.
It was great fun Lee listening in the early hours of August 1985. Been listening to the clips when they were under seige in that month. I was 16 then and it was fantastic. Such great music.
But when I hear from this vid they *apparently didn't pay royalties I wonder what was going on.
On Friday and Saturday nights, when there was no school in the morning, I used to try and stay awake and listen to Charlie Wolf right through to closedown at 1:00am. Most times I'd fall asleep, but occasionally I'd manage it. And I still to this day remember how Laser signed off at night; Thank You For The Music by Abba.
Laser gave us what we wanted, it was as simple as that. Far, far, far superior to the likes of Radio 1 or Invicta FM!
@mw01908 I think most people would name the old Sea Wolf as their favourite DJ on Laser. (But I've a feeling, in my letter to Erin Kelly, I told her something like "you're the best DJ on the air"!! Well, I was only a kiddie really too!)

Was this station responsible for Relax being the great hit that it was, BBC banned Relax as I recall.

I agree, summer of '84 for me. Love to hear that Jeffrey Osborne track on the clip too. A real Laser tune.
This clip is fantastic, thanks for uplaoding it.
