@paxandrews, i bought a 6ct., 4.75 lightning ridge black opal for my father to give my mother for their 50th. it's a beautiful stone, a classic purple-blue-green-amber with a red-orange rolling flash.
i recently saw some welo crystal, black, caramel and clear, cut and rough. it's in a class of its own. you have to see it to believe it. as one guy said, "how do you turn it off? where's the light switch?"
the colors flash against your skin like a disco light as you roll it between your fingers.
I cut Ethiopian opals as well and I can tell you that they would not be easy to be forged well, although I have had people say that they cant tell the difference between antique glass opals and the real thing
