The composition, vocals and growling are all very good. The lyrics really give the song big bonus points though. The album is of course influenced by a point of view from what we see that Quantum Physics is showing us that we're all connected on the sub-atomic level. This is an idea that's being taken increasingly seriously. Mark said that this idea influences alot of songs on the album.

I agree that this is truly an amazing song but if you want to hear the best song ever made listen to Art Of Life from X Japan that song truly is the Art Of Fife

There music deals with fundamentalism, Politics, and Mayan Philosophy/Legend. Where this whole fantasy stuff comes from is beyound me. I mean really listen to Semblance of Liberty. You get the first Bush in there at one point say read my lips. Yeah that would so fit into fantasy.
In past albums they reference things like Mayan spirituality- 'Hunab Ku'. Now they are making references to Quantum Physics in their lyrics. Specifically the idea emerging that Quantum Physics is saying we are all linked at the sub-atomic level and we create our own realities. So we can 'Design Our Universe'. They're always developing and expanding their own views and expressing them in their their music, which also changes a bit in style from album to album.
That's only in this song and the title track though. Though KoH does have a few things about religion in there. Epica just does not like to put it front in center all the time.
From what I can see, most of the songs are influenced by a central philosophy. In this album it is the power of our thoughts to 'Design Our Universe'. Its a concept album just as The Divine Conspiracy was about the idea that 'god created many religions for man as a test'. I think its good that their songs have a message but are open to wide interpretation as well. Their lyrics aren't too preachy or anything. But I personally am really impressed by them.
You would be right about the concept if not for songssuch as Our Destiny which is about Epica. Burn to a Cinder which is about Vampires. Tides of Time which is about I believe Simone and Marks grandmothers. White Waters which is just a love song. TDC was the only concept ablum they have so far.
"The album title, Design Your Universe, deals with new breakthroughs in quantum physics. It proves that we are all connected to each other on subatomic level. Also, it shows that we can create or at least influence matter with our thoughts a very interesting fact. Because it changes everything for us, our whole worldview collapses once you accept these facts and integrate them in your lives. So this had to become the new album title." not every song- great title though.
Plenty of progressive thinkers have presented theories that link quantum physics with spirituality. Its clear that Epica have followed such ideas as you can see them in their lyrics.
Agreed. I am just curious what exact path they speak of though. I guess its a blend of religious, mythical, scientific and occult ideas. It seems eavily influenced by eastern cultures with song titles such as Samadhi and references to the Bardo. I am pretty sure the "design your own universe" term was made popular by Alestor Crowly. If this is true, I am glad im not the only one to blend different belief systems together.
The name itself - Design Your Universe - is a play to a belief of some hermetic alchemists as well as some modern sicentists (I believe even Mr. Hawking made a similar statement?) that to an extend, our universe we percieve is just a sum of the other's perceptions. So basicaly if you alter the way you think about a given idea or object, you can - to an extend - modify it. Sort of telemorphosis. So lots of songs on this album deal with perception and with percieving the world as is.
Opera vocals in combination with grunts make Epica what they are. Nightwish is decent but not as 'Epic' haha as Epica. I mean do they have masterpieces that last for 13 + minutes? I'm not aware of.
theres no "real" due to the different ways. maybe you can compare it with prog. you have death-like prog bands (e.g. opeth) or power-like (e.g. dream theater). and so its with symphonic: pagan-like as haggard and power-like as epica or nightwish.
actually they do.listen to ghost love score..btw an "epic" song doesnt need to be 20 minutes long and boring to be epic. im not saying this is boring i think this is great but your comment didnt make any sense.nightwish (in the past) was great and epica is epica and they are really good too...so thats it.
everything's great about this song- the vocals, the verses, the grunts, the theatrical parts where the guy says 'go back!' etc and the lyrics themselves are very good.
The new album is just so awesome, I think I am gonna buy it soon..... my new favorite of the genre.... until Within Temptation bring the new album, but that is quite a long time....
Sharon says WT have an album coming out in about a year from now. For now I enjoy another Epica masterpiece. I still listen to the WT acoustic album as well but not very often, not compared to Design Your Universe.
this is one (if not the only) of the most promising songs in this album...I can't stop listening to this one, thou the album is practically the same as the past ones...
They have a new guitarist, they have much more solo's now then before and Simone changed the hight of her voice she's a bit lower now an way more Epic imho.
Wow. My mouth completely dropped open when those opening riffs came in. I cant believe the sound of the entire album. They stepped their game up big time. Im amazed at how they've never dissapointed me on a single album yet.
Well the truth is I used to like Nightwish until they got poppy and mainstream (even Once was a little poppy even with the exception of a few songs). I liked their first 4 or so albums, but they really aren't too great anymore. At least the old stuff is still there.
But this song by Epica ranks among symphonic metal's finest songs!
Every time I hear this song, I think she says "Answers to the Great Shamu" ( A popular Orca whale in SeaWorld)

reasons:
1. sounds more intense.
2. Good balance between female vocals and male growl vocals.

4. Instrumental parts are more technical with some what classical influence.
anyway... Its just my opinion but I think Nightwish is overrated now days.

They're always developing and expanding their own views and expressing them in their their music, which also changes a bit in style from album to album.
pantherz9103 2 years ago 7
That's only in this song and the title track though. Though KoH does have a few things about religion in there. Epica just does not like to put it front in center all the time.
Epica124 2 years ago 2
From what I can see, most of the songs are influenced by a central philosophy. In this album it is the power of our thoughts to 'Design Our Universe'. Its a concept album just as The Divine Conspiracy was about the idea that 'god created many religions for man as a test'. I think its good that their songs have a message but are open to wide interpretation as well. Their lyrics aren't too preachy or anything. But I personally am really impressed by them.
pantherz9103 2 years ago 5
You would be right about the concept if not for songssuch as Our Destiny which is about Epica. Burn to a Cinder which is about Vampires. Tides of Time which is about I believe Simone and Marks grandmothers. White Waters which is just a love song. TDC was the only concept ablum they have so far.

Mark quoted
"The album title, Design Your Universe, deals with new breakthroughs in quantum physics. It proves that we are all connected to each other on subatomic level. Also, it shows that we can create or at least influence matter with our thoughts a very interesting fact. Because it changes everything for us, our whole worldview collapses once you accept these facts and integrate them in your lives. So this had to become the new album title." not every song- great title though.

Just remember that the title is part of there New Age Dawns line. ;) And you are right is it s very great title. :)

@pantherz9103 As i stated before, This is surpassing Duality. Merging science and magic is a great form of overcoming duality.
I dont mean hokus pokus magic either. I mean in the spiritual sence. Hermetic Alchemy.
KoopdaVillain602 2 years ago
Plenty of progressive thinkers have presented theories that link quantum physics with spirituality. Its clear that Epica have followed such ideas as you can see them in their lyrics.

Agreed. I am just curious what exact path they speak of though. I guess its a blend of religious, mythical, scientific and occult ideas. It seems eavily influenced by eastern cultures with song titles such as Samadhi and references to the Bardo. I am pretty sure the "design your own universe" term was made popular by Alestor Crowly. If this is true, I am glad im not the only one to blend different belief systems together.
KoopdaVillain602 2 years ago

Epica are the masters at what they do.
pantherz9103 2 years ago
I agree. Nightwish is too pop-ish, and gets boring. This is what real Symphonic METAL should sound like!

Real Symphonic metal is Haggard
Crusnik222 2 years ago
Yeah, yeah :P
pmanderson 2 years ago
theres no "real" due to the different ways. maybe you can compare it with prog. you have death-like prog bands (e.g. opeth) or power-like (e.g. dream theater). and so its with symphonic: pagan-like as haggard and power-like as epica or nightwish.

exactly...
missghotica 2 years ago
actually they do.listen to ghost love score..btw an "epic" song doesnt need to be 20 minutes long and boring to be epic. im not saying this is boring i think this is great but your comment didnt make any sense.nightwish (in the past) was great and epica is epica and they are really good too...so thats it.
missghotica 2 years ago
....the poet and the pendulum is definitely epic!
j1964s20110 2 years ago 5
The Poet and the Pendulum by Nightwish is a few seconds shy of 14 minutes...

This comment has received too many negative votes show
The band is rocking pretty hard, but the vocals are not even interesting. Demon Hunter ftw

The vocals are amazing, the lyrics are amazing. Epica owns all.
pantherz9103 2 years ago 2
everything's great about this song- the vocals, the verses, the grunts, the theatrical parts where the guy says 'go back!' etc and the lyrics themselves are very good.
Got this in my head now:
Quantum Physics leads us to
Answers to the great taboos
We create the world around us
God is every living soul

Their new acoustic album is out, but are they working on a new one??? I do hope so! =) When's it coming out??
nightqueen14 2 years ago
Sharon says WT have an album coming out in about a year from now. For now I enjoy another Epica masterpiece. I still listen to the WT acoustic album as well but not very often, not compared to Design Your Universe.
pantherz9103 2 years ago
@pantherz9103 Yes
Wt is just acoustic not much rock !

I have plenty of room for both WT and epica on my ipod. But I listen to Epica a little bit more.

5:36-51; reminds me of riffage from Dimmu Borgirs "death cult armageddon".
Anyways, this song is fucking brillianht as is pretty much every other song on the album and every song they've ever written.
Simone, I worship you!

Arien said in a video to the Drummerszone, that they got a little bit of Dimmu Borgir fill in that part. Just brilliant!

Wow. My mouth completely dropped open when those opening riffs came in. I cant believe the sound of the entire album. They stepped their game up big time. Im amazed at how they've never dissapointed me on a single album yet.

They exercised ownage over Nightwish long before this great song
pantherz9103 2 years ago
Well the truth is I used to like Nightwish until they got poppy and mainstream (even Once was a little poppy even with the exception of a few songs). I liked their first 4 or so albums, but they really aren't too great anymore. At least the old stuff is still there.
But this song by Epica ranks among symphonic metal's finest songs!
