Thanks for the vid m8, as we voted again, NO about a year after your vid, I'll say first Iceland is not little its about the same size is little England, -in the grand scheme of things, 2nd now in April of 2011, Landsbanki has allot of monies/building on English soil, that will be sold/given back, at the end of this summer, effectively nulling out this debt, resulting in all this matter been blown out of per-portions on both sides, over chump change/nickles and dimes.
Many people talk like the UK and Holland will never get any penny when the fact is that they will -and it's been a fact for a while now- get the quite large sum that is the old Landsbanki's bankrupt estate.
We voted No on a "deal" where we would have had a great risk allowing these foreign governments to seize any natural resource they wanted -or even piece of land for that matter.
Also like nobody here lost anything in the crash. Many many people lost their life savings, houses etc.
@KoopaKabana Would that by chance be the Banker run european court?
Nations like Britain are responsible for the terrible mess the worlds financial system is now in, precisely because the allowed the controls that were placed in position to stop such an occurrence to be dismantled.
The good people of Iceland had nothing to do with the collapse of the banking industry all around the globe.
Iceland needs to honour its financial obligations to both the UK and The Netherlands- expecting these two nations to pay for the faults of the Icelandic banking system is unacceptable. The Icelandic people have made a colossal mistake by voting no- credit rating will be downgraded, EU membership will rightfully be vetoed. What a mess. Your anti capitalistic views are laughable. The Icelandic taxpayer should pay for the mess their Government has created- like every other recession hit economy.
No Iceland clearly had no understanding of capitalistic system hence the financial mess it is in. Downgrading a country's credit rating is the last thing a crippled economy needs- also EU membership for Iceland has been on the agenda for years, perhaps if it were part of the EU in the first place it wouldn't be in such a mess. This argument is going nowhere, you're void of the truth and diselosinal- how anyone can argue for Iceland not to pay its financial obligations is beyond me.
Why are the Iceland population being pestered to repay money they have nothing to do with? Are we seeing that weird thing here where the people are the governments security on loans ?
Iceland should pay us back. It's the same(ish) circumstances when the UK were coming out of WWII, we paid the US back, so it's only right Iceland pay us back.
There is no way the people of Iceland should stand the monies lost by PRIVATE banks.
Let me ask you a question.
Why have the assets of the disgraced bankers who were running these institutions never been seized?
The are still living the high life shacked up here in LONDON.
And as for your comparison, this situation is nothing like the war renumeration. All money is now ceated as DEBT, merely by the stroke of a key on a computer. Years ago money had a gold backing and so substance.
Yes it does matter that the value of cash decreases every day, were it not to do so then unions would not fight as hard as they do to acheive pay raises that at least match the rate of inflation/actual currency devaluation.
Further more inflation does NOT increase minorly, it is actually continually compounding upon its-self.
At the end of the process HYPERINFLATION 'IS INEVITABLE'.
At which point it does reach it's REAL VALUE, WHICH IS IN FACT 'ZERO'.
Economists and experts have been having hyperinflation will be inevitable for years.
Also, I never said anything about inflation for starters, I was talking about the value of money decreasing.
Why on Earth do you support Iceland in all this? You're British, you're a shame to the country to not support your own. Fair enough Iceland are in a sticky situation right now, but they owe us money, they need to pay eventually.
The icelandic people are not right, the icelandic government still has to pay it back by 2020 whether the people like it or not, that's what the loan was agreed on before this referendum.
Jamie, you clearly don't understand the function of government.
Government is there to carry out the wishes of the people, not to bully the people into doing what the powers behind government coerce it into doing.
As you have been raised in the UK, you clearly think that the people of a nation have NO SAY in the running of a nation. WELL MY FRIEND THE GOOD PEOPLE OF ICELAND HAVE JUST PLACED THEIR GOVERNMENT CORRECTLY INTO PLACE.
Look Jamie, I am not intending to be insulting in any way. It is just that you are clearly making comments on a subject that you know very little about.

@Kjalli The British and Dutch governments would never agree to simply "pay" a country, there was a loan set in place that Iceland needed to pay half of the total amount back by 2020 and the rest by 2040.
@jamieperrydude again you got your facts wrong. The British and Dutch governments paid out the icesave accounts to their own countrymen and then held discussions with Icelandic gov. regarding a pay-back plan, and their terms were rejected. U must understand that there is still a debate going on excactly what are Icelands obligations concerning icesave. (see Alan Lipietz)
@jamieperrydude "There is no sovereign guarantee on the depositor's scheme according to the EU directive says Alain Lipietz who chaired the Finance Committee of the Parliament of Europe which wrote the directive. @jamieperrydude Therefore, the British and the Dutch have to pay for the depositors in those countries, alternatively if they don't like it they can settle this in the European Court of Justice."

Oh dear, a fat self-hating Brit telling the icelanders what a marvellous job they're doing. Maybe he'd be happy footing my share of the British bailout of Icesave customers since he's so keen on standing up for the rights of 'Little Iceland'.
The schools and education they enjoyed during the good times were all paid partly with the tax proceeds of their banking sector. Far better schools and education than we have in the UK! Now in the bad times they don't want to pay. Too bad.

Icelanders were happy to enjoy one of the highest GDPs in the world during the good times. Now the milk has soured they don't want to pay. They shouldnt have let a bank become so large if they weren't prepared for the consequences of failure. Every Icelander OWES the UK that money, for the education, healthcare etc. they got.

@NowisEvollovetion. Youre advocating letting the banks fail - a terrible idea. At the moment, the people who will pay for Icesave are the ones who benefited - the Icelanders. If the debts were voided, any money left would be distributed according to who was owed what. Thousands of ordinary people would be bankrupted, lifetime savings gone overnight. You might argue they deserve it, but how can you expect someone to fully explore the viability of their bank before investing
Yes let badly run banks fail. The banking industry is the only industry where companies that are badly run are allowed to continue trading, not using their own money but using public money thrown at them out of FEAR.
And were banks to be allowed to fail when they were badly run/uncompetitive, well then your second dilemma would disappear instantly as there would be far fewer BAD BANKS to worry about.
@NowisEvollovetion. I would love to see the day you wake up, pop down to the supermarket, collect your food and go to the checkout. When you put your card in, its declined. Declined again - whats going on? Oh thats right, your bank has gone under because of its "badly run" buisness model. Too bad, guess you shouldn't have invested. Everything you had (which from the looks of it isn't much) is gone. Nevermind. Bankers aren't idiots, this isnt a sign of bad management. Its capitalism, get over it.
You beat me to the comment that was forming as I watched, that the people of Iceland are fortunate to have been given the choice about whether or not to bail out their criminal banks. In the UK and the US, we have not had that good fortune, and we are going to suffer for the "choices" our leaders have made on our behalf. ='[.]'=
I also want to add, there is a reason Grimsson let people vote. It is because they asked for it. And in Iceland, the public opinion matters the most.
I have not seen any huge crowds forming anywhere in the United States or the United Kingdom. Why? Maybe because you aren't as well informed as that tiny island.
Take for example the united states, the media hasn't even talked about this. At all, 0 news at cnn. One tiny article in fox news. and so on.
@NowisEvollovetion you're excused. Thanks for posting this vid by the way - you pretty much expressed my thoughts on the subject. I don't claim to be some kind of financial expert - but then I don't need to be to know when someone is being shafted. I guess we Brits should know about that.
The investors in these banks invested with them for greater than average returns, and they failed.
Why should anyone have to bail out those who were clearly GAMBLERS.
Lets say you went into a casino the day after losing your money there and asked for it back, they would just tell you to F@@K OFF and slam the door in your face.
This is great news! I'm English and I've fully supported the Icelandic people on this matter, purely because it was unfair how they were having these debts forced upon them by the Brits/Americans. It's great that Grimmson gave them the chance to vote NO and set an example to other countries. I just wish we'd been given the same courtesy, but to be honest, it'd be unlikely with the level of corruption infesting our political system. All I can offer is Congratulations! :)
Well I know nothing of Iceland or their banking issues other than they recently pretty much went bankrupt. But from what you said here sounds to me like they were given the option between pull the plug on the economy, or re-inflate the bubble. The concept of giving them the CHOICE really shocks me! Would that happen anywhere else? No, but it certainly should!
So what's next? Their banks fail and they have to rebuild their currency the old fashioned way?
If you watch the attached interview in the more info section between Icelandic president Mr Olafur Grimsson and the BBC's Jeremy Paxman you will gain some understanding of the situation.
I loved your last video and gave my support to Icelanders also.
Now I'm wondering which country will be next?
Greece? the UK? Ireland? Portugal? Spain? the USA?
umm?
One thing is for sure, the Voters have for the first time stood up to the Bankers and gave a good indication of how things are gonna go from now on in OUR world!....we are no longer currency slaves...got it Queens and Kings!

@KoopaKabana You obviously have no understanding of the workings of a capitalistic system.
For your information the 'capital' bit of capitalism actually refers to 'savings', not debt.
Our current world monetary system relies solely upon the creation and distribution of 'debt', and debt of course can never be classed as capital.
Capitalism died on the very day that all money became fiat, and purely created 'as debt'.
And as for the downgrading and EU aspects, who really cares?

Jamie, INFLATION is precisely what causes a currency to lose it purchasing power/value.
By inflating a currency supply (by in effect making it larger) you dilute/devalue or destroy it.
What do you think the process know as QUANTITATIVE EASING (inflation by another name) was all about?
And do you really think that the £200 BILLION that was created 'out of thin air' as a part of that QE programme has had NO effect on the pound?
Come on!!

One tiny article in fox news. and so on.

The Icelanders are NO MUGS by a long shot, they do seem very well informed.

Is that the smell of revolution in the air. Let's hope it's contagious. Respect to Icelandic people from the UK.

You know what fbw,
In both of the videos I have done on this subject, not ONE individual has said the Icelandic people should stand this PRIVATE CORPORATE DEBT.
How refreshing is that?
To me that just shows in a small way that many are now united against the clearly now corrupted powers that be.
WE (all of us) HAVE SIMPLY HAD ENOUGH.
Cheer's,
Andrew.

@NowisEvollovetion you're excused. Thanks for posting this vid by the way - you pretty much expressed my thoughts on the subject. I don't claim to be some kind of financial expert - but then I don't need to be to know when someone is being shafted. I guess we Brits should know about that.
fetidbrainwaves 2 years ago 2
If you look at the numbers it's clear they can't possibly pay off the money that's owed. They've defaulted and they can't pay it back.
Not unless they print a $100 trillion bank note and present that for payment.
:)

With greater reward obviously comes greater risk.
The investors in these banks invested with them for greater than average returns, and they failed.
Why should anyone have to bail out those who were clearly GAMBLERS.
Lets say you went into a casino the day after losing your money there and asked for it back, they would just tell you to F@@K OFF and slam the door in your face.
Why is this ANY DIFFERENT?

Congratulations Iceland! May your independence spark the quest towards freedom among the rest of us.
Thank you for report Andrew

Their banks fail and they have to rebuild their currency the old fashioned way?
drutter 2 years ago 2
Britain and the Netherlands have been attempting to bully the government/people of Iceland into accepting this extremely burdensome PRIVATE BANK DEBT.
This they have done by threatening that they would not allow the IMF to lend any money to Iceland in these clearly testing times.
And still the Icelanders have given the UK and the NL's the FINGER.
They look like they are willing to start all over again, FROM THE VERY BEGINNING.
Good luck to them.

drutter,
If you watch the attached interview in the more info section between Icelandic president Mr Olafur Grimsson and the BBC's Jeremy Paxman you will gain some understanding of the situation.

Yes, the Banksters Hiding in London should face the music in Iceland! They will quickly feel the heat, anger, in that cold country!
Hendo1974 2 years ago 8
I agree, send them back to Iceland from their penthouses in LONDON to face the music.
STRIP THEM OF ALL OF THEIR ASSETS AND THEN DEPORT THEM.
PARASITES.
