Partially correct. The open differential and under power engine plays a large part in the AW11's instability problem in aggressive driving situations. The transfer of mass corner to corner is optimal in the AW11 chassis. You want a lot of weight on the rear end of the chassis of the car as you exit the corner for traction purposes, but the lack of a factory Limited slip, short wheelbase, and insufficient power creates a twitchy characterized car.
Also, in the same category, there is a car that beat them both : the MX-5 Miata NA 1600cc. As light, same power but with a shorter wheel base, which matches the level of power of the cars :p.
By the way, it is safer to ride the hills at night simply because you can see the incoming traffic, and then can't be surprised ;)
night time video's tend to suck, they probably just did the daytime stuff to make a video but do night time stuff all the time for fun and to go faster ;)
Miatas are nice but the BP series engine isn't exactly known for being reliable. On the other hand the 4AGE is known for its reliability. They are both nice cars but mazda still needs to work on the reliability factor.
The MR2 oversteers in exits (under power) simply because it is a midship and when you accelerate, the added weight on the rear (cuz of the mass transfer) is simply too high for the tires to handle.
A 86 is the opposite, because it has more mass to the front (FR layout), so oversteer in entries --> understeer in exits.
Conclusion : 86 = entry oriented (to go fast out you have to go fast in) / MR2 = exit oriented (go slower in entries, but use the power earlier to help the exit cornering)
i have a SC mr2 and my friend has an AE86 with pretty much same suspension and its pretty even in the mountains. Mr2 is more powerful with the SC thats how i can get away
Oversteer? Are you guys kidding? I had a MKI MR2 and it understeered like a bitch. Only way I could make that thing rotate was dropping the clutch into a lower gear after turning in, then flooring it.
ditto. if anybody's seen topgear with the new elise. he said it has to much understeer. lotus came down and said your driving it wrong. and basically the demo was him drifting around the track. HA!
The MR2 will tend to understeer if u let the power drop off, its better to drop it back a cog and keep it in the powerband so u can adjust the angle with the throttle (this seems to work in my NA AW11, but i'm still learning) A turbo would also help lol
Not to be a jerk, but you need to hone your driving skills. My '89 NA loves to go sideways, I've owned a lot of sports cars and it's among the most oversteery of the bunch. Watch your entry speed and practice with the right revs, gear and throttle play - once you're sliding DON'T LIFT!
Do some research, you clearly either did not actually own the car, or just simply can't drive.
Well I do suppose your car could have been underpowered severely, but the mr2 was known for its over-steer, particularly in the Mk2 pre-93' models. The Mk1 also had a tendency to over-steer under power. The Mk2's over-steering problem was so bad that it was deemed "dangerous to drive". Toyota wanted to achieve a super car feel in the suspension, which led to a snap over-steer response.
max power we love you guys.... team evil is a touge/track drift club in indianapolis, in, usa that also prefers aw11's and ae86s tho we do allow e30s and s13s and a rare st165....
I love the Aw11's...They look like rocketships. I want to get me a supercharged one SOOO bad. Then I want to make it rev to 11000...and supercharged. Then I'll be happy.
I have a supercharged AW11. Perhaps it's the extra weight of the supercharger, the car does tend to oversteer a bit. But it is otherwise a killer handling car!
fully would ay, but I lost the original copy so there's only the google video one and this one now (both lesser quality) sorry :(
I'll make another one some day, just gotta do some more driving and get heaps of better footage, I was running out while making this one! promise I won't lose the next one lol
yo honestly can someone send me this vidoeo i'd like to keep it in my mr2 video collections.. message me for my email if its possible.. Thanks a bunch =)
The aw11 has pretty good balance (Less oversteery then an ae86) but takes a while to get used to. they are a more rigid, smaller car so feel like a go cart in comparison. They handle better then an ae86 because the weight is in the right place making it able to go through corners fast and be agile.
I've always wanted to know - does the AW11 handle better than the AE86 because of lighter weight, or does it have too much oversteer due to MR driveline setup?

totally depends on the driver, I believe the AW11 has better handling for track racing from stock than an ae86, but that's just my opinion ay...

The AE86 is ligther than the AW11. But the AW11 has a mid-engine. I don't know which one would handle better.

the car has zero oversteer with good tires in good weather, when the weather gets a bit dodgy so does the rear of the car :)
