The Prokofiev piano sonatas (all of them) are among the most tightly-constructed pieces of music ever created. Just because they're complex does not mean they're random or lack form in any way.
It sounds like he isnt using pedal at the section that starts at 1:31 but I cant hold on the top note and play the others. i wonder if it is better to use pedal in this case or just let the melody resonate on its own. Any suggestion?
gosh i love this... i think more people my age should listen to stuff like this to truly appreciate music...play this and then play some beyonce and it'll just make you cringe. if you like this you should check out cesare pugni as well. [my favorite ballet is still swan lake, Tchaikovsky was a genius!]
The piece sounds like banging because you don't know a damn thing about good music (or punctuation). So go back to your hole and go listen to Snoop Dog or whatever crap that you think isn't so "random".
@liuzhen2006 thats the beauty of this period of music. its music that strikes the author at a whim. consider the form, structure, and hierarchy of romantic, classical, and baroque music (although not so much romantic), and then look at this. its completely discordant. most people will not find this beautiful, but the lack of form, and the story that this music tells is so much more vibrant (in my opinion) than previous music.
Genius piece, i mean this is ReaLLy original and it sounds like more than great, an other dimension of music! I've liked the Mozart passage "in between prokofiev" at 1.54. Since 2.53 it becomes crazy i love it
This performer is SOOOOOOOO much better than Murray McLachlan. He totally sucked at this piece, it was almost impossible to listen to. This performer is amazing at prokofiev.
Prokofiev. The most under-appreciated genius of our time. Too bad so many of the us tend to gravitate to the "one four five" harmonies that Prokofiev himself despised.
@iansquared3 Pick up a guitar. Play a G then a C then a D. I IV V represents the first, 4th, and 5th notes of the G major scale of whatever scale the key of your song is in. You're using chords built on the 1st, 4th, and 5th tones of that scale. It's basically the simplest type of chord progression you can have.
@mightyafrowhitey ahhh i can imagine what that sounds like. Thats why i love prokofiev so much! i like to describe some prokofiev stuff as "beautifully ugly." He is a genius at creating unique, fascinating pieces of music.
when I listen to this one of Prokofiev's genial pieces, it seems to me that he 'd like to run away as fast as he can. Like in madness, thats one of the most important things about it, I think
Thank you for posting this sonata, of which Prokofiev himself once remarked that is was "too slow" to make people enthusiastic, to be honest I had never heard it but I like it a lot, great playing, good luck with your career.
well i dont have a camcorder but i am having a recital in may and i am hoping to get that recorded by the professors .....my girlfriend just got a new phone and i am hoping to maybe record with that and put up something at least.....i will keep you posted
Its so f*ckin hard! Haha :p

to me, this piece has the same feeling as the third movement of beethoven's moonlight sonata. well played, Bronfman.

he was good at making original convoluted music that was awesome

I love the contrast of the middle section to the rest of the piece. What is better than having the worlds of tonality and atonality fused together?

This comment has received too many negative votes show
the problem with this is it doesnt seem to go anywhere
its just meandering about and it feels pompous, like "see what i can do" was the motive behind making it
LackingLack0 3 years ago
I respectfully disagree, and say that this is a very noble piece, and very optimistic. It isn't arrogance, it's just being "high" on life. :)
