  • Hall, shmall, let the dumb jocks have their Hall of Ego's , , the Cars were great, we know it , we appreciate it, and will always love them.

  • Saw them in concert in 1980, Great Show! One of a kind Band! Should be in the Hall by now!

  • Cars, Blondie, Talking Heads, Devo : these were the times.

  • Benjamin was so handsome here

  • listen to "down boys " by warrant. same riff, same song. ripoff. bullshit!

  • Damn they were good.

  • I wished Ben sang all of their songs.

  • looking for cars fans in chicago...lets jam....a sox fan and great person....love the CARS

  • that was tight

  • love the song but the audio sucks

  • Vintage Cars!

  • Electric ANGEL Rock N' Roller... I hear what you're playin" - - Gotta love the New England accent.. OMG..

  • I always thought that Elliot Easton looked like one of the guys from the rock band that landed on Gilligan's Island. Mainly the haircut, I think. Anyway, another effin' great song!! Gonna see them May 10 in Seattle!!

  • Just a "broken" lullaby...

  • Elliot Easton is the 2nd best left handed guitar player ever. Jimi Hendrix of course is 1

  • @golyg I can't argue with that, plus EE always plays clean and mistake-free. But I have a question: I still can't believe regular FM radio played this song back then, because I'm pretty sure Benjamin Orr is using the f-word, am I right...................? Even today they would bleep or slur that so it wouldn't sound clear, I think.

  • @67marlins i remember seeing the lyrics for this song and it showed .......were "fogging" all my energies, until your visited, but it sure sounds like the f-bomb

  • @dettigs Thanks for responding, but actually I meant where Benjamin says..."It's just a *&^*%$ alibi......", you hear what I mean......? Thanks anyways, they are a great band for sure, and every time I see EE playing, it reminds me I should get back to practicing ( I'm left-handed also ).

  • @67marlins As FocusReality says, the lyrics are "it's just a broken lullaby", not "@#($*&#($&# alibi".....

  • @67marlins He's saying just a broken lullaby, not a fuc*ing lullaby

  • @golyg: So was Tony Iommi from Black Sabbath.

  • @INDLIS Jimi Hendrix too

  • Now THAT's how a live show is done! Great vocals and NO half assed guitar or keys!

  • Man, these guys f'n rocked! SO talented!

  • R.I.P. Benjy Sorely Missed

  • The Cars had there own sound! The Cars were dynamic, eceletic, unusual, spririted.rock n roll. The Cars really were great ! RIP....... Ben ORR

  • I think that both Ben and Ric wouldn't appreciate us nobodies suggesting who was better. They were both great and very good friends. They were the perfect compliment to one another and The Cars would not have reached the heights they did without either of their contributions.

  • @xraeddie Actually thier voices were very similar. For that reason I think it's a shame Elliot chose Todd Rundgren to front The New Cars instead of Rik Ocasek. Todd totally butchers the old stuff and is a total misfit for the Cars new sound. All they really needed was a new bass player.Rik's voice was not exact but similar enough to do Ben's old songs and his own. Its surely better than Todd's.

  • ben is the best

  • The keyboard solo RULES!

  • @randomeddie Probably one of the best keyboard solos from that era!

  • @Xcorgi - I may be with you on that one. Besides, most keyboard solos from the 70s were crap ELP or Rick Wakeman wank...

  • @electricangelorr ...wow...no way!

  • I'm such an idiot, and slow, that I've never really appreciated these guys for who they are. I grew up with them, but the older I get the more I really get it. Also, I never really paid attention until very recently, AND I never even put the effort into hearing the difference between Orr's and Ocasek's delivey. I thought they were the same person! In a way I'm off the hook, right? Because, you know, I listened to them so much I always just enjoyed the "Gestalt" of the band. Am I off the hook?

  • This is a great video...well...any by The Cars are great! Definitely miss Benjamin Orr. Saw interviews with him a few months before he passed. It was just so sad...he didn't even look like the same person.

  • i seen the cars front row at the phila. spectrum 1981

  • I love Ben ,forever. RIP Benjamin.

  • brilliant!

  • Nice drumming by Robinson. They were underrated live.

  • @Twotontessie spot on. i always loved this guy's contribution to the great band that is THE CARS . love listening to candy o and concentrating on those drums. bom bom bom ps excelllent production RTB

  • Great music then and great music now THE CARS.

  • They were labelled "new wave" because it was the post disco era and they labelled anything rock as new wave. They were just a great pop rock band.

This is what I call rock music! Is it too much to ask that SOMEONE put out some good, basic, guitar driven pop where the guy isn't trying to sing like Eddie Vedder or rap or who can just sing like the late, great Ben Orr?

I listened to the new Britney Spears #1 song today and laughed. She can't sing and people buy that junk like candy.

  • Should have used the MusicMan bass on this one

  • They weren't Punk ,i would have considered them New Wave,i really thought the CARS were great!!

  • Great performance..

  • Benjamin is just TOO Sexy in this!

  • @ladybluluv he's always too damned sexy lol and i'm a red-blooded heterosexual male.

  • @yooanoozarrmay yes, ALWAYS : )

  • I did not know that Ben Orr passed away. I am a Big Cars fan. May Peace Be Upon Ben Orr.

  • Ben Orr--great voice, great vocalist, RIP. I heard some interviews with him during his solo years and when the band came together again shortly before his death, and he came across as very smart and kind. The warmth and kindness surprised me a little, because his stage persona sometimes seems cool to the point of cold. He must have been great to work with. What a tragedy he left us way too soon.

  • really like the old school live stuffs!

  • I will keep going on about this band. That's how good they were/are.

  • i hear what you're playing. Man I love the CARS, reminds me of my youth, these songs mean so mcuh! I love them!

  • I like his bass guitar design. I like all the ones I've ever seen him play. To each there own and their opinions. He looked cool playing everything he played and he made everything he played look cool.

  • I love this song, and I think this band has a place in pop history, but damn that is one ugly bass guitar!

  • Are you a guitar player? I respect your opinion but, for what it's worth, I think this is a beautiful design - seen it before but Ben Orr had one of the nicest ones that was actually played (and not for novelty's sake). Really? Man, it's sexy as hell and looks really well-balanced. R.I.P. Ben - you should be in the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame (certainly ahead of ABBA, Madonna and Chic). Why not just create two wings at the HOF? One for Rock, one for Pop and make everyone happy!

  • @whipsmartchris Ya Iv'e been playing rythym for Twenty six years, and I guess we agree to disagree. I agree wholeheartedly about Ben's talent, but I'm just not down with that design.

  • @Tacomadome24 That's what makes the world go 'round, right? What's your all-time favorite guitar (from a design standpoint)???

  • They were ahead of their time for 1978. And they pulled off that groove and those guitar riffs perfectly at the end of the song. Look at the audience right after they finish. It almost seems out of place. Like this band should have come out in the nineties. Their sound was that innovative.

  • Ocasek is such a freaky mantis. Elliot is the MAN !

  • The music of the Cars got this Indiana boy thru many a teenager day during the early to mid 1980's...RIP Ben Orr, your voice and vibe was just too cool and inspiring! The Cars are dead...Long Live The Cars!!!!

  • Look at Greg 2:09... damn this was just a good BAND.

  • @spaceorbison you know they cant pop out good songs the way the cars did and i dont think anybody will come cloise again they rocked a generation and still do

  • Beautiful music! I prefer to hear Ben's voice over Rick's.

  • Wow...this is an awesome track from 1978!!

  • Ben went to high school in Cleveland Ohio

  • Greg Hawkes is one of the best keyboardists ever! !!!!

  • This band has no weaknesses

  • He looks and sounds too good! it's almost too hard for me to look at him. A sweet handsome prince.....looking so yummy in those leather pants too.. Oh, my poor heart..

  • The cars kick ass! What a true American band...

  • why is ric so famous all he did was play guitar back then he didnt even sing back up. Was he an original member? He Doesnt act like he was.

  • @Ronbodog Rick and Ben were THE original members..they performed as a duo in the early stage...Rick sings half their hits in the Cars.

  • @Ronbodog He wrote all the songs. And he did sing lead on a fair number of songs.

  • This is so smokin! I only wish it were louder.

  • its so sad benjamin orr died :( he had a great voice.

  • Ben fits so perfectly with the Cars sound

  • Benjamin was so cool, great player!!!!!!

  • mustache brigade in the front row

  • Completely relevent and totally enjoyable. In other words: timeless. Thanks again.

  • I envy everyone that got to sleep with that bass player!

  • No, thank YOU, Ben.

  • what kind of bass is that?

  • Vox Constellation IV Bass

  • Ben's voice was so dreamy and so was he

  • Outstanding live performance!

  • Derrick would love that bass Ben is playing.

  • Ben is always hot! and i love to hear him sing!

  • new moon

  • They were the only 'new wave' type band I ever liked. I never really thought of them as new wave and definitely not punk. I just thought of them as rock. I think they sort of had their own category all to themselves. They had a unique mix of a bunch of things. Whatever they were, they were AWESOME!!

  • agreed...although i definatly hear some of their influence in bands like the fountains of wayne

  • @lerxt42 I saw fountains of wayne 'live' in concert once, before i heard most of their music. they never made me even think of the cars, but afterward, I read that many people hear it. I've been a huge fan of the cars for years, but I just don't hear it. I liked much of fountains of wayne's music 'live' other than Stacy's mom. They were really good and I got into it that night, but to me they just don't sound anything like the cars, but they could've have been influenced in some way by them.

  • @ladybluluv ya i agree they got there own thing

  • @ladybluluv

Especially they are unique in the singing style, I think=)

  • @ladybluluv - I considered them 'modern rock' rather than new wave. Or we could just go with the obvious and call them, as you say, AWESOME!

  • @ladybluluv they may of had a new wave "sensibility" but musically the were more power-pop/rock and had a lot of awesome.

  • Such a great band, but they did succeed despite themselves. They had a strong rock element (Easton and Robinson) along with an equally strong techno-music element (Hawkes and Ocasek) with Ben Orr right in the middle tying it all together. A pretty divisive group dynamic but they sure made it work great!! My favorite, by far, of all the New Wave bands.

  • High school memories. Back then it was a cassett and now still a favorite. Some bands pass the test of time.I think the cars did.For me anyways.I think that makes them a great band. They were a great band. Luv this song.

  • He was such a looker....and charming. He looks like a prince here....mmmmm

  • They had SO many great songs, it would be hard to pick a favorite, but this has to be one of them for me.

  • 30+ years later, and this song still rocks! Rock on!

  • Orr's vocal is similar to his influence Paul Macartney, and Ric has a quirky style

similar to his influence Buddy Holly

  • Ben was hot!

  • The Cars carved a unique niche within the New Wave Genre. . Ben Orr was sooooo Gifted & unsung. Sorely Missed. RIP Benny!

  • This here is your basic combination of Beatles, Byrds, Jefferson Airplane, Hendrix, Zappa, hints of new wave and miscellaneous rock 'n roll all rolled up in one. Oh yes, and amazing guitar and vocals. Other than that, just your average white band. ; )

  • The Cars were One of those Groups, That had so Many Hits it was hard to Decide which One of them was the Best.

  • We're not worthy! We're not worthy! ;o)

One of the best, no question.

  • One of Boston's greatest ever bands. One of America's best ever too.

  • KILLER.

    Love Ben's VOX bass too.

  • BEN...Missing you brother!

    Plays a bass with a pick....hardcore.

    Hats off.

  • loveee this song<3

  • benj has a better voice than rick

  • @sw2ohio: with The Cars, it was never about who sung better,,,both singers in this band are great!! And they both loved each other's style, as friend's, and band mates. they traded vocals a lot , and it had people confused for a long time.. but it worked so well it made them who they are. I love The Cars, and both Ric and Ben are awesome as singers.... r.i.p. Ben :)

  • @sw2ohio

I agree, they werent punk< i never cared for punk or new wave...I was into the hard rockers including ac/dc, ratt, dokken, white lion, led zep, ozzy...although The Cars have nothing alike as those hard rock bands, they still fit into my top bands as those, because they rocked! it is rock, good electric guitar, solid drums, and a good rythm bass...and one of a kind vocals...check out Cheap Trick, another awesome rock band that got thrown into the same bandwagon with The Cars...

  • @sw2ohio Yes, Rick is or was. very aware of that fact.

  • @sw2ohio Agree but I always think of Rick when I hear a Cars song. He was the face of the band.

  • @sw2ohio

    and that's a fact!

  • I can't figure out why they got labled "New Wave." They were just a really good rock band.

  • That's because every dumb ass was listening to the Village People. This music still good today and where are the Village People today? Hanging Out at the Stud on Harrison St ....

  • Here in Houston, at least for suburbanites like myself, in high school all we listened to was Van Halen and the Rolling Stones. When The Cars debuted in 1978 they were completely different from anything else we had heard. Of course the really COOL kids in my high school were already listening to Joy Division and the Sex Pistols by that time... but the Cars were still pretty different for us.

  • they were just the "rock" section of the New Wave movement New Wave was a movement, not a Genre. It was Anti-Disco, Anti-Hippy

  • That's funny, JerryMopar, I just had someone tell me yesterday on an article about Iggy Pop making it into the RRHOF that The Cars weren't a "rock" band.

  • Their voices are nothing alike; Ben's voice is melodic and has a rich tone, Ric's is quirky and flat sometimes!

  • @katie180574 Yeah they are'nt much alike in voice, but I always can tell which songs were the Cars songs. I seemed to like Ben on voice better then Ric, but the Ric songs were good too.

  • @1980TheShining Yeah, totally agree!! Ben and Ric always seemed to sing solo on the songs which suited their voices. Much prefer Ben's vocals, yet one of my fave Cars songs is 'Heartbeat City', sung by Ric. The Cars have an individual sound so much that as soon as you hear the start of one of their songs, you know it's them! Awesome....:-)

  • I've never thought their voices were similar. I think some people just have a better ear than others. Ric is on record as saying they aren't similar as well.

  • Anybdy who think Ben+Ric hv similar voice, check LIVE videos. Pls tell me if u could find one sounds similar. Easy comparison="it´s not the night live" Only live 2 shared vocals in Youtube.

Many effects are used for studioversions of Ric´s vocal. I heard Roy Thomas Baker (producer 1-4 Albums), add Ben´s voice on Ric´s vocal to make it sound better

Ric knows limitation of his voice + sing capabilities. He sang only easy song + rather "speak" in stead of singing in all difficult part

  • I have never had any problem distinguishing between Ric and Ben's voices...Ben had a much more smooth and melodic voice, Ric's was quirky and off key! However, Ben had the ability to make his voice quite quirky .....

  • Bitchin'!

  • To me....they were the perfect combo of rock and new wave.

  • OK, another one that Benn sang. I always thought this was Ric. Man, they have interchangable voices.

  • Yeah, I don't get that. They don't sound similar at all to me. I could tell the difference even back in the 70's.

Ben's voice is the one that brought my attention to The Cars.

  • Their first two albums were unreal. I listened to them non-stop from '79 to '81.

But back in those days, they had a reputation for being not great live.

Never saw them. But man, their early work was tops!

  • I saw the Cars in London Ontario when I was just 16. The played a hockey arena and they were GREAT live. It help that by the time they played Moving in Stereo I was stones outta my gourd (as we used to say).

  • Fair enough. But drugs and The Cars were not a great mix for me.

  • Love the Vox style Bass Benjamin has here!

  • Looks like Ric's chewing gum got stuck in his dentures!

  • what's the deal!? Ric's not singing a single note!!!!! Never new that DIDN'T sing this :( Still good though

  • Drop dead awesome memories of the most formative of my life...Cars rule.

  • damn good

  • one of a kind tina

  • awesome riffs, awesome synth, awesome lyrics, awesome melody, awesome awesome awesome.....

The pop stars don't have one-tenth the talent and originality of The Cars.

  • "Electric angel rockin' rolla, I hear what you're playin'"

    Awesome song, man!

  • Fantastic live version. I've said it before, I'll say it again: performers who can reproduce their studio sound in a live environment are incredibly talented and impress the hell out of me.

  • See our video page for most CARS and ORR related video. Also see on how to join our private by invitaton only group to Ben Orr!

  • Still relevant today

  • No one does leather pants like Ben!

  • haha, I was thinking the exact same thing!

  • He did great things for tight leather, lucky cow it was whose hide wrapped around those legs and ass

  • GREAT SONG!

  • excelente!!!!!

  • Could anyone send me this song ?

  • The Cars first album was one of my first (I'm 40 & from Boston). They dominated the radio in those days. I kind of stopped liking them after Panarama. But like every song on that first album, 'Bye Bye Love' is an absolute classic.

  • Even though I'm 16 (Young) I love their music. Weird cuz this is from so long ago.

  • Comment removed

  • He might get mad if he reads this, but Elliot looks like Nigel from Spinal Tap!

  • elliot easton an awesome player.

  • One of the best. They don't make music like that anymore.

  • Wow, that bass player is gorgeous. He's got a great voice, too.

  • What year did he die?

  • 2000 He sang most of their hits. I saw him here at a festival in Tarentum pa just a few months b4 dying...he looked good like he was hitting the weights. Played rythm guitar and sang ALL of the Cars hits, had the entire festival rocking! I wonder if he knew that he was terminal then I think in July and he died in October I believe

  • He found out in late-May I believe. Amazing man.

  • 2000

  • I didn't realize Benjamen Orr did the vocals on this. For some reason I thought he sang "Who's going to take me home" and that was it. I remember thinking back in the day, "How come that guy doesn't sing more?"

Pretty funny, everyone is sitting at tables and boppen in there seats. I guess with tables in the way its hard to do stage dives. :-)

    Thanks for posting this. D.

  • he sang most of the hits , and he did pit out a solo cd before he died , it,s called, " the lace" it,s very good , and had a top 40 or even 10 , im not sure with "stay the night"

  • I just got this DVD (Musicladen live) and watched it today. It rocks and is a must for any Cars fan. The interview on it was really fantastic, very insiteful. It was so sad seeing Benjamin so thin and sick tho, it broke my heart to watch it. RIP dear Benjamin and thank you for a shitload of fantastic music!

  • Ben reminds me of Brian Jones with that teardrop base.

  • Dude...that makes us old in comparison to kids these days. I was one of the younger kids when this came out. One positive side: people don't know how to produce this kind of music anymore today, and a few of us might actually know what a 'turnaround' is in the old pop sense.

  • Wow it sure has been a while. You're right I got the actor's names wrong. but I said moving in stereo came after this song on the album.

  • On the album this came off of this song was followed by the Spank Song from Fast Times "Moving in Stereo". Boy is that scary that I know that. Glad I was there when this ruled the airwaves.

  • 777, What do you mean, "Spank song"?

  • If you saw Fast Times at Ridgemont high it was where Judd Hersh was spanking to Katie Holmes while this song played.
