This is truly the most loveliest version I have ever heard him sing. When he sings, I can smell the ocean breezes . He can rest knowing he gave so much of himself in such a beautiful way. People spend a lifetime trying to leave something beautiful behind, Glen Campbell did so for many years with ease and graciousness, I will enjoy it and wish him love and support.
This particular version of this song is my all-time fave Glen tune. Discovered this version just befor my Mom died so it will remain forever synonymous with that.
This song always brings tears to my eyes. I remember sitting with my Daddy as he told me of the music he listened to while he was away in Vietnam and "Galveston" was among one of his favorite songs.
P.S. the songwrite had the Spanish-American war in mind when this was written. But as we all know, we can intrepret in any way that works for ourselves =)
This is so beautiful, and sad, I can see the guy in Vietnam, terrified, wanting to come back to his girlfriend and his home, probably where he grew up. It makes me cry. Just opens my heart right up.
@jbeng1953 Thank you forever for your service. I'm so sorry you had to go through such a rough time in this country's history. That was a terrible war, but the way the US treated the soldiers coming home was just as terrible.
@tptvox Where you been the last 200 years? USA has never treats its troop with anything resembling respect.. Our vets have had to fight for every 'benefit' they have ever received. After all, we hanged the Bonus Boys on Penn. Avenue for daring to ask for their promised money early. My simplified answer; lets give all our returning vets a Gold Card when they come back home,,Gold Card is good for all the gas that they care to buy, forever. Let them sell it if they want. No ?'s asked.
The writer (Webb) of this song said it wasn't about Vietnam, but about the Spanish-American War of 1898, when Galveston was a major city (before the Storm of 1900 destroyed it). But it could be applicable to any war if one wants it to be.
Hey captkronoscorvinus You are right on!!You said it perfectly.I'm not an ex marine but I'd gladly go so my nieces and nephews don't . But only for a legit purpose or
reason., not the bulshit the knuckleheads keep getting us into.Screw the chicken hawks. ...and to all others a good night.
IT IS AN ANTI-WAR SONG!!! GOD DAMN LISTEN TO THE LYRICS.
By the way, if your a HUMAN BEING, then your Anti-War.
Or do you want your son, daughter, grandson or grand daughter to die in a conflict 4000 miles from their home. If freedom is in such a state of danger, then I'm 52 and you just tell me where I need to go, I'm an ex Marine and I will sure as fuck die for my country before my Grandson does!!!!!!
My prayers and thanks to all those who served in the armed forces, giving up family and friends to defend me . I have what I have because your bravery has given it to me. I am always grateful.
This is "OK" but I like the "original" way he sang this song a lot better. It is a bittersweet story for sure. Being a Veteran I appreciate these lyrics. I have been there...
@TinStar188 This is actually the original way that Jimmy Webb sang the song. When Glenn first heard it - Jimmy was performing it slowly. Glenn felt like the song would be better sped up and was a natural with what was going on in the Vietnam war. The rest is musical history.
@brainerdrebel Philip Caputo namechecked this tune in his book "A rumour of war" about his time before and during Vietnam as a 2nd LT with the Marine Corp. Poignant indeed.
bluebirdGuitar. I saw him sing this arrangement. Ive looked for this version for so long . My 38 yaer old son was named after him Ive seen him many times since but have been disappointed . I thik he also did Charley riches most beautifull girl in the world at the same concert . wonderfull
What a spell-binder that man was!!! He doesn't just sing - he weaves a web of story-telling, and does is SO well :-+). Splendidly mellow voice also.... the complete package.
This was taped at he Royal Festival Hall in London on the nights of April 21-22. Glen's birthday in on April 22 so, to answer your last question, he was 40 yours old for the first show and 41 for the second! ;-)
Glen is one of a kind, and still gives a great performance! He's truly a Hall of Famer, the likes of which will not be found again... Great clip! Thanks!

yes it was & I remember it well, I was in the draft age period but had a college deferment.......God Bless all those that fought but never came back and also those that came back but were not treated with respect from others........
@bigadda1969 back in the 60's, you did not have computers, no cell phones, no I phones, no notebook computers
gas was 35 cents per gallon, and their were only 5/6 local TV stations per major city in the usa. no such thing as cable or direct TV. you lived life as is and hoped you would not be drafted and be sent to Vietnam to fight
Never heard this slowed version before. Th evocal nuances, especially in the 1st verse are stunning. Glen takes such understandable pride in his guitar virtuosity that his immense vocal skills are asily overlooked.
Ifc....I agree also with the 2 comments......how could anyone not like his voice with ANY of his tunes....just sit back and relax and take it from their
I believe that this is during the spanish american war. He left his young woman in Galveston and said his last goodbye to her before leaving to war. He and she knew that he would never come by and he was ultimately killed during the spanish american war by cannons, which did eventually sink the USS Maine in the spanish american war. Cleaning his gun and thinking about his love and Galveston and wishing he was there and not in war. She was left behind as he never did return.
In my mind, the song is set during the civil war, but the longing and fear of dying before seeing again the ones he loves... timeless. All the things about Galveston reminds him of her.
beautiful music/picture. anyone knows what year this picture was taken of Glen??? And wear the music was played??? I have to say, the man has put his heart/soul into this video as he does with all his other tunes.....this person sure gets it............
this isnt a song about galveston as much as it is a song about a young man who could be from anywhere who will miss his hometown and his loved ones when he's away in the military. and please realize that the military wasnt volunteer when our fathers and brothers fought and died there
When I listen, it's 1969 and the cannons are firing on the other side of the hill I was bunking on...as you suggested, how odd that such a beautiful song can bring back the chills, real and hard to forget.
Those were the years. Where did the last 40 go? Just before I got drafted I remember friends getting ready to go to a concert at a place called Woodstock. The summer of 69, Ted Kennedy couldn't kept the Oldsmobile on the bridge and Charlie Manson did the murders, Man on the Moon.
@lilgroff22 Agree. Galveston isn't like Waikiki Honolulu but it's still a great place. Home is where you make it. If it's Mineola, TX and that's where your grandma lives and fixes you the best breakfast you ever have, then that's your place. God bless all the kids serving their country in the military right now. Return home soon whether it's to Mineola, TX, Galveston or wherever.

Dig the crazy pageboy hair cut. I believe this arrangement is similar to the version Jimmy Webb did for himself. Great singing. Dude can play great axe, too. My guess this was perhaps mid to late 70s before Glen went south with booze and coke and hung out with that bimbo country singer Tanya Tucker. It's amazing he's still alive!

Thanks so much for posting, brought back wonderufl memories for me.
We can feel all the emotions that he's feeling whilst he sings... I can empathise the pain of being separated from someone you love and maybe never seeing them again. Glen expresses this perfectly.
Y'know, there was a long time when, for me, Glen was "uncool." But nowadays I look at these clips and see that he was (is?) a polished professional entertainer. He had talent and was willing to put in the time to get it right.
This particular performance of Galveston for me is the best version I've heard from Mr. Campbell thus far. The two things I especially enjoyed where the slower tempo played at adagio, and the majestic string arrangements. Honestly, it was so beautiful it brought tears to my eyes.
This is truly the most loveliest version I have ever heard him sing. When he sings, I can smell the ocean breezes . He can rest knowing he gave so much of himself in such a beautiful way.
