It was an extremely limited New York City audience's jaded reaction to the film, not a true cross section of society. Not only limited audience but extremely limited exposure of the film itself - selectively released in only v.large cities in the US at the time. The film only had wide release nearly 10 yrs. later, in the summers of '81 & '82 and even then only in midnite 'cult' flick shows at some venues. Had anyone ever dared to release it generally in '72, John Waters would've been jailed.
