  • You know those foldable reflector pads that people put in their front windshield? What if you put that in your hammock, under a down sleeping bag? Would that provide significantly more warmth/protection from butt chills?

  • @lifepoint03 They work...lots of folks use them.

  • I'm definitely a N00b at hammock hanging but I have a question. Instead of all the pads and underquilts and lines, would it be possible to just have a really good sleeping bag in the hammock? I like to keep things simple and although these are wonderful videos, it all seems a bit too much for my tastes. I may be way off, IDK, but I'm doing a NOBO on the AT in March 2012 and want to keep it cheap and simple. Any advice?

  • @TammyLoves2Read If your laying in a bag in the hammock you will compress the down underneath you. A lot have folks have done this and very few get through the night without getting a chilled back and buttocks in temps from 70º and below. I say try it out before you hit the AT and find if it will work for you. Just throw a single pad in and you will be good to go. I for one an not much for the AT shelters but maybe for you a pad and bag and shelter will be the ticket. Have a blast on the trip.

  • What if you're a side sleeper?

  • @thebudgetgamer Lotta hangers side sleep. I go mummy lay.

  • shug it has been suggested to me recently that I should hang a poncho loner under my hamock or thermal pad in hammock or both. My question is mainly about the liner. How much help will the liner be either under the hammock or under me in the hammock with a wool blanket.

  • @Texasoutback They help a great deal hanging under you. The blanket will add warmth as well but I found them hard to mess with under me.

  • @shugemery Thanks shug, so the suggestion is to hang the liner under the hammock and cover myself with the wool blanket. Its that correct.

  • @Texasoutback I would use a wool blanket on top or a sleeping bag.

What-ever works for you....you'll know for sure once you give it a go. Take notes ....there is a learning curve. Best to you.

  • you talk about making this stuff but is there a vid of you actually makeing it? so far all i have watched is the tarp vid and then the ones on the hammocks.

  • @zekehooper Naw....I don't show me making one. There are many on YouTube though. I swear too much sewing.

  • ok i know nothing about hammocks. would sewing an under quilt right to the hammock be a bad idea? I realize summer time that might get hot but for fall winter and spring wouldn't that be a good idea? or am i totally off base on that?

  • @Popeye1117 It has been done....I have seen it on hammockforums. Not sure why it is not done more...

  • Man, I never thought about tree limbs falling on me...crap

  • @blacklanternz Always a concern camping...in tents as well but more-so in a hammock. Always look up and check feller.

  • 6:55 i pooped myself a little bit. Too funny! Another great vid!

  • @boomer1981abc Haaaaaa........clean up!!!! and thanks

  • Awesome video's, just got an ENO Hammock for my trip, thanks for all the good knowledge!

  • @1jbunceiii I hope it takes and you hang goodly!

  • Finally bought up a hammock Shug. Got a WBBB thanks to your recommendation and many on HF. Really a great hammock! Anyway, studying on underquilts a little right now. Have you ever used a full length under quilt? Seems like it might be more versatile....maybe compact it in the middle to keep you cooler on warm nights, but would keep you warmer head to toe on the colder ones. Any thoughts?

  • @TigerRagFishingTeam I backpack so I use a 1/2 UQ....takes less space in the pack.

  • @shugemery Ok, makes sense. I see a lot more 1/2 and 3/4 length UQ's on HF and was wondering why. I like the comfort so far with my pad between the 2 layers of the blackbird so I'm going to stick with that and see how it does. I can see the advantages of the UQ though. Thanks for the feedback and the other video link!

  • been on HF for awhile but never get tired of these videos. I learn something new everytime

  • @Newton240sx Cheers....... hammocks have a lot to cover.

  • I too would like to know if you made your hammock, and if so how?

  • @VanDuzer03 Go to tothewoodsdotnet/HomemadeHammock2.html and you'll find it.

  • @shugemery Thanks Bro.

  • @drummerthingx Message sent....

  • Naw.....feelin' much better now. Pretty warm today-got to feel better and enjoy some of these 52 degree temperatures! Thanks for the well wishes!

  • Good stuff as usual. Good overview. Finally trying to take the time to watch the series. A little under the weather today so good time to watch. Thanks for the entertainment and information!

  • @TigerRagFishingTeam I hope I do not make you sicker!!!! Be well.

  • I don't doubt that the Mamba can get you down very low, but I just want to make sure I understand - you were okay down to -2F with the TQ and just the 2 pads underneath?? or with an UQ?

  • @Videos1970 With the Winter UQ ... small dad under my feet.

  • @mythic89 You get a very "flat" lay on an angle. Straight is sorta like a banana.

  • @R1200cPhoenix

I just keep mine on the ground under the tarp ...... just not in a puddle. some folks hang them off of the hammock ridgeline.

  • i thought a hammock was just a hammock. never tried one, but this is way tooo many "add-ons", I'm better off on the ground with less contraptions- a tent and a bag.

  • @ez2curanut

Do YOUR thing Feller........... getting out is getting out.

  • @shugemery true true. agreed. kudos on the video, i see you spent some time in post production.

  • Shug, You made me laugh out loud! Very entertaining and informative. I have hammock camped a long time, but only recently bought an ENO. Then I found the forum and your vids - holy crap-ola! Suddenly my eyes have been opened to whoopie slings, and a whole world I had not even considered. So thanks for the info - and thanks for the great music! I love me some bluegrass - gonna go check out your site...

  • @LALizzie I heard you giggling at me!!!

That is cool .... lots of new hammock ideas out there. For one, I like the dinking and fiddling with hammocks .... fun.

Thanks on the bluegrass .... just a picker for fun but put my heart in it.

    Shug

  • Love the video but your system is too complicated for me. all you need is the sleeping bag and pad. PUT THE SLEEPING OVER THE HAMMOCK, SURROUNDING IT. This will take care of the wind problem and your down bag won't be compacted when you lay on it, using the full fill to keep you warm.

  • @HammockerSam

That did not seem to work for me .... coulda been the bag.

Glad your system is working for you.

  • @shugemery Thanks for the vid Shug. Love your stuff!

  • could you give the dimensions of your under quilt please?

    Thanks in advance

  • great information! tnx mate

  • Hey Shug, a Q from a fellow hammockforum member...

Why are the quilt not full-length? Would'nt it be warmer with a full length quilt, no need for the pad under the legs.. The added weight for a full length quilt could'nt be much more than the one you have.

  • It is mainly the bulk in my backpack...... full lengths take up a lot of room ....

Either is good. if I were a car camper I would go full length!

  • Ahh Bulk issue, I understand.. I'm a bulky guy with a bulky backpack ;)

  • From the Ren & Stimpy Show "Out West":

Oh, Lord loves a hangin', that's why he give us necks

It tightens up our vocal chords, & loosens up our pecs

So if you are a horse thief & guilty to the bone

    Go ahead & blame a friend & you won't hang alone ...

More in your mail box feller...

  • Beautiful man......

  • another fine video sir! cant wait for the others!

  • Thank you shug. Just what many of us needed to start hammock camping.

  • To cool.......

  • yo shug ,

    you are officially my hero!!

    LOL

  • Shucks .... officials make me a might nervous....

  • Hey Shug!!

GREAT video series. I was wondering if at the end of the series, could you do a video on your attire. Is that half - down jacket you wear DIY? What are you go to garments during summer months? I was also wondering about boots - both during the summer and winter months. Thanks for all the hard work showin us noobs :)

  • I put it on my list!.....

  • Thanks Shug. I think I'm starting to get it. I've got a lot to learn and I love having fun while I'm learning.

  • entertaining and informitive video Shug. Thank you...I gotta see you perform live someday.

  • Shug is the video guy .... Sean is the live feller.

  • I have been hangin'. OH ya. And every piece of warm hangin' gear in this video solves a problem I encountered. Just trying to get into my sleeping bag in the hammock was enough to send me back to the ground. Oh man ... I am going to watch this again.

  • That is good, good, good.

  • your doing the lords work my friend

wish you could have been at mt rodgers hang

that was some darn fine winter hanging

  • Man ... I had MR Envy!

  • We may try someday Got the ULA Catalyst thanks for advice shug

  • Great pack!!!

  • Your videos are just great. I think i'll try my first winter night in hammock with confidence!

    Thank you.

  • Yes ... con-fi-dense!!!!

  • Save big money at Menards ROTFL!

  • Save on Larson screen doors!

  • Great series Thanks. I like the SPE.

  • I too like SPE ... a great way to pad.

  • continued?...man...hehe! I enjoyed your teachings my friend :o) I also love ham-mock-ing ...But I need the big warm underquilt! Well actually two...hehe! See my dilemma ? It's two of everything! 5stars as always :o)

  • Oh ... you do need a big fat UQ or two in your neck of the woods!

    Thankee Mr.Green

  • I enjoy all the videos you make.

But for the life of me, I don't get the whole hammock thing?

  • Well ..... just a choice. I am a dinker and find my tents kinda ... well .... boring. I like fooling around with my stuff in the woods. Again ... just another option as a way to get out and camp.

  • It looks fun, I give you that. I get the "Can I do it?" mentality of meeting a good old challenge.

But hanging in the winter wind?

    Our winter wind?

The type of winter wind we have up here where we both live?, that can stall a car?, freeze a bird out of the air? and turn our boots into something the feels like putting on cold plywood?

    and on that topic:

when you hop into the hammock you take off your boots, but so far I have not seen what you do to protect them from getting drifted in?

  • I get more time in the winter .... i love it! summer is my least favorite time to backpack .. bugs, heat and more heat.

As to the boots, i just open them as wide as I can so if they freeze... and they do ... i can get my foot in. I just keep them under my tarp ... nothing fancy.

  • Hmmmm?

There must be a way, so type of hammock system that could be used to end up with a warmer boot over a boot that is filled with drifted in snow and is rock hard?

  • Well ..... in winter .... I take what i get. Never have had snow iN my boots ... but they are rock hard. Some put their boots in a stuff sack and sleep with them. not me ... i find that uncomfortable. After i force my foot in the boot in the morning they warm up pretty quickly with camp chores.

  • When were you in Tupelo? I wouldn't think it would be that could there...

  • I know .... 2 below came out as Tupelo ..... give me the blues.

  • Well done Shug ... like the way you put this together. Very informative!

  • This is a great series! I think he actually said Ham-Mock once instead of the usual hammick. Good job on the video Shug!

  • Soon to say Ham-Lock.

    Thanks.
