And for a novelization of sociopolitical and religious conflict in the area, Eliot Pattison's Water Touching Stone - a very moving novel encompassing ancient to modern history and anthropology in the Xianjiang area.
I discovered AMNH's videos through "From Tibet to Infinity" and they blow me away. The Silk Road is absolutely fascinating - I wish I could travel it. Few Americans are clued into Central Asia and its history - now we read about Uighurs, AfPak war, &c, but not the rich, deep history of a huge area of the world in which probably every people and culture and religion interacted and coexisted. I recommend Colin Thurbrons book on the Silk Road.
The Exhibition "Traveling the Silk Road" at the AMNH is one of the best exhibitions I have ever seen. I, my spouse & our guests have enjoyed it very much.
The video presentation given by Professor Mark Norell is very informative and with his amazing story he inspires visitors to learn more about Silk Road, the ancient trade Route which connected East and West. Thank you so much for organizing it. I would like to recommend everyone to visit it.

A horseback or camelback journey along the silk road would be the journey of a lifetime.
