The amount of praise a conductor receives is directly proportional to the silliness of his facial expression, and the fluidity and grace of his movements.
I'm sure i sound stupid, but i really don't get why people give the conductor so much credit; all he seems to do is wave his wand. Shouldn't the actual orchestra be credited with playing like that? I'm not saying it's bad, the orchestra did a great job, i just don't really get it. Someone care to explain?
I think it's kinda the same as saying that an army can do just fine without the warlord.
But the passage about the facial expression was DAMN FUNNY! i totally agree. He was quite cute, though, as the curtain went down and he was throwing bouquets to women sitting in boxes next to the stage ))) in his twenties, and so much already... (sigh)
without a good conductor even a great orchestra will play in a range from poor to merely acceptable.
Anyway 80% (at least) of the job of a conductor is done during rehersal. Search for some rehersal video of great conductors. We could say that the greatness of a conductor is proportional to his uselessness during the concert performance. As for facial expressions they can be either sincere or just for the camera (but sometimes a little of both):

The greatest young italian conductor. He cames from the prestigious school of Gilberto Serembe, famous talent-scout and great conducting teacher.
This is his first russian debut. Wonderful Mascagni rich in sensuality.
Bravo Daniele, carry on in this way!!!
