Chrome OS is a bit pointless in my opinion if you can make a thin, quick & light laptop (my idea of the point of a cloud OS) like the new MacBook air with a physical HDD. I know the hard drive is small enough but they will easily be able to fit much bigger ones in the near future. As for desktops who cares if it is large or heavy if you're not going to be moving it much, you might aswell have a big powerful one.

I do want to store thing and MY hdd, use programs i download or buy. And for sure i don't want to watch ads while using OS or specific programs. Office 10 starter looks more or less like Ad-supported program but it's done not bad. I hope it wont get worse.

Isn't cloud a variation of Mainframe computing. I just got one thing to say. There is a reason why we left the Mainframe system. ISP are having suck attack about the internet traffic it takes for torrent I cannot even imagine the net volume of a cloud system. Cloud will be good for those Internet TV like system but I think it's a dead duck.

i agree with you lack78. Most of the people are commenting saying that you're being paranoid. It obviously wont be instantaneous to the extent you speak of but gradually it will come to too much reliance on the 'cloud', and i think it's a very bad thing. not just for the loss of true enthusiasts but also for the scope of intrusion to peoples personal data.

I think your interpretation is wrong, and paranoid. I think the whole idea of this 'cloud' is for smaller, weaker devices like pocket tablets and phones, and even then just for linking information. I mean just look at the size of an OS, vista is 7 gigs, you tell me everytime I turn on my computer it has to download vista? Impossible, so the OS will always be on my pc, just like the programs, then what exactly is this cloud crap? Whatever doesn't make sense, is not true

you don't get it do you? There will be no Microsoft "Windows" Google Chrome is the OS, that's all. Your computer is nothing but a link to Google server. Google's server does all the work our computers used to do so that we just get a pretty end result. This also means that Google has accesses to all our data and that we can not use our computers at all if we are not able to connect to the internet for whatever reason.

i see your point entirley, i dont think its ignorance, i just think its technology -wise we've gone up a gear, yes it taken for granted in the social networking side of things but people are just using whats there at their disposal. Its a situation that uncontrolable and completly out of our hands :)

I'm very tech minded. I own a netbook and juggle about 3 OSes on it. All i use it for is internet pretty much (although i can't get on the web in leopard yet). But I can say that i don't like the idea of cloud computing. If for any reason, you are not connected to the net, then you basically don't have a computer until you're connected again

And if you need the cloud to connect, they can charge you anything they want. Now, if you find free wifi, the internet is free. But if you did not have a computer with its own programs, it would be useless without a connection to the cloud, and it would cost you

totally agree but so long as it's optional then I will stick with doing things the way I always have I like it that way as do most. I enjoy my games and use steam which has a social side to it but mostly friends. As for all this other tut out there it will die out I think it's just a fad they will get bored and move onto the next big thing.

Is it just me or does this "cloud computing" thing just seem like part of the New World Order? I mean Facebook sells information to the government and so can Google. Just think about it, Google will have the power to sell our information to the Government and probably will. This means our privacy will be gone. Maybe that's their agenda.. Cloud-based operating and computing systems are quite possible in the future. My opinion is that while we have so bad internet coverage on our planet, and where we actually do have it, it is simply not enough for the practical use of that system. And it won't happen tomorrow, nor next year, nor next decade. This whole concept, however, can exist as a browser-based OS such as chromium on netbooks and handheld devices. But I really doubt it will ever supplant the present way of computing.

I'm sorry but the idea of cloud computing makes me cringe. I like the way computers are now. Computers have developed to a very useful universal tool that I don't really think should be changed. I like the idea of being able to unplug your computer from the internet and still have use of it. Also, my last thought on this is that I want my information to be stored on a place were I have total control over it I don't want it stored on a server somewhere in cyber space.

I liek the idea of an OS account saving your files and not it on your hard drive. It takes away all fear of a crash and doesn't slow down your computer. But that's the only thing I like from the Chrome Operating System.

Well, I'm 14 and I do not want a cloud based OS... Among other reasons I'm not always connected to the internet, so when i'm offline, is my computer useless? I think if there is demand for Computers like we have now, they will be made for quite a while to come, because if people want it, people buy it, and companies essentially make money! The Ad-supported OS sounds terrible, I couldn't imagine apple doing something as 'tacky' as that, we'll have to see!

i would rather spend $200 0n an OS..then have a free ad-based OS...i love the cloud for backing up certain information..like pictures..I have all of my pictures backed up on facebook..but I would never want to rely on my internet connection to determine how fast the software on my computer runs, nor would i want to save important information on the cloud..bank statements etc..I still print all of that stuff out, I dont even trust my computer to keep it safe..I will never choose a cloud OS..

I dont believe computers will go 100% "Cloud" but i can see most apps going that way. about the add-OS, i dont know i can see that really happening cuz corporations want money more then they wany to make us happy! it really is an unsure future of computing! I've been thinking about this stuff a lot lately. It seems like the industry is driving to have more control over our habits. Our privacy seems to be ever dwindling. I know chromium is still being develop but after testing it in a virtual machine I found even with the "fastest" internet available in where I live it is still way to slow for cloud computing.

basically I don't want anything to do with cloud computing.

cloud computinng is a terrible way to go in my opinion, they cant very well move totally into that direction i would personally not feel secure using it i would much prefere to store my files on my hardware and not on some cyber space network, it seems good for someone who just wants to do basic email and browsing but thats it..

It will never happen, no one wants to trust the internet to store their data. And how soon we forget that the majority of computer users worldwide don't have anything more than phone line access to the internet, who will want to spend hours downloading files you already own?

If cloud computing comes, it will be only for internet access. And applications online? Who is going to build this super server that will allow 6 billion users to edit video at the same time?

They need to have 4g almost everywhere and built into every computer before this could work

I also can't imagine it ever working in the US because we would not put up with it. I don't know many people who would feel comfortable with having their family photos in the 'cloud'. My guess is the cloud would be hackable, and will never be able to handle the work load. Even now, youtube slows down just providing us with low res videos, imagine if they were also suppling us with our OS, it can't work. download speeds can barely handle streaming video, how can it handle streaming OS's?
