@QuikDJ Jacob might be able to ressurect people as he seemed to heal Ilana and he also healed (or brought back) Dogen's son and Locke. In this scene he might not have meant that he literally couldn't, but instead thought Richard should have a new life on the Island or perhaps he can't raise people who have been impersonated by MiB.

Jacob is so cool, and so was this episode. I think the reason Jacob was trying to baptise Richard was because he had been corrupted by the smoke man (which should be his nickname not MiB), maybe that's why Charlie thought Aaron had to be baptized?

ppl are saying why did he defend himself here but not against ben. at this point there are 0 candidates on the island, if he dies thats it, the MIB is free. when ben confronts him jacob has what is most important to him, a choice. if he dies another will take his place. so he also wanted to give ben a choice, and as miles says jacob always hoped he was wrong about ben, he thought he would see sense and do the right thing.

Regardless of what were his intentions, MIB freed Richard and gave him water. What did Jacob do ? He beat the sh*t out of Richard and almost drown him. Yeah, he made him immortal but whatever...

It finally gave a sense of direction to all the events that have been occurance, and a general sense of context, too. Despite not showing cool stuff like ab aeterno did (eg. Titus & Mark etc), it was even more engaging and much more dynamic.

Jacob defended himself against Richard, because at the time, there were no candidates on the island, if he died, the darkness would be freed....

When it was "bens turn" he had many candidates on the island, so he gave Ben the choice, hoping Ben would make the right one...obviously Jacob was wrong about Ben
