  • I think it is a mistake to add so much food to a new bin as it takes the worms some time to adjust to their new environment. Food should be cut up as small as possible and buried in the bedding, not just placed on top. Blending is ideal. Apart from organic matter such as food scraps, lots of moist shredded paper and cardboard should be added to keep the worms comfortable and to give them a balanced diet. Cover with hessian or moist towel. Do not overfeed as bin will start to smell.

  • Digging the child labour!

Seriously, I wish my dad had spent time like this with me!

  • thats a cool video

  • fantastic. very nice to see a parent educating their kids with hands on experience. i am very impressed. keep up the good work.

  • worms do have teeth

  • Earthworms don't have teeth - although they do have mouths that are muscular and open wide for fitting in food. "Food" is usually decaying matter, including leaves. It is softened by moisture and microrganisms before the worm eats it, so teeth aren't necessary!

  • @fraserarts99 Nope, no teeth for the worms. They do, however, have a gizzard like chickens.

  • @fraserarts99 Red wigglers don't. They have gizzards just like birds.

  • A red wiggler at 2:57, thats why there called wigglers. Nice Video Thanks

  • Surely you don't keep the container in the sun.

  • Haha mind they dnt bite you.... love it :)

  • biting worms I love it and coconut hair and boy worms and girl worms LOL

    Great video and great kids.

  • I saw on another video that it helps if you freeze the kitchen scraps first. It helps to break it down faster. We're going to get some worms soon!

  • Freezing the scraps kills fruit fly eggs and other things that live on the food. You are not breaking the food down faster by freezing it. Freezing is a form of preservation.

  • Nice job with your worm farm! Looks like your kids had so much fun helping with the project! You are a great father! -George from Rye, NY PS. Happy Father's Day!

  • Grande il bimbo con la maglia di Luca Toni!!! Forza Italia!!!

  • Love the wormy farm lads. Crikey! That looks a mess, but fun!

  • Nice video, you have cute, bright boys. You are good with them, very patient and teaching at the same time. Good show!

    "Err... mines not moving.."

  • @joshfingers555

Einstein once said that only universe and stupidity are endless. But shortly after that he added: "Maybe the universe is not endless"

If you've found yourself somewhere in the story do not worry it is accidentally.

  • awsome kids it seems that it there phather tought them alot about worms cool

  • Too cute, your kids are lovely. How much soil do each of these create at any time, anyone know?

  • as much stuff u put in it

  • Anyone know if there is an easy way to get red worms for free (or the cost of shipping)?

  • I have acarus, or mites, in my worm bin.

They don´t hurt the worms, I think, but they eat the food.

Do I have to get rid of them? How?

    Thanks 4 your answers

  • the mites will be fine in the bin. i have maintained my red wiggler bin for over a year now. the mites and acarus have been no problem for me. just be sure to stay away form meat, dairy, and citrus.

  • I really love how your oldest son recognizes that everything is living. What kind hearted children. A good video all around.

  • great video and what adorable kids!

  • Absolutely brilliant video! I hope it encourages other potential worm-keepers...

  • your a brilliant father to your boys. keep up the good work. i'm starting up a rather small makeshift composter of worms

  • i sell these worm compostors and various types of worms from lob worms , dendrobaena and mealworms etc. 07980607450 anytime and ask for eamon

  • what happens in winter?

  • I get cold when I go and put stuff in the worm farm! Other than that nothing, the worms will be fine!

  • It cools down a bit?

  • He knows a lot about worms but he doesn't know the oil from the kids hands aren't good for the worms. Good things to teach the kids though. If those boys are anything like my brothers were, those worms are in for a lot of torture.

  • I didn't have that impression from these boys at all. And their father seems to have taught them compassion. Cool!

My brothers, incidentally, were like YOUR brothers! Haha. So I fancy I know a worm-sadist when I see one. :D

  • great vid

  • I thought you were supposed to bury the food in the dirt so the worms can eat it not just place it on top?

  • Nope, them come to the surface and drag food down.

  • Oh! Thanks for the information. Loved the video. My daughter is only 2...but I am hoping to try and get her involved with being environmentally friendly before she even knows what it is. The hope is for it to be second nature for her.

  • do worms sleep?

  • Awesome video. I had to do my own worm farm on my own and it was less than 10% of the fun that these guys are having. Mission accomplished as far as I am concerned!

  • Fantastic! Nothing like showing the wider population how fun green initiatives can be! Keep up the great work and I look forward to the next installment....
