THIS IS MY ALL TIME FAVOURITE OF THEIR SINGLES - YET IS TINGED WITH SADNESS AS IT WAS AROUND THE TIME OF JOHN LENNON'S TRAGIC AND UNEXPECTED DEATH. - THAT MUSIC STILL; LIVES ON
That's true. I think I was one of the only ones of my friends who knew who they where. I love 80's music it's the best, funny part or should I say the best part was when a couple of days I was listening to an 80's station on itunes when my 11yr. old daughter started singing along to some of the songs, she told me she had been listening to them on my ipod & that she really loves the music plus she hates how much cursing musicians use nowadays. I'm so happy, that tells me I'm doing a good job!
@Yssie08 Indeed, old chap! My 9 year old boy stands for Billy Idol and stuff and when he was just a little baby I used to rock him to sleep with Spandau ballads :)
Ahhhh-the New romantics-Spandau Ballett-Best band ever!!!! I am an American and they should of been way bigger over here! On MTV, Duran Duran got most of the air time-such a shame. I just feel Spandau blows Duran-AWAY...POOF! Luv ya, Tony and Steve!!!!! Kemps-well, the wrote the songs but what they did was UNFORGIVABLE to Tony, Steve and John-period!
Saw Spandau in Sydney last night and was blown away..so much so that I just bought tix for Sun night's concert. Tony's voice was amazing and still hit the right notes..
I'm a Fan from the USA and I have loved Spandau Ballet since the very beginning. From their New Romantic Period until their later years. I'm glad they have put aside their differences and have come back together.
@amebac saw Spandau Ballet last night in Brussels, and they were just fantastic. Like time had stood still, Tony's voice was as charismatic and clear as back in the day. Totally agree with your comment, yes, he was such a beauty in this video.
saw them 2 weeks ago in Rome and it was such a fun... almost with the same people I was with back in 1984. My first concert. 13 years old... it seems yesterday...
Don't know of this will be of interest to anyone but I this song has since been sampled by two of the biggest breakbeat teams (have a look under this name: Krafty Kuts & Freestylers feat. Dynamite MC - Dynamite Love)
Original was awesome, and with a few twists... wow
oh yes this is a great kickin trak it chugs along just nicely. tony is on mastercheif at the moment and has put sum wait on since these great days, love the bass sound here
Umm, a good number and thanks for posting, but it reminds me of just how much I used to enjoy watching "live" performances on television and exclaiming, "HEY! THEIR INSTRUMENTS AREN'T PLUGGED IN!"
Err, I love, love Spandau but DD did NOT copy them. If anything Spandau tried to copy DD - doesn't the Gold video remind you of HLTW? The lead singer as an Indiana Jones-type explorer in an exotic location..I wonder who did that first??!! Duran Duran were more successful and sold more records because they were more innovative and original than Spandau (Heaven Is A Secret or Lifeline...seriously naff and 70s, vs Union Of The Snake or Notorious?! Don't even try to compare them.
I wouldn't say that either copied either, you can draw similarities with bands if you look hard enough, sometimes the similarities just exist. Though I wouldn't say DD selling more records than Spandau really counts for anything, They both have out sold Kraftwerk, but Kraftwerk are immensly more innovative, original and groundbreaking than both of them. And I prefer Spandau :D Duran have some great tracks but Spandau are more consistent I think.
Spandau Ballet - unfortunately the most underrated band during the 80's in the USA. My god, how could anyone not just love them and their original, creative, high quality music!!
@evergonge Duh!!!!!!! But I am in the U.S.!! They were never given the attention they deserved here. "True" made it to #2. "Gold" and "Only When You Leave" never had much airlplay. That was it. We missed out on their earlier songs like "To Cut A Long Story Short". "Round and Round" or "I'll Fly For You", were never released here, both of which could have been tope 10 easily. They were not promoted here properly. Even the members of SB have said as much.
I'm so glad they are making a comeback. I was a big fan years ago, saw them a few times. Yes, and I had a long curly fringe and wore a kilt and frilly blouse! Great times, Great music, thanks for clip, my fav. of their songs!!
Well i'm a Duran fan and me and a few other hard duranies used to love going out and smaking seven bells of shit out of all you ultras, usually at the chipper or at the bus stops, many a midure fan got the millimeter tread on their head from one of my white slip ons, WILB BOYS!
I'm an ultravox ultra and me and my crew used to hang around outside spandau ballet concerts waiting for victims to wander out. Many's a spand fan got a midge ure tash carved into their top lip thanks to me. Vienaaaaaaaaaaaa!
People, please stop being ignorant. Synthpop, New Romantic, Dark Wave, and Goth, both are forms of NEW WAVE!! Stop trying to be sooooo unique. Uhhhh, just to add New Wave is a subgroup of PUNK ROCK!!! Guys, grow up and learn your music history.
I agree. I was a scruffy 13 year old punk in London when this came out, and it was shocking to see how they dressed, they were so different to anything else; weird kilts, tartan shawls, guitars held so high; they were original, and it was punk.
perfect example of a band that is wrongly known for one song..TRUE..and although I do like that song....does not represent the band.....this song, Chant no 1, etc...were classic Spandau
I always wondered what was behind the tartan and sporrans with these guys with this song? I don't think this image lasted much beyond this first song, and these guys were north Londoners!
I do and its one of the best songs I like of all time,
its got such a connection to how I was wondering about things back then and then Bang, this song came out, it must be English precoscious or what, I dunno...its Pure
Thks for this, my fav song of the 80's, i'm afraid I was a real fashion victim and went to a wedding wearing a kilt with a long fringe across my eye. lol!
I literally grew my hair for 2 years without a hair cut to achieve that Duran Duran look. 80's fashion victim, that makes two of us...Though they were good times ;-)
Out of all the guys..~I loved Steve the most. Tony Hadley looked like my brother-in-law..so it was "strange" liking him when I was 12! ..The Kemp boys were "pretty" but full of it...Nah...Steve was GORGEOUS!. and i'm nearly 40 and I still think so..yum!
I love New Wave!!! This song SHOULD HAVE reached the top 10 in the U.S. This would be a great track to put on one of those Living in Oblivion or Just Can't Get Enough New Wave Hits of the 80's compilations.
As much as I please to know, which is quite a pantload due to countless hours of research on the subject and thousands of dollars spent on records, tapes, and CDs...
It's true that I can't re-create the decade down to the last miniscule detail, but that doesn't mean I know little about the decade. What I know and what I've done do know what I know is most certainly "enough" to make an educated comment such as that which spawned this entire conversation. I know a great deal about the 80s, I consider it to be my domain, and I find your conclusion that I'm simply a kid who doesn't know what she's talking about to be wrong. I am done with this conversation.
It's pitiable, your thinking that you are so 'cool' because you have disdain for the arts of your own time. Sure, you grew up with Britney and Beyonce, but you've also got the Postal Service,Oval, Andreas Tilliander, Otto Von Schirach, Bats for Lashes and Dresden Dolls. Plus ten thousand other interesting musical artists. When you learn to appreciate the music of the past in context of where it's taken us, then you'll have a valid opinion. Until then, the mall is your domain.
Gary Kemp was the guitarist, Martin Kemp -bass guitar and Steve Norman was bongos and sax - which aren't in this song so I think they strapped a guitar onto him to mime with ala Andrew Ridgley
Cool song. Thanks to my bro Ryu.

As a ballet fan - and someone who went to the same clubs as thedm (LBR) I find it incomprehensible that people acclaim the Durannies in latter years.

I'm gonna make a bold statement here, but this is actually quite a groovy song.

That's not bold. It's just the truth!

Spandau Ballet one of the most under rated bands ever

Spandau were really new when this song came out. I love this song! Thank you for posting the video, it's really rare!

How right was AnnieLennox1954, a great decade followed by a shocker!!! Bring back the 80's...

I wonder what a 16-year.old girl can know about the 80s...
foreverspaced 4 years ago
As much as I please to know, which is quite a pantload due to countless hours of research on the subject and thousands of dollars spent on records, tapes, and CDs...
AnnieLennox1954 4 years ago
That won't never be enough as you didn't "live" those years.
Not your fault of course, but you can get as much stuff as you like but that won't re-produce the atmosphere together with pros and cons.
My 2 cents.
foreverspaced 4 years ago
that won't ever, my bad...

AnnieLennox1954 4 years ago
That's what you are for sure and with your last comments you proved it out.
Know what? What a kid says is the truth, what an adult says is an opinion.
"Feel" the difference, kid.

Rebecca263, that is the probably one of the best put point of views I've ever heard (and I thoroughly agree with too). Cheers!

Me too!
Excellent opinion.
It's a pity she got her account suspended, who knows why... :(

I'd love to know why 3 of the band have guitars???? hahaha even the keyboard player has a guitar strapped to him.
gunnerglory 4 years ago
You can never have too many guitars!!
joshuatrees 4 years ago
Gary Kemp was the guitarist, Martin Kemp -bass guitar and Steve Norman was bongos and sax - which aren't in this song so I think they strapped a guitar onto him to mime with ala Andrew Ridgley

Amazing how such a vivid and exciting decade like the 1980s was followed by such a wretchedly bland decade like the 90s...
AnnieLennox1954 4 years ago 2
There wasn't enough drugs taken in the 90's though.
gunnerglory 4 years ago
True. Oh, how ashamed I am to be a child of the 90s.... :(
AnnieLennox1954 4 years ago
Well, Smashing Pumpkins hit the 90s, Manic Street Preachers hit the 90s, Oasis hit the 90s but yet it's a wretchedly bland decade...Mumble, mumble...
foreverspaced 4 years ago
Those names mean nothing to me... and don't hold a candle to Depeche Mode, Spandau Ballet, Culture Club, Eurythmics, etc.
AnnieLennox1954 4 years ago
We have different tastes for sure, but you can't say 90s were a blande decade just because you don't like its biggest names.
I do like
