Really it's stupid to ask Voice Actors about the series they do as they don't know much about it, they know enough to be able to portray their given characters.

The problem is that japanese ppl generally use the last name much more/ have way more "politeless words" and stuff. English doesn't even have a "politeness version" of "you", unlike German, Spanish or french, how do you translate that? You can't have people of the same age continiously use each other's last names if you want it to sound like natural english that can be understood even by absolute noobs that don't have any previous knowdledge of anime (that's what a dub should do)

@KendrixTermina You could have Shinji always go "...could you please...?" etc and Asuka telling him to stop being so uptight instead of the first name thing, because... it's really a different cultural thing, that'd be like leaving the pre-eating-ritual phrase untouched... As for Shinji's adressing of Gendo, he really IS saying "otou-san" and not "chichi." in the original, and he doesn't really openly decide that he hates the guy until the Bardiel incident, and tries to win his rescognition for

the rest of the series. (Misato notably uses the latter word except in flashbacks) You might even say that this says something about his personality... As for that Jaffe guy, i just hope they don't listed to him too much, it's openly stated that the religuous-ish stuff is mere decoration. is it too hard for westerners to believe that Christianity is weird foreighn stuff in other parts of the world? It's just like us using greek mythology in fiction.

But just so well, I like good stuff, but I'm no fan of much anything, so my ability care about the obtuse matters of a series however good it may be, is limited to the practicals.

[cont.] So it sounds totally unnatural when people talk that way in anime. The writers' primary goal is always to create dialogue that sounds natural in the target language. If doing that requires them to substitute one form of character nuance with another, equivalent one, that's perfectly acceptable. That is how translation and adaptation work.

The same stuff applies to the use of "Dad." English speakers don't address their parents as "mother" and "father" unless they were born in 1890.

I think V's example was best, Luke calls Vader 'Father' and it worked out fine in the original dub as well. The 'Miss Ayanami' thing I can see being dropped, and it WOULD be easy to dodge that problem, but I think they should have done it better.

You do realize the whole "Stop calling me by my last name" schtick could easily be rewritten in English to something along the lines of "Stop acting so formal" or "Stop being so uptight around me". The fact of the matter is, English speakers rarely refer to each other by only their last names (unless you go to private school) or with honorifics like Mr. and Miss (unless you're in the service industry or talking to someone 15 years older than you). Eh, the honorifics thing is just something you have to accept. I don't think the concept really translates into English, anyway. After all, no matter how formal our relationship is to someone in the US, we still almost always call him by their first name. I dunno what they'll do for Rebuild 2.0, though.

Similarly, no one calls their dads "Father" anymore. I mean really.

I understand the nuance is lost, but I just think it's not really a surprise or a big deal.

good video. i personaly didn't like the new dub as much as the old one, but it was still pretty solid
