  • This is truly the most loveliest version I have ever heard him sing. When he sings, I can smell the ocean breezes . He can rest knowing he gave so much of himself in such a beautiful way. People spend a lifetime trying to leave something beautiful behind, Glen Campbell did so for many years with ease and graciousness, I will enjoy it and wish him love and support.

  • This particular version of this song is my all-time fave Glen tune. Discovered this version just befor my Mom died so it will remain forever synonymous with that.

  • jnot the best version of this song but that is maybe great haircut of all time.

  • love all his songs,,,sweet man...

  • I miss the guitar,but God I love him!

  • Glen Campbell has one of the all time great voices. Good luck in his battle with all timers.

  • This song always brings tears to my eyes. I remember sitting with my Daddy as he told me of the music he listened to while he was away in Vietnam and "Galveston" was among one of his favorite songs.

  • Makes me ache with sad longing. I can feel the salt air spraying my skin when he sings. What lyrics, voice and style. Magic!

  • This is one version I loved to listen to. So nice.

  • Wonderful

  • now thats real talent

  • P.S. the songwrite had the Spanish-American war in mind when this was written. But as we all know, we can intrepret in any way that works for ourselves =)

  • OMG those wide lapels, "long" hair...; just what were we thinking in those days?!

Glen, thanks for being a part of my life ~ my family will always be cheering for you.

  • he is a great talent, the drinking finally got him but he is one of the best ever.

  • The last of his kind>>>Lovely~

  • This is so beautiful, and sad, I can see the guy in Vietnam, terrified, wanting to come back to his girlfriend and his home, probably where he grew up. It makes me cry. Just opens my heart right up.

  • Such a master at his craft and wonderful human being. So sorry about your Alzheimers. God bless you Glen..

  • thank you glen cambell, for touching our souls, with your talent. gods speed.

  • What? I'm in pieces! Who wouldn't love this version and his unbelievable command and vocal gravitas. It doesn't get any better.

  • Fantastic performance of a great song

  • Back then if you were milatary you knew! It was an anthem for many of us that served!

  • @jbeng1953 Thank you forever for your service. I'm so sorry you had to go through such a rough time in this country's history. That was a terrible war, but the way the US treated the soldiers coming home was just as terrible.

I honor you and your compatriots sir.

  • @tptvox Where you been the last 200 years? USA has never treats its troop with anything resembling respect.. Our vets have had to fight for every 'benefit' they have ever received. After all, we hanged the Bonus Boys on Penn. Avenue for daring to ask for their promised money early. My simplified answer; lets give all our returning vets a Gold Card when they come back home,,Gold Card is good for all the gas that they care to buy, forever. Let them sell it if they want. No ?'s asked.

  • Jimmy Webb, Burt Bacharach, Brian Wilson, Lennon and McCartney....just to name a few......some pretty good songwriting in the 60's!!!!!

  • @ablestar88 SO TRUE, ablestar88!

  • A top notch song. Brings back memories of my youth. Wish I could go back.

  • a perfect performance in every way , no one esle could ever come close to this

  • Love this version , shows the writer and singer at their best. Nothing can match.

  • Jimmy Webb is a peerless songwriter with many an admirer from Glen Campbell to Harry Nilsson to fans such as myself...

  • The writer (Webb) of this song said it wasn't about Vietnam, but about the Spanish-American War of 1898, when Galveston was a major city (before the Storm of 1900 destroyed it). But it could be applicable to any war if one wants it to be.

  • Hey captkronoscorvinus You are right on!!You said it perfectly.I'm not an ex marine but I'd gladly go so my nieces and nephews don't . But only for a legit purpose or

reason., not the bulshit the knuckleheads keep getting us into.Screw the chicken hawks. ...and to all others a good night.

  • Absolutely love this ballad version!

    Thanks,

  • Chills..........

  • Freedom is always just one generation away from extinction. Eternal vigilance is the price that must be paid for our great nation to remain free.

  • IT IS AN ANTI-WAR SONG!!! GOD DAMN LISTEN TO THE LYRICS.

By the way, if your a HUMAN BEING, then your Anti-War.

Or do you want your son, daughter, grandson or grand daughter to die in a conflict 4000 miles from their home. If freedom is in such a state of danger, then I'm 52 and you just tell me where I need to go, I'm an ex Marine and I will sure as fuck die for my country before my Grandson does!!!!!!

  • My prayers and thanks to all those who served in the armed forces, giving up family and friends to defend me . I have what I have because your bravery has given it to me. I am always grateful.

  • This is "OK" but I like the "original" way he sang this song a lot better. It is a bittersweet story for sure. Being a Veteran I appreciate these lyrics. I have been there...

  • @TinStar188 This is actually the original way that Jimmy Webb sang the song. When Glenn first heard it - Jimmy was performing it slowly. Glenn felt like the song would be better sped up and was a natural with what was going on in the Vietnam war. The rest is musical history.

  • THIS SONG IS A MUST LISTEN FOR ALL THOSE MISSING THEIR LOVED ONES ESPECIALLY IN THE MILITARY. QUITE TOUCHING

  • what a pure voice...it goes right through you

  • "I am so afraid of dying, before I dry the tears she's crying". Just beautiful.

  • Slow version of Galveston - gorgeous!!! (oh, and nice 70s haircut there, Glen!!!)

  • thanks for sharing~~~

I love Glen Campbell singing this song in any way he does~~~

  • What a wonderful talent.

  • 1969, IA, waiting for my draft notice, still makes me cry.

  • @brainerdrebel Philip Caputo namechecked this tune in his book "A rumour of war" about his time before and during Vietnam as a 2nd LT with the Marine Corp. Poignant indeed.

  • bluebirdGuitar. I saw him sing this arrangement. Ive looked for this version for so long . My 38 yaer old son was named after him Ive seen him many times since but have been disappointed . I thik he also did Charley riches most beautifull girl in the world at the same concert . wonderfull

  • I have always and always will love Mr. Glen Campbell. We aALL make mistakes in life but it does not mean that he was a Great Performer and still is.

  • He looks somewhat like Cliff Richard from a distance. Especially the hair and style of clothes do it.

  • Great version! I use to lay in front of the record player and listen to his music and wish I had his hair (mine's curly).

  • Beautiful version of his classic song. Sung with much emotion and style.

  • Wow! Never heard this one...

  • @xzz0195 welcome to good country music. glad you found it. check out all of glen's earlier music.

  • What a spell-binder that man was!!! He doesn't just sing - he weaves a web of story-telling, and does is SO well :-+). Splendidly mellow voice also.... the complete package.

  • Kevin Bacon would do a great job and never thought about it but he does have that look ... nice catch !

  • what do you think of kevin bacon playing glen in a movie ?? kevin plays right ??

  • eh kevin wouldnt be kosher

  • Is this footage of Glen's concert at Royal Albert Hall in London or perhaps the Londone Palladium?

Anyone want to take a guess at what year this was and how old Glen was here?

  • 75 or so

  • This was taped at he Royal Festival Hall in London on the nights of April 21-22. Glen's birthday in on April 22 so, to answer your last question, he was 40 yours old for the first show and 41 for the second! ;-)

  • Very pretty version of this song...loved it!

  • Glen is one of a kind, and still gives a great performance! He's truly a Hall of Famer, the likes of which will not be found again... Great clip! Thanks!

  • i play guitar partly because of him....

    not like him....but i try......

he was and still is a hero of mine!

    love the tempo of this!

  • with all his talent he shoulda been bigger than Elvis. management problems?Self destructive tendencies? This man should be in the Hall of Fame of Hall of Fames, and where does he play? Branson and gigs like that, it jist aint right! Awesome talent, nonetheless. Timeless, someone said, I agree.

  • @joeruffin1:

    What's wrong with Branson?

  • Just for fun try to take the route Gle takes from 2:30-2:36 to the word sun..

  • Simply a great version of a classic song

  • haha..get a haircut you dam hippy...and before anyone blows a cork...thats good natured humor..its a dig at the times and the style of his cut..

  • i believe this song was released during the viet nam war

  • yes it was & I remember it well, I was in the draft age period but had a college deferment.......God Bless all those that fought but never came back and also those that came back but were not treated with respect from others........

  • @pkappel006 true that

  • @pkappel006 HEAR U FRIEND

  • @bigadda1969 back in the 60's, you did not have computers, no cell phones, no I phones, no notebook computers

gas was 35 cents per gallon, and their were only 5/6 local TV stations per major city in the usa. no such thing as cable or direct TV. you lived life as is and hoped you would not be drafted and be sent to Vietnam to fight

  • @pkappel006 wow.....you took the words right out of my mouth

  • Heard both theories, Spanish-American & Viet Nam wars. Two things that are accurate, Webb's songwriting, and Campbell's vocals. Both are excellent.

  • Never heard this slowed version before. Th evocal nuances, especially in the 1st verse are stunning. Glen takes such understandable pride in his guitar virtuosity that his immense vocal skills are asily overlooked.

  • Brilliant point about Glen's vocals, amply displayed in this beautiful rendition. Heavenly!

  • Ifc....I agree also with the 2 comments......how could anyone not like his voice with ANY of his tunes....just sit back and relax and take it from their

  • I believe that this is during the spanish american war. He left his young woman in Galveston and said his last goodbye to her before leaving to war. He and she knew that he would never come by and he was ultimately killed during the spanish american war by cannons, which did eventually sink the USS Maine in the spanish american war. Cleaning his gun and thinking about his love and Galveston and wishing he was there and not in war. She was left behind as he never did return.

  • Love this version. Much slower and poignant than the hit single version. This is closer to Jimmy Webb's interpretation.

  • the best version..so slow..so great...glen is still UNREAL!

  • In my mind, the song is set during the civil war, but the longing and fear of dying before seeing again the ones he loves... timeless. All the things about Galveston reminds him of her.

  • This brings back the chills of waiting to be drafted.

  • But tell me is the place worth singin about or what?

  • Hahahah nah man.

  • The girl in the place is worth singin about

  • we are moving back to houston june 1st cant wait to go to galveston!

  • beautiful music/picture. anyone knows what year this picture was taken of Glen??? And wear the music was played??? I have to say, the man has put his heart/soul into this video as he does with all his other tunes.....this person sure gets it............

  • believe it was filmed at the Royal Festival Hall in London in 1977

  • thanks partner, enjoy the listening of his music..........PK Man

  • great song

  • another classic.

  • this isnt a song about galveston as much as it is a song about a young man who could be from anywhere who will miss his hometown and his loved ones when he's away in the military. and please realize that the military wasnt volunteer when our fathers and brothers fought and died there

  • Its asong about love even grows in war and beein g homesick to the countryside and the people you love and left behind.

america is still going the same way,so try to make it bether.vote, scream, and never forget vour heroes.

  • Very well put. When I listen it, it's 1969 again and I'm waiting for my draft notice to arrive. Chilling how music brings things back. Mike

  • When I listen, it's 1969 and the cannons are firing on the other side of the hill I was bunking on...as you suggested, how odd that such a beautiful song can bring back the chills, real and hard to forget.

  • Those were the years. Where did the last 40 go? Just before I got drafted I remember friends getting ready to go to a concert at a place called Woodstock. The summer of 69, Ted Kennedy couldn't kept the Oldsmobile on the bridge and Charlie Manson did the murders, Man on the Moon.

  • we all get old my friend..keep the memories in your heart...peace be with you

  • @lilgroff22 Agree. Galveston isn't like Waikiki Honolulu but it's still a great place. Home is where you make it. If it's Mineola, TX and that's where your grandma lives and fixes you the best breakfast you ever have, then that's your place. God bless all the kids serving their country in the military right now. Return home soon whether it's to Mineola, TX, Galveston or wherever.

  • @lilgroff22 Amen.

    Peace.

    Rock

  • @lilgroff22 soooo TRUE! Bravo!

  • did he have it or what!

he could play rings around ANYONE, sing like a bird, handsome..and then he meet tanya

  • memories from galveston texas;I WAS THERE IN THE 70S BEAUTIFUL PLACE TO BE

  • I would love to buy this dvd. Can you tell me where I might find it? I've been searching online and have not been able to find a copy in the USA.

    Thanks for posting these videos!

  • Great song writing, I can feel the sea breeze! Thanks!

  • My comment below re-posted - this time without the typos!

Glen would get arrested for having a hairstyle like that today! Nevermind, this is a brilliant song and Mr Campbell has a fantastic voice. Nice to hear this 'slowed-down' arrangement.

  • Ha ha. Although there are some people who should be arrested for the hairstyles they've got! This was a little before my time but I really love this song. Evokes strong images and strong emotions.

  • yea at least he has hair lol

  • Glen would get arrested for having a hairstle like that today! Nevermind, this is a brilliant song and Mr Campbell has a fatastic voice. Noice to hear this 'slowed-down' arrangement.

  • This is completely nuts, but when I was a little boy and I used to play this over and over, I thought Galveston was the name of the girl. In fact, I used to think if I had a little girl I would name her Galveston, after this song. Sound stupid? Unbelievably classic song, and fantabulous arrangment. Praise Jimmy Webb!!!!

  • captain, i used to think the same thing !! lol i'm sure we're not alone. i was in galveston for biz ten years ago and made sure i bought the CD before i went so i could listen to it when i was there. awesome song !!

  • Words simply can't describe just how pretty is this version of "Galveston." Wow.

  • I have been looking for this version of Galveston for FOREVER! Thanks so much!

  • This version is beautiful!

  • great version! *****

  • God bless Galveston.

  • this is one of the best versions of this song I have found online... thanks for the upload. Awesome!

  • Racist. Obama still made it so I believe there is hope for this country!

  • It must feel bad to be so scared. Like the dinosaurs.

  • so many memories thank you glen campbell with nice soft music

  • oh Galveston.

  • this just in, Galveston is dead. Gone, completely wiped out. Now if we could just get rid of the wiggers who keep buying rap.

  • She is not waiting there today with IKE about to scoop her up....

  • My prayers go out to everyone in Galveston today.

  • Coinciding neatly with with Vietnam, the songs` sadness is heartfelt.

  • wow.

    He's like, amost sober.

  • Dig the crazy pageboy hair cut. I believe this arrangement is similar to the version Jimmy Webb did for himself. Great singing. Dude can play great axe, too. My guess this was perhaps mid to late 70s before Glen went south with booze and coke and hung out with that bimbo country singer Tanya Tucker. It's amazing he's still alive!

  • I'd like to take this oppurtunity to praise Jimmy Webb, who wrote this gorgeous song. Way to go, Jimmy.

  • This song reminds me of when I was little and my Dad used to play this tape in the car... I love this song. A favourite of mine. I love this version, so beautiful.

Thanks so much for posting, brought back wonderufl memories for me.

We can feel all the emotions that he's feeling whilst he sings... I can empathise the pain of being separated from someone you love and maybe never seeing them again. Glen expresses this perfectly.

  • Y'know, there was a long time when, for me, Glen was "uncool." But nowadays I look at these clips and see that he was (is?) a polished professional entertainer. He had talent and was willing to put in the time to get it right.

  • This particular performance of Galveston for me is the best version I've heard from Mr. Campbell thus far. The two things I especially enjoyed where the slower tempo played at adagio, and the majestic string arrangements. Honestly, it was so beautiful it brought tears to my eyes.

  • pure and simple great

  • Around what year was this made ?Just curious.

  • I've been waiting for someone to post this special version of Galveston from Royal Festival Hall in London. It is so beautiful! Thanks for posting:)

  • Hi wleme,

Thanks so much for putting this up, and the other segments of the concert.

  • beautiful xxx
