@Helmut83 annapurna has the highest death rate i believe due to incredible avalanche danger. But it probably isn't the most "difficult"

Reading "The Last Step", by Rick Ridgeway, about the '78 American ascent, which Wittaker also lead. Good book.

The part that sticks in my mind was when Ridgeway described the anger that some of the climbers on the team had when they realized that they were just being used as mules to haul loads up to the high camps and not being considered for a summit bid. Whittaker and his wife appeared to be saving themselves for a summit try while others did the dirty work. He mentioned that one climber said if Whittaker tries to use physical force he'd get an ice ax planted in his head. Whittaker

Read it while hiking up to K2 base camp. Concordia, the the throne room, is amazing. Great book, good spirit on the expedition.

For a definitive account of this expedition, please look for the book "In the Throne Room of the Mountain Gods" by Galen Rowell. He was one of the climbers.
