@franksm2001 Yeah, a voice, that seems to come from the center of the earth. You should listen to his version of CORINNA, CORiNNA. One of the best singers I ever heard. There should be more great videos of him on YouTube.
I heard him in Dallas at Poor David's a couple of months before he died. He opened the show with an absolutely show stopping rendition of There Stands the Glass...what a talent! I'm so glad I got to hear him live.
@emmapeeldallas I have always wondered if he ever made it to Texas for any shows. I'm in the Houston area and can't remember him ever being here, but that's also something that could have easily gotten by me. It's very cool that you got to see him in Dallas.
quality i had the pleasure of seeing the man live in glasgow when the city was the european city of culture the cheapest gig ive been to and 1 of the best this man is a legend
I remember the 1st time I heard Ted Hawkins on the Andy Kershaw show (BBC Radio 1). It stopped me dead in my tracks. Such power and emotion in a voice is rare. A natural talent. A lot of respect should go out to Andy Kershaw too, who spent time getting Ted known in the UK. Ted's death was sad as he was just getting better and better musically. Thanks for a great upload.
@aaarrrggghhhh Great post. There's a collection of Ted Hawkins' music called The Kershaw Sessions: Live at the BBC that is what has to be a compilation of the very music you're referring to (I assume so, in any case). And you're absolutely right -- respect to Andy Kershaw for the role he played.
@varuscelli Thanks for the reply Varuscelli, that was kind. I might add that Ted's voice still has the ability to stop me in my tracks over 20 years after first hearing him. There is a biography of him on the allmusic dot com website, but it's a little limited. Andy Kershaw had some serious domestic problems in recent years and lost his job at the BBC as a result. Shame, as he was helpful to new musical talent of all kinds. Thanks
@bastus451 He loved to play in front of people so much, that he had an acrylic nail permanently fixed to his one hand to pick better, and wore that glove on the other. That way he wouldn’t get cut by pressing down hard on the strings. This allowed him to play for hours.
@Dragonking3787 Good to hear from you again, Dragonking3787. It's not me talking, but one of the people who narrated parts of the Amazing Grace video...I think maybe Michael Penn...or Michael Messer.
I was lucky enough to see Ted play in Norwich in (I think) 1986. He came on after Andy White had just bombed doing a poor man's Bob Dylan set, sat down on his milk crate in the middle of the audience and held us all spellbound with his beautiful songs and huge charisma. Every time I listen to "Peace and Happiness" I think of that night and mourn his passing. God bless you Ted.
@RobertdeSaintLoup That's truly a bittersweet memory, Robert. I knew Ted's music only from our local public broadcasting radio station (90.1 KPFT in Houston) where they played his songs fairly frequently. I want to say I discovered his music there...but I think his music discovered ME there, and has kept hold of me ever since.
thank u varuscelli!!! this is ted hawkins son<!you r a true angel!I dnt

There were songs I heard him sing there on the boardwalk in Venice Beach that I've never heard on recordings. Now, 25 years later, i can only remember partial lyrics from these songs. I think one might have been called "Groovy Little Thing"
@vamoalla9 Groovy Little Things is actually on two of Ted's albums. The Next Hundred Years (just before his death) and The Final Tour (produced a few years after he died, but done with live versions of his recorded songs). Both are excellent collections.
@vamoalla9 Ahh, I envy folks who were able to do that. What memories those must be, although for him I'm sure the busking days must have been pretty tough much of the time.
OH MY GOODNESS! I have loved Ted's music my ENTIRE life, but I have NEVER seen any videos of him! I can't believe Im watching him sing! Thank you so much for posting these videos!!!
@neacygirl Thank you, neacygirl. I was in the same boat as you...listened to him for many years but never saw any live or video performances -- and those are apparently very rare. Make sure you see the other couple of ones I posted (they're short versions, but worth watching).
Why was Ted not picked of the street earlier,to sing and make records for us . The man sang for yrs before someone noticed him, and i think he died after about 3yrs or something and was diabetic . But what an artist one of the most under rated of all time, he was amazing. Thanks to Varuscelli for this peace of history, its just a pity you could not find my favorites, one hundred miles and the constitution, but thanks you've made my day
@1redman01@1redman01 Most of it is available via Amazon (for an easy route). Some CDs are harder to find. I had to go through eBay route for a couple of them, but I have what I think is a complete collection. Some of the CDs are recorded live. But as for live performance video, except for the Amazing Grace VHS, I don't know of of any.
Glad you all are enjoying the video. For big Ted Hawkins fans who can find a copy of the Amazing Grace video, it's a real treat. But, the video is only on VHS, except for an occasional laserdisc version that can be found (but just about no-one can play laserdiscs these days -- and lots of people can still play VHS tapes).
possibly my favorite of his songs, although it's hard to pick one, THANK YOU so much again for uploading these, i ordered my copy of Amazing Grace today!!!! Can't wait for it to arrive!!!!
Thanks, skewedgirl. I was wondering if anyone was ever going to comment on this particular one. And you're right. I'd give a lot to be able to have seen him in person, but I'm grateful for the music we still have.
not just one song .this guy is great.
