  • Daves guitar player Jim Krueger is from my town.Rest his soul. He wrote We Just Disagree.Great Guy.I have some recordings of them.

  • I love this song. My brother, 10 years older, turned me onto Dave Mason back in the 70's. Awesome music.

  • Sorry no live version...this is the best.

  • back in the day this was OUR song! whats it doing on you tube? (gimme back my 8-track please, yeah those were the days >< 'scuse me, got somehing in my eye :)

  • I saw Dave and band years ago at the Santa Monica Civic, and it was one of the best shows I've ever seen in terms of sheer musicianship. Dave is only underrated by the ignorant; you know, the kind of people who think a DJ counts as a musician...!

  • Great song. Sounds great.

They don't make music like this anymore.

  • I swear, he and Stephen Stills are illegitimate brothers.

  • Maybe this song was written for today

  • @solarman33 Very Fitting song for these times and should be played non stop at Wall Street.

  • Shit Tom Petty sure wishes he'd written this song!

  • 100% goosebumps

  • Dave Mason at his best. Still love this song 41 years later! Is that possible? 41 yrs?

  • It don't get much better! Turn it up to maximum volume and sit back music!

  • I don't get much better! Turn it up to maximum volume and sit back music!

  • ひたすらいい曲を残したね!~デイヴ・メイソン"Shouldn'tHaveTookMoreThanYouGave"~心にしむワウ・ギター、大好きな哀愁ロックマンだ!

  • Love the song, but I think Dave did a lovelier version on Traffic's "Welcome To The Canteen" live album. I found his 'wah-wah' synced in w/ the band at just the right moment... on this vers. he was just a bit off the mark. He also did a nifty guitar solo on "Canteen".

  • Don't forget Gordon and Keltner on drums

  • this song is more pertinent today than ever

  • Chris Robinson Brotherhood shut down pittsburgh last night with this SICK

  • "GREAT" song for sure.

  • Maybe the most underrated artist in rock history.

  • @bronncohowie No disrespect but in the day he was Rated. I see the comment all the time "the most underrated artist band etc... and it usually is applied to the bands and musicians/artists that were at the top of the game. By the way he is still performing and a week from this post is playing with Steve Miller on The Big Island (HAWAII). Aloha.

  • "Você tem que aprender a dar antes que você pode ter de mim" [You have to learn to give before you can take from me]

  • yeah this was one of my faves back then..with the ugliest beautiful colored vinyl- great album

  • one of these/those great records!buy i t folkies or doad it lown!

  • Wasn't this the first coloured vinyl LP? It was mainly beige-pink with flecks of red, blues, greens.Even when straight,no fooling. The music was great!

  • @RasMajnouni it was the first i ever saw. i remember i used to watch it go around and around on my older brother's old record player. i was about 5 lol!

  • God does this bring back memories. I love this album. Plan to down load all of it!

  • WIZARD- THIS IS A RNR CLASSIC- GROVE ON IT- LISTEN TO THE MESSAGE- WOW - DIG IT- HAIGHT ASHBURY 1972- LISTENING TO ALONE TOGETHER- A AMGICAL MOMENT THAT STILL EXISTS TODAY WHEN I am lucky.

    audios

  • One of the best ever

  • 1974 edison hs alex va., dm all night long. wow;. nothing since has turned any better, feeling wise.

  • Memory: Summer of 1970, Long Beach, CA. Me, a 15-year-old kid from western Nebraska who'd never heard the then-new FM "underground music" radio stations. John Rygren (sp?) played this song from ALONE TOGETHER, just released. He raved about the LP. This song stuck to me like glue--my first Dave Mason song--& I've loved Dave, the album & this song ever since. Saw him perform it at a bar in KC, MO in the 90's, told him I loved it, he thanked me & said "And it still holds true today!" Amen, Dave.

  • Great song from one of the best musicians ever. Accompanied by the best of the best of that era; many still performing today. People who weren't familiar with Leon Russell before he "came out" with Elton John last year can get a glimpse of how widespread his involvement was in the late 60's and early 70's. Mason played with D&B On Tour w EC - one clan of the big R&R family making some incredible music over in their corner.

  • ty love

  • Most disc jockeys, musicians and rock & roll enthusiasts of this era consider this one of the greatest albums of all time. Not a great commercial success but the songs stand for themselves. Dave Mason is an incredible guitarist and puts on a great live show. This album is a must listen for young folks looking to learn the true history of rock, not just the billboard crap...

  • timeless

  • I would like to dedicate this to Obama who is stealing from us the taxpayers and our children

  • Loving Dave now and before and in the future...

  • H A P P Y B I R T H D A Y Dave Mason....you were such an important part of my musical upbringing! Raising a glass to you today!

  • The live version with Traffic "Welcome to the Canteen" is awesomer

  • @crobarus Agreed! This version seems a little dull and draggy. And believe it or not, I don't really care for Dave Mason's own original version of 'Feelin' Alright', either. Sorry, but top honors for the definitive version of THAT song will forevermore belong to Joe Cocker. Mason's version simply lacks balls in comparison!

  • I like the pushy pussy.

  • saw Dave up at Harmony Festival few yrs back ....song after song all good

  • I would like to dedicate this tune to all the CEO's and politicians out there today.

  • @totaljim2 don't forget the all the zsars , emperors, Caliphs, Holy Mullahs, Royal Dynastic rulers & dictators of nations that squandered their own billions in resources for decades while their people lived in poverty levels with no jobs or hope of a better life .But get your drift of course ...

  • Is Dave the Wolfman's Brother?

  • Listening to this one over and over lately. Sure it fits for my ex-woman. But she never got it. So now I feel like dedicating it to all the greedy, soulless corporate farming giants like : ADM, Cargill, ConAgra, etc., etc., etc. What they AND their bootlicking toadie lackies have done to destroy the family farm in America should be prosecuted and recognized as a crime, a travesty, a sham, a tragedy, a blight.

  • Last I heard, the colored chip/vinyl was worth thousands.

  • dave MADE traffic

  • heard this on a radio station in houston today, just had to look it up

  • Thank you for posting, this is a classic.

  • The Source

  • Will somebody upload the version from "Welcome To The Canteen"..?

  • Shouldn't Have Took More That You Gave - Dave Mason [Worcester, England] - 1970 - "AMG Pick. ...which features the best wah-wah guitar since Eric Clapton's initial exposition on 'Tales of Brave Ulysses';... Leon Russell on piano." - Alone Together [Mobile Fidelity Sound Labs Gold CD, Original Recording Remastered]-1993. NOTE: The MoFi CD is the BEST sounding version!

  • Played the grooves off this album back then. Listen to it now and know why I did.

  • Another great one.... Brings me to places I loved as a teenager travlin the U.S- Jac Keroac style.. W/my thumm.. a soundtrack to a big adventure in how cool the USA is to a kid frm Massachusetts... Thanks for the post ceecee---VVV-Cool

  • Did anyone out there see him at Oakland Coliseum's "Day On The Green" circa 1976-77? along with Peter Frampton and Robin Trower? I took my new and very beautiful girlfriend I met at DeAnza College during summer school. thanks for uploading this song.

  • @falcon2160

no doubt a fine day Falcon. and hopefully she was fine with her thanks for an amazing day of musical magic.

    the stuff of music legends.

  • Did anyone out there see him at Oakland Coliseum's "Day On The Green" circa 1976-77? along with Peter Frampton and Robin Trower? I took my new and very beautiful girlfriend I met at DeAnza College during summer school.

  • still great

  • This man influenced me so much that my band Medicine Road is bringing back this very sound. We are all young guys, but we feel the vibe. Check us out and I guarantee you will hear the influence, as well as other geats, CSN, Beatles, Zepplin, but its all original(mostly). We are starting out good, October !st, we are playin the Don Quixote's International Music Hall! We're also bringing the Yeah yeah yeah back into the music. Peace, Love, and Music

  • I still have the Album! Chester Taft Band would play this in upstate NY - often at a bar across from what is now know as Binghamton U. Thanks for posting this!

  • I cut my musical teeth on Dave mason music, he has and will always be one of the great solo artist of the 70's, like so many other bands of that era they made music what it is, unfortunately IDOL is what we have today??? Not even close to the true masters of music, the 70's!!!!! LONG MAY IT LIVE in the hearts and minds of enlightened peoples everywhere....

  • Very Neil Young-ish

  • "Til you get to some or someone to help you live again." Yeah, that helps a little Dave, but "the dues we've got to pay are still the same." Timeless wisdom from a timeless guitar master. When it hits you that close to the center of your heart, you know it's True. From all the dispossessed husbands - now single Dad's out here, I say : Thank You Dave. Peace Life Love Light

  • I Woke Up With This Song In My Mind, Have Not Heard It In Years, I Sure LOVE Some DAVE MASON!!

  • I've never heard a wah-wah weep so beautifully. Dave Mason can make a Fender wail!

  • This song has me sobbing, I think I'm about to lose my marriage....

  • @michaellahonta

good luck dude. i went thru that a year ago. Killer pain but God got me thru it. Thot I would die a few times; hoped to die a few times, but got thru it and life is good without the crazy drama queen bitch. But it was great to play with her wonderful assets-Wow!. :D But the price was too high and the craziness was contagious.... so its good to be free. no hurry to tie up with another woman. life is calm, peaceful, and cool. hope u r doing ok.

  • @michaellahonta Hope all is well with you.

  • @aliveonbackfeed Yes, I am still married to my crazy ass wife who posted as me. I can't see her listening to this though. I'm sure it wasn't me. I still love the crap out of her, made love to her this morning. Merry Christmas.

  • @michaellahonta You have to remember to sign off LOL .Merry Christmas

  • Saw him back in the 70's. Such talent! Great Concert. God I miss this music. There were so many great bands back then. That was when music was music.

  • Like so many others, I thought this was one of the greatest albums. I still have a couple of the marble discs that I pretty much wore out. I saw him several times in the 70's and a couple of times over the last few years here in CT too. Still has a GREAT voice and guitar skills.... Indeed he IS one of the most underrated guitarists! He has good reason to be a bit upset about this lack of acknowledgment - Alone Together and It's Like You Never Left (The Lonely Ones!) are my favorite alb his.

  • Every garage band I was in from late 1970 played this song. Simple, bluesy, great for jamming, and in my key. Damn, good memories. Thanks!

  • cool.he alway plays great.thanx

  • saw him at thet art center in jersey in the 70s was great

  • Saw Dave through the wind and snow in Nebraska in 71, permanently etched.

    The Best.

  • have 3 rd row tix to see him july 24rth,2010 @ bigtop ! flip cam will also be there 2 ! coming soon my posts ..mvs784 says peace !

  • One of the MOST underrated guitar players of his time.

    Hard him recently online.

His voice is even better, imagine that!

Great lead guitar player... love this album & It's Like You Never Left.

Great stuff, kids should find this! Then they would love the 60's 70's.

  • great song...great post...thanx!!

  • Partner in my craziest years, it's like you never left... COOL DAVE

  • I remember this album well. We use to listen to it in the morning before we went to high school. That was a long time ago. Still sounds incredible. Better than a lot of that new shit that is being sold...... I know, I'm acting like an old fart right?

  • Singly, Dave Mason is one of the most under-appreciated rock artists coming out of the 60's. His creativity, song-writing, and live performance was among the best. This album NEVER gets old.

  • @dsteding : Completely.

  • Like DM says this one goes out to the I.R.S. !!!

  • @MrJojogun : I think of my ex-wife when I see the song's title.

  • @falcon2160 Roger that falcon2160...haven't thought of my exwife for years...god bless her , she gave me my freedom back.LOL! her loss my gain.

  • @falcon2160 Isn't that the truth.

  • wow this really is a treat thanx cc...

  • Dave Mason was one of the most underrated talents of the 60's. Great songwriter, singer and guitarist. What a golden time it was for fabulous music and gifted artists...I thank God I was there to hear it all...

  • @paleblue498 He's still playing.

  • Dave Mason is one of the underrated talents of 60's. A great songwriter and guitarist. and this is one of his best...

  • Absolutely one of the best Dave Mason songs ever. I can play along with it but, can't really do the solos on an acoustic and sound like Dave. Love You Dave Mason. Come to Davenport sometime and play I'll be the first in line again for a ticket "Retro Ron" on you tube. Bye now!!!!!!!!!

  • This is such a great song I'm willing to overlook the improper grammar (shouldn't have TAKEN more than you gave)

  • @vveq I think you need your hearing checked! I've listened to this version over & over, you tell me...exactly where does he say 'taken'? I can't believe you tore this apart as to go so low to make such a comment!

  • @vveq He does not sing 'taken' anywhere in this song. You obviously need your hearing checked. And you willing to over-look grammer? I'd like to see you do a better job!

  • I wore out this record.

    Dave a melody master.

Love the banjo ending. This album is a top ten of all the K-SHE type rock.

    Thanks CEE CEE

    (hey thats my cousins nick-name)

  • What a fantastic album this was. I wonder if it is well remembered today or even whether people ever heard of it.

  • Its true, they played with Joe Cocker, Derek and the Dominos, Dr. John too. An incredible time for music indeed. I love D&B too.

  • @JoyfulNoise1989 Good for you!! I work for with Delaney until he passed on '08 and still work for his label.

  • The whole album kicked, sage words then, more so now, don't take more than you give !

  • great wah wah...

    Reminds me of Pattty E...

  • Loved this when I was a kid.

The singing/playing reminds me a little of Stephen Stills.

  • @brookdalebill thats a funny comparison. I just bought this album and "stephen stills 2" yesterday and listened to them today for the first time. I saw the same connection as well.

  • children...please listen...this album was once voted THE number one record to have at a party....oh to be at one of those parties again, with music like this

  • A MASTERPIECE- thx

  • One of my favorite albums. I have the colored vinyl as well.

  • @artiebarnes: I too have an original marble colored copy of this album. It's awesome watching it spin around when I play it. More artists should have done that with their albums. I heard at one point The Beatles were considering issuing "Sgt. Pepper" like that.

  • I've been looking for this song. Thanks!

  • Play this on Wall Street.

  • Loved it then. Love it now.

  • When ,in 1970 ,Believe The Summer, This L.P. arrived ,it Just did Wonders for our Headkeepers.....BRILLIANT PIECE OF WORK ...

  • I owned this lp loved it then and as much now. Does any body know the names of the other musicians. Were there any?

  • I dont have the list but in my point of view was something like a dream team of the early seventies..some of the musicians were...leon rusell on piano, george harrison on guitar, delaney and bonnie bramlett...jim cappaldi...rita collidge...its one of my favourites all times albums and i had like you that coloured vinyl......enjoy

  • The cast of players includes: Rita Coolidge, Claudia Lennear, and Delaney & Bonnie on vocals. Jim Capaldi (Traffic) on drums, Leon Russel keyboards. Mason on guitar obviously, joined by (among others) Chris Ethridge (ISB & Flying Burrito Brothers).

Glad y'all enjoy one of my favorite artists & songs!

  • @ceeceerider Good Call

  • @ceeceerider Very good stuff I love it

  • My first concert ever! SActo. Memorial auditorium, 1973 or 74. Wanna score? lol

  • Great album. I owned one of the paisleyish- colored records. Were all the LPs that color?

  • I had that as well. I think that the original pressing was that color vinyl, but then subsequently they released it on regular black. We boys used to stare at the disc. lol But the girls thought it was ugly...

  • Check out Jimi Hendrix jamming with Dave Mason on Youtube.

  • Great album. Thanks for the song.

  • A very trippy L.P. with multi colors like an Artists palate......I have film of Dave Mason playing this song in 1972 opening for Ten Years After at the Met Center in Bloomington, Mn.

  • where's MY bong?

  • where's my bong?

  • would anybody know what might have happened between mason and winwood? they must have had some kind of falling out, cause mason was pictured on the English version of Trafic's "Mr. fantasy",but was not pictured on the American version.then mason was on Trafifc's "Last exit" and as far as I know they never worked together after that.they were SO good together.

  • It'll never match the version he did when he was with Traffic. That version had the combined genius of the Traffic members to lift it into the stratosphere. Pity there's no version of that up for people to listen to.

  • BOTH versions are great, each in its own way; as Dave says, "I know we've all got different ways, but the blues we got to pay, still the same!"

  • Fair enough. Personal tastes and so on. Thing is, most people will only get to hear one of them, presumably because Dave Mason's continuing career in the US keeps his solo version alive, while the 70s British band Traffic, which Mason was a member of for a while, isn't exactly a household name any more even in the UK, despite Steve Winwood's genius and his continuing successful solo career. They were vastly and under-appreciated even in their heyday, and now so many brilliant songs forgotten.

  • I'm also a BIG Traffic fan. It's just that "Alone Together" (Dave's first solo album) is aptly titled: he's not only showcasing his various musical talents, but, doing so in a highly intimate context - with very personal songs - as befits an individual...more so than a group. That's the difference I feel between both versions; admittedly, though: I love both! I know how you feel about Traffic: it's like they weren't 'discovered' until Steve Winwood's "Arc of the Diver" - too late - unfortunately!

  • Well put it down to my Commonwealth Rock tastes then ;). I'm not knocking Dave Mason; he's pure music. I just prefer 'that Traffic sound'.

It's a generalisation which doesn't apply to you, but many US ears seem to have a harder time tuning into C/wealth Rock than vice versa, eg Aust's top-selling band Cold Chisel flopped in US; the catchy Aussie-themed songs went right past US audiences, though they went down great in Europe. The only Aust bands to make it in US had to Americanise their music.

  • Hey - I hear, and know - all too well - what you're saying! It's like so many other things when it comes to the US and its relations with the rest of the ('outside') world.

Too many people really are like the 'American', in "Fawlty Towers", who demands/becomes enraged over the Waldorf salad; or, the Griswalds, in "European Vacation", who take it for granted that, if they just talk slowly and loudly enough, then, whatever they say will be understood by everyone in any country!

    Sad, but true!

  • Comment removed

  • BTW, I think it's, "the dues we've got to pay are still the same", rather than, "the blues we got to pay still the same". Sorry if I've ruined it for you ... :-)

  • P.S. - And then, there are others of us, who realize when we're dealing with an insincere blow-hard. You know, the kind who says, "Sorry if I've ruined it for you... :-) ", making sure to add a cute little face...to show just how sorry they really are!

The only thing that 'ruins it' for me are people, such as you, who nit-pick and proclaim to others which version is the 'vera cruz'; and, continue to go on...as if it actually matters! If this version's not good enough for you: don't listen to it!

  • Er ... I've no idea what a blow-hard is, but I'm quite sincere. There are many songs I grew up with, having misheard the words on tinny little radios through immature ears, which I later discovered the 'real' lyrics to, and wished I'd never found out the real lyrics; they spoilt the picture or story in my head which my misheard lyrics had created and there was no going back. I was hoping I hadn't just done that to you.

As for smilies I hate them but use them to clarify meaning. They do; usually

  • As for the 'Vera Cruz', i had thought that "Fair enough. Personal tastes and so on" was the end of that. I'm not sure what you're spitting the dummy about. Fwiw, I much prefer Mason's solo version of Sad and Deep as You to the full Traffic effort; there's a real, true 'sad and deep' feeling to Mason's version which never really struck me in the Traffic version. In an environment like this I should have qualified my observations on this song as purely subjective; but show me a post that isn't.

  • That's the crux of the matter: if, only, you had said you prefer Traffic's, to Dave's, version, that would have been the end of it. The reason I replied to your comment, in the first place, was because you said "It'll never match the version he did when he was with Traffic." That's a pretty absolute statement to make for something which is, and should be, subjective, ie: relative to the individual.

Actually, it's Dave's fault: if he just hadn't written it, we wouldn't be arguing now! Damn him!

  • Some of us just don't like being told things in non-debatable terms. We've had more than enough of that mentality; esp., the past 8 yrs. of the Bush administration(s)!

P.S. - A 'blow-hard' is the same thing as a 'wind-bag': someone who talks a lot, but, has nothing of substance to say, to back it up; whereas, someone who claims to be 'sorry', while smiling as they do so, is insincere.

As for the 'dues' and 'blues': when one has dues to pay, they've probably got the blues, as well... ;-(

  • It WAS a fairly ad hoc remark at the time.

Regardless (of everything else), I know first-hand (based upon numerous examples in my past) what you mean with respect to: 'tinny' radios, misheard lyrics resulting in misunderstood meanings, which - in many instances - feel more fitting and appropriate than the actual/intended ones! One ex. that comes to mind: thinking the Mamas and Papas sang "...and the only one that's getting fat is Mama's cat."; instead of, "...Mama Cass."

    (I miss that cat!)

  • P.S. - It's kind of like your remark about using "smilies". At first glance, thought you'd said "similes", which (really) threw me for a loop, since, at that moment - I couldn't recall what a simile was - thus, I was very hard-put to figure out/remember where you'd used them...!

  • P.P.S. - I think we need to become 'friends'; particularly since we've spent so much time bickering; already, it's as if we've been married for 30 years...!

  • Hopefully someone will upload it, soon! Unfortunately, Traffic's 'fate' was shared by (WAY) too many other (equally great/innovative) bands. However, as you know, they (re-)live, and are now (belatedly) accessible to 'all' on YouTube (provided 'all' have the $ for a computer and/or can access it).

My views with respect to Dave and Traffic: Dave's first 2 'solo' albums - brilliant! Then, he 'devolved' into a 'tropical party animal'. I'm thankful Traffic stayed on the high road; didn't sell out!

  • Thanks for posting this great tune from 1970. I was a junior in high school when this album came out. I dig it as much today as I did then. A true classic!

  • Great song. Thanks.

  • set my alarm for 7am to wake up for school and this song seemed to be on the radio everyday at 7am. Heard it enuf times i started listening to the words. took the msg. to heartand tried to live by it.

  • Love the guitar on this song so much.

    Thanks for posting.

  • 6 comments??....what an f in classic

  • Awesome - Thanks for posting!

  • I went to a Dave Mason concert Thanksgiving weekend here in NJ. He was awesome. I was amazed that his voice is strong as ever. Guitar licks were right on and his band was just as tight. If you have a chance to see him by all means do it.

I have his set list that was taped to the floor. I was in the front row.

  • saw mason with BOB WELCH as opener in late 70s

  • I haven't even heard Bob Welch's *name* in years. Thanks for that...throws me back.

  • Wow. I'm just finding Dave Mason here after not hearing his music since I was a kid. Cool that he's still around. And VERY cool that you have a relic from the concert you went to. Very cool. Fun!

  • LOVE IT

  • Great job! I've been waiting for someone to post this song for some time. It's Dave Mason's greatest song, as far as I'm concerned, more pertinent now than when it was first released. Some new band should play it live on Wall Street.

  • that is so true

  • ditto that!
