  • get that shit bubby get it!, i play bass as well and play alot like you which means funky and chunky

  • i wish there was someone like you on youtube, just for saxophone. I don't play bass, but I learn a lot from just watching you and listening to you feel out the notes and try to apply that to my sax playing.

  • Cot damn. That fill at :19 gave me chills.

  • Hey Marlowe, How Did You Build Up That Technique Of Yours To Play So Fantastic & Great On Bass?

    - Big Will / The Blues Universe

  • @BigWillieWillHom Weel, I dont know, like every other musician guess, listening and learning from the greats, praciticing hard , playing the music with bands....

  • I was just telling some one how I enjoy listening to DKM play bass, because of my hearing loss being at higher levels, and I had to jump right onto YT to hear Anything from the main man! This was near top of Google's search list. that'll do for me! B¬)

  • I'm your fan, naum ta know if you understand me because I'm Brazilian, but I m your videos!

  • I like funky walks!!!

  • Love your tone mate =]

  • perfect P-sound !!!!!!

  • i love slow grooves. they are perfect for porno. hehehe

  • This one's got the 70s stank on it, well done MarloweDK!!!!! Keep laying out the funk brother.

  • I love the way P-Basses sound when slapped

  • This is what sex sounds like when you know you're doing it right!

  • how well does the p-bass play fingerstyle funk?

  • Hey, love your stuff!! im a Drummer of 10 years and would LOVE to have a funk ass jam with you brother!, only downside.. i live in australia :-( either or, love your style mate, i would only wish to play like yourself :-)

  • what a dirty face :D

  • Another option, if you can afford it, is the Mike Lull P. These have excellent playability and tone, and are lighter than the old Fenders, but run over 2K.

  • So class , how much costs a bass ?

  • £100 upwards

  • im a beginner bassist and i'm going for funk to. Nice work

  • Sahweet.

  • Hello mr. Marlowe. I curently have an Ibanez bass but I constantly get the feeling like it's too "light"... I was thinking of getting a P-BASS (squier, that is). Would you reccomend it? It's from the vintage modified series... I was also thinking of getting a JB but it's too bad that we have only 1 fender distributor in my country and oh boy are they bad with customers. I look like a kid and they won't let me try out the basses, and i've been playing for more than 3 years. What do you think?

  • I'd say go for a Jazz Bass, but that's just my opinion. And just a little advice - if you have money but not enough for an american Fender, buy a mexican instead of a Squier.

  • I have tried the jazz bass (even had one for a while) but it's weird, I find it heavy and unconfortable. I never played a P-Bass, but I've read that they're a bit lighter and with faster necks. I really don't have the money for any kind of fender (here in Chile they cost like 180% of their original price)... Maybe I could save up for a mexican fender, but I also thought of getting a Japanese squier (80's), which are very similar to american fenders.

  • Well, Fender are considered one of the best basses in the world and the Jazz even more than the precision bass. The precision bass is just as heavy if not more because of the thicker neck. They are not lighter, the body is a lil diffrent but the neck is thicker and not as fast and slim as the jazz.

Japanese Squier does not even come near the american Fender my friend. That I promise you and you can ask any bassist!

  • Yeah. I'm too skinny and it's unconfortable for me to have such a heavy bass, but I love the depht (don't know if I spelled it right) of the fender basses, the Ibanez are more confortable for me, but the sound is too light. In regards to the japanese squier basses, I'm talking about the 80's series, just when Fender bought Squier, and the replicas were almost exact. In fact, the brand in the neck was still "fender", just the squier series. Google that, early 80s japanese squiers are really good!

  • @japas Too skinny? Fuck that shit! Just buy the best sounding bass you can buy, you'll get used to the weight

  • yeah, just wanted to mentioned that the jazz bass is for fast playin' more likely than a p-bass. but p-bass sounds more badass, more...let's say sub-a-like.

you'll never get that deep boomin' sound on a jazz bass, at least never heard a jazz bass sound similar

  • Actually, go for the squier Vintage Modified series. They are VERY good basses for the money. Very well built. (and for some perspective, I've either extensively played or owned some very nice basses.)

  • Just awsome Marlowe ...Love your cool grooves . This is a great one ..

  • I usually didn't like bass 'cause I'm a guitarist... But two years ago, I discovered YOU and now, I just respect all the bassists!

Your groove is such AMAZING! In all your videos!

    Go on, please!!!!

  • That's a really hip groove!

  • Awesome licks. Love the TRUE funk emphasis on that ONE beat. Nice flares in between and back to the root groove. Love the little triplet flare at 0:16 -0:20 and 0:52 - 0:56 AWESOME!! GREAT sounding guitar too. Rocksteady P-Bass...can't beat it. This coming from a DRUMMER!! Hooked watchin your vids mate. Jamon.

  • Rhythm sounds great. I enjoyed this, thanks!

i was wondering, do u set up your bass or do u have it professionally done?

  • jaaaaaaaaa! sehr gut!

  • Comment removed

  • @Malaakov PANDORA!

  • love this man... funky shit

  • what type of amp you use (i jsut bought an aerodyne through ebay) and i was wondering that and stuff.

  • He doesnt use an amp, he uses something that channels it straight into his headphones and his computer. :P

  • You got your OWN style ;D

  • Another beautiful video Marlowe :)

I know the Jazz is the popular slapping bass but to me the P is much funkier.

  • Real Motown sound no?

  • I didnt know the fender p bass and Jazz bass sounds similar when you play the slap pop bass technique! Thats really cool...love it!

  • dude what kind of pickups are you using? are they the stock ones?

  • Is that double thumb thumping?

  • you have got flea's style ;]

  • No i dont! You need to go further back in time.

Its like saying that Porsche invented the wheel:-

  • @MarloweDK bloody spot on.

I like to watch your small vids. Its so strange. therse so manny great bassplayers from Denmark and in very different styles of music.

    Keep up the great work

  • sounds more like a marcus miller style to me...... especially with the double thumbing...... whatever it is, its a good style to have. you are making alot of bass players jealous with this standard of playing :)

  • @ludzikzpiernika

He's got the Thomas Risell style! -.-

  • @ludzikzpiernika

You don't realize it, but Marlow is a much better player than Flea! Also, as he said go back...

  • @toddgakk

The funny thing is that I posted my comment 2 years ago and now i know it's stupid =D yeah You are right. Marlow is far better player than Flea. For sure much more versatile.

  • @ludzikzpiernika no he hasnt flea doesnt do double thumping marlowe is far better then flea, not saying flea isnt good he is

  • @ludzikzpiernika it's more like flea kinda has his style.

  • I love the way slapping sounds on a P-bass. Good job.

  • pretty good. let me know when you wanna sale your bass.. ;D

  • Dude, this guy would probably NEVER sell that thing. Good luck on Ebay. X^D

  • plz plz plz could you do vid explainin how do just the first groovy bit plz cos i love that beat :p

  • nice hollow sound:)

  • He's getting that sound by slapping and most likely also using a compression effect.

  • yes i'm aware of that but thanks anyway

  • i really do want a precision like that, that is so attractive!

  • KILLER

  • hey have you tried the jazz bass? im looking forward to buying a new bass and i dont know if i should get a p-bass or a j-bass what do you recomend

  • ok thankx for the help

  • Is there a McDonald's nearby? Cause I'm loving it!

  • que bueno que suena

  • nice

  • Hey I love the way you play, just wondering are you double thumbing at around :53

  • the triplets i presume? Yes thumb down/up/index pick

  • nice man, love the way to you groove with it keep up the good work

  • fantastic video dude, you've got a real knack for that funky stuff

now this might sound like a newbish question but I'm new to the whole slap thing and was wondering just what the proper way of doing it is

  • Theres no "proper" way, which ever works for you, but basically strike with thumb, pluck with index / middle

  • did that bass get another pain job? cause it looks in great shape for how old it is

  • its not that old (76), but all original

  • i recorded ur groove with audacity and i played over it like it was a song sounded nice =P i did a solo to =P

  • Let us hear it:) (and remember the copyright)

  • Hey Marlowe,

    Great playing.

I am new to bass and know nothing about funk.

What piece of music are you playing? Do you have any advice for someone getting started how they can begin to learn this music?

    Thanks

    E

  • 1. My own music

    2. Look at my influences in my profile

  • Nice Playing, to many wantabess just slapping the bass with nothing, that's bass playing your doing.

  • p basses are the best for slap

  • That tone is badass.

  • love it... cool tight funky playing,

    nice technique!

  • nice to hear someone who's more interested in the groove than someone who's tryin to hard to be flashy.

  • very tasty man... it sounds reminiscent of the playing of Ed Friedland on a bass dvd i once saw... great playing bro.

  • this p-bass raw twang makes slap dude j-basses and music mans sound like sissies (I like 'em all, though;D)! why the funk is no one ever slapping these beasty ballsy p-basses out there ??? thank you Marlowe for showing stuff off the (often a bit boring) beaten track ! you funk man !

  • Damn straight, makes me wanna get a ash bodied maple fretboard pbass lol. I love how the high notes really sounds like Louis Johnson with George Duke.

  • It was Byron Miller with George Duke;-)

  • Oh yeah you're ace right, it's because i recently saw this 82' show with Louis Johnson and his spankin Yamaha. But yeah, all the classics, Brazillian Love affairr, Reach For It, Dukey Stick... al that shit was done by byron with his P. ;-)

  • What type of bass is that one? I like the sound, not as much as your Rickenbacker but its pretty crunchy.

  • Dirrrtyyyy! Nice playing and the bass sound groovy!

  • Just filthy! Too much funk!

  • hot stuff man thanks again
