You're bypassing the pull beneath the seam . The stitch that you're attempting to do is called a "Hidden Stitch". In order for this job to be done the seat should have be taken apart and done on a sewing machine. You can clearly see when you avoided the pull and it looks flat. It would probably looked better if you used duck tape.
