this tool is really hard to use me and my dad found out to get the hooks to stay you need to catch the inter valve spring it takes awhile but it can be done my advice is pay a little more money and get a better one
I bought that same valve spring compressor at my local auto parts store to use on my 86 350 SBC and the grabber hooks just kept slipping off of the spring. That tool was so frustrating it was ridiculous.

Just get a socket to fit above the valve and then hold on it use a hammer and just hit the socket the valve spring pops out

He should show us how to refit the retainer and the caps afterwards.
Actually, you don't need the compressor to remove them.
