  • Love that MARS light on the engine at 0:41!

  • THE ORIGINAL CROSS-OVER EPISODE...ADAM-12 AND EMERGENCY!

  • An Adam 12 connection-WAY cool!

btw is anyone aware of the fact that Mark Harmon was on an episode of EMERGENCY playing some sort of "Animal Safety Officer" or something like that?

I don't think the concept got spun off ( for obvious reasons) but THAT was a hoot!

  • Awesome theme song!

  • Wow, nice Mars light on that ladder truck.

  • I was born in '64, watched this show when I wad a kid, became a Paramedic in 1984, met Randy Mantooth almost eight years ago. He was flattered by my being inspired by him and Kevin. He remains an ardent supporter of Paramedics and is a genuinely nice man.

  • Being a young turk, I didn't realize "Emergency" is a spinoff of "Adam-12". I watched Emergency all the time back in the early 80s when I was a kid, but I seldom, if ever watched Adam-12. Pretty neat though how the characters tie together in the two series. Even in the old days, policemen and firemen were still cool. They didn't have all the new gear like they do now, but they were still tough as nails, clever, and brave......great role models for kids to aspire to.

  • OK can someone explain to me why the Hospital staff got top billing over Gage and DeSoto? This seem like it was the firemen's show with the hospital staff as the backup.

  • @AlisoViejoMan I honestly don't know. It might be that Fuller, Troup and London were all fairly well known by 1972 (especially Troup and London). Whereas Mantooth and Tighe were relative unknowns. That's a total guess on my part though. Of course, there was the love triangle between London, Troup and Jack Webb but I doubt that had any bearing on it whatsoever.

  • @badwx Yes, that's more than likely the reason. Robert Fuller was also well known for his roles on the westerns "Laramie" and "Wagon Train". Also, according to one two books that I have on Jack Webb and "Dragnet", Fuller took the role of Dr. Brackett because he was tired of waiting for westerns to come back into vogue (in fact when "Emergency" premiered both "Bonanza" and "Gunsmoke" were on their last legs).

  • plain and simple...AWESOME. I was born in '71 and played firefighters with my older brother influenced by this series. We even had the firefighter helmets that came out from this show. I saw this in Panama City, Panama, of course in Spanish, but when I moved to the U.S when I was 12, I got to watch it in the 80's again.

  • God, those hook and ladder trucks are ANCIENT...

  • Too cool!! My daughter and I used to watch reruns of this on Nick, before she became too cool to watch TV with Dad any longer!

  • The theme written by Nelson Riddle is killer!

  • I don't know what it is, but this is like the coolest opening for a cop/fire show I've ever seen. This is great!

  • I grew up watching Emergency, Dragnet, Adam-12, Starsky and Hutch, The Rookies, S.W.A.T., all of those shows of the 70's and possibly late 60's.WOW! Just watching some of these clips brings back memories. Makes me feel old.

  • Too cool!

  • Those are some of the strangest light bars I have ever seen.love the twinsonic on the newer truck later in the series.

  • Do you think in 35 years fans will be looking back at....? Hawaii Five O (the new one) and looking at the clips with great nostalgia? Somehow i doubt it.

Emergency was a huge favorite of mine growing up. The stories were the stars and the characters seemed like real people. You got to know each of them and their quirks. Just like real people!! You felt like you were hanging with friends each week. And a new adventure.

  • I never understood why they changed the theme song in the later seasons. I HATED IT!

The original was SO much better.

  • if someone actually has a video (videos) of the pilot movie, like the ones for The Steel Inferno, could you post it (them) on youTube for me? I am a real big fan of the TV show, like I was for Adam-12, Dragnet, etc.... Thanks.

  • Crown apparatus, among the best and long gone. Too bad.

  • I was always a huge fan of Emergency and really love this opening....awesome!

  • I never realized the Adam-12 guys appeared in the first episode! But -- wasn't there an episode where the Station 51 guys were shown watching Adam-12 on TV, too? Weird!

  • @saskabush2006 What was really funny is that there is an episode of Emergency where Jonny is mad because he missed the ending of an episode of Adam-12. Throughout the episode he goes around asking people if they knew how it ended..

But yeah, Emergency was launched from Adam-12 the same way Adam-12 was launched from Dragnet.

  • and a episode of Adam-12 where the crew from Emergency! cameo as well (about the time Adam-12 switched over to the AMC Matador).

  • So cool when they had the Adam 12 guys on Emergency! I watched these on re-runs

    when I was a kid.

  • There were actually three squads used during the filming of the show. The 1968 Dodge Power Wagon that was in the pilot & two 1971/72 Dodge Rams But sadly only one survived The second of the two Dodge Rams was restored and loaned to the Smithsonian and has Since been returned to LAcoFD museum tobe reunited with Engine 51 which has finally retired and is being restored to look it did during the show the Crown that was first used as Engine 51 is also at the at The LAcoFD Museum.

  • When I was young, 'bidding to be a firefighter, and am currently fire official and such television series EMERGENCY achieves see almost all its chapters, special series, is an honor to be a fireman

  • Man, yhose vehicles look so ancient!

  • This was one of my favorite shows also when I was a kid. My friend and I used play Emergency. A fishing tackle box with assorted items found in garage and basement became pretend medical tools. Our bikes were the EMS/Fire truck. We would set up mock emergency situations and race to them on our bikes rescuing our friends that we staged in the mockups. Now that's using your imagination!!!. Something that seems to lack in today's youth.

  • One of my favorite shows as a kid! Unbelievable!

  • It's pretty sad. Back then, good acting, smart characters and good scripts made for good shows. Now we call smart remarks, insults and anger good shows. My, how our standards have slipped... or plummeted.

  • Amen Brother!

  • no one would watch that. besides if they saw my uncle as everyday person he is they'd wonder about his sanity :D anyway, that last messege of mine was meant for you. Sorry, testtube.

  • I had a Tonka fire truck and you could hook a hose up to it and water would shoot out of the water canon. I love the theme music too. One of the best. Also I remember I had 2 Hotwheels versions of the Squad 51 rescue and firetruck.

  • Oh,but Rescue Me and The Shield are "what we want to see",didn't you know?

  • And they say,all Hollywood is good for is mindless entertainment that wastes our time.

  • Makes sense it was a spin-off of Adam-12,I don't remember it being 2 hours though.

  • Actually it wasn't a spin-off, but Jack Web was notorious for cross-over moments to promote his other shows. Again, he was doing it before everyone else.

  • The pilot movie was 2 hours. The regular show was one hour. There was about 2 to 3 minor calls, and would end with a multiple alarm fire/rescue.

  • one of my 3 favorite shows when i was a kid

  • I had two toy firetrucks that I always loved playing with as a kid thanks to this show,

When ever we had a fire in the winter I always had a blast racing them right up to the fireplace.

  • I still have the original Engine 51 & Squad 51 Hot Wheels . 20 years ago I built a Station 51 to house them in !

  • Fantastic!

  • Wow... thanks for the trip in the wayback machine. I had forgotten that the Adam-12 boys were in the pilot!

  • In 1994 the LACoFD renamed the fire station on Universal Studios Station 51. Thus, there really is an Engine 51, Foam 51 and... SQUAD 51!

  • Love the shaking camera. When the tones go off in the middle of the night, it is possible to get to your position quickly but I guarantee there will be some shaking going on until you get to the scene.

  • They were doing it long before the MTV gen did. Thank Jack Web for that one!!!!

  • the crown firecoach was good looking truck at that time of the 70`s era the fire trucks that are use today are twice big and heavy too. yes the ladder truck look cool too bad they don`t make them anymore but the new ones today are good

  • That's one very gorgeous ladder truck!!!! ;>)

    The Crowns ain't bad either!!

  • cool intro of the Emergency pilot. and yes it the show that started to every fire dept. to upgrade the paramedic services . also i love the show as kid .

  • It's a show that stood for many positives and inspiried me to be in public service. Good deed and compassion without expectation of return

  • One of the shows that literally changed the world. This opening sequence has Jack Webb written all over it. And Nelson Riddle cought the spirit of the show perfectly in his music!

  • No kidding! I'd like to take my own pulse before and after this theme song, and BP and O2 sats. This is amazing!

  • Could you post more of the eposide? That would be great!

  • When I was growing up...this was the front line stuff all the way...now, all this equipment is considered museum displays....kinda makes me sad in a way.

  • The Newer Engine 51 (Ward LaFrance) is still in service in California

  • how old is that Engine 51(#2)now?

  • 30 years old.

  • Are there any recent photos of it? Does it still look the same or has it's lights been updated, etc.?

  • It was overhauled about 20 years ago.

3w.emergencyfanscom<slash>things<slash>engine_51<slash>e51yosemitehtm Just replace the proper hypertext goodies and that's the website where info can be found.

  • Thanks!!

  • Except for the addition of a light bar (SMART!!!), the truck still looks exactly the same. I was expecting htem to put a white reflective stripe on it, white upper cab, cab enclosed, etc., but I'm pleasantly surprised. It was overhauled, but still historically accurate.

  • Incidentally, the Firecoach is in the LaFd museum...

Squad 51 is in the Smithsonian... as will Engine 51 when it's finally retired....

  • Interesting, thanks.

  • This was my favorite show when i was growing up. I used to watch the reruns every day. the best show ever!

  • Only here on You Tube could you find something as cool as this! I had wondered if there was a clip of the pilot of Emergency! and viola, here it is!

  • Glad you enjoyed it! I had debated about posting it, thinking maybe someone else already had. I did a search and didn't see it so I sent it up.
