  • Cool song. Thanks to my bro Ryu.

  • thumbs up if you think this song is about male prostitution.

  • this didnt get to no1, it reached no5 in dec 1980.

  • Wow! Never knew that Tom Cruise did vocals while John Cusack played bass for this awesome band. If only it were true, very similar looks though.

  • uploaded mp3 on soundcloud, have a search!

  • Wow! Tony hadley is brilliant. how old was he? 19 and on TOTP?! He should've been asked to be a judge on the x factor

  • Tony Hadley, lead singer of Spandau Ballet, 1st us tour summer 2011; aug 13 irving plaza new york city ny; aug 14 market days chicago il; aug 16 house of blues west hollywood ca; aug 18 ramona mainstage ramona ca; aug 20 freemont street experience las vegas nv; aug 21 red devil lounge san francisco ca.

  • this is probably them in high school, that i've heard they were making a band through high school

  • Wonderful music, shocking lyrics, incredible voice and handsome kids... what else?

  • gary kemp wrote some great songs. you cant take it away from him

  • fucking tuuuune, the 8 dislikes... ask your dad re 80's what proper music was like otherwise dont even bother rateing..... 80-84 tuuuunes

  • Easily their best track and v. catchy synth!

  • looking for some people who can travel back in time with my new time machine..anyone ??? No charge !!! :)

  • ant beat the eighties thanks love it

  • A radio station in New York used to play British stuff every Friday, around the time these guys, Ultravox, and OMD were making the charts in Britain. They were a welcome change from Styx, Foreigner, Journey, and the rest of what passed for rock in the USA back then.

  • What are they wearing....

  • I hate this song and this band but credit where credit due, this song and its sample led to one of my favourite mash ups of all time.

Freestylers & Dynamite MC - Dynamite Love

  • wow i was 17 when this hit number 1, hanging out in all the trendiest bars!!

it a great song got a great feel.

    best days of my life.

  • check the cover out by the cazals

  • THIS IS MY ALL TIME FAVOURITE OF THEIR SINGLES - YET IS TINGED WITH SADNESS AS IT WAS AROUND THE TIME OF JOHN LENNON'S TRAGIC AND UNEXPECTED DEATH. - THAT MUSIC STILL; LIVES ON

  • @gilllew gold!!??!

  • Ah, memories of the school disco. I loved this- still do.

  • 6 deaf people watched this!

  • Very Scottish, Tony! lol!

  • great song but an english man in tartan no way

  • BRILL

  • That's true. I think I was one of the only ones of my friends who knew who they where. I love 80's music it's the best, funny part or should I say the best part was when a couple of days I was listening to an 80's station on itunes when my 11yr. old daughter started singing along to some of the songs, she told me she had been listening to them on my ipod & that she really loves the music plus she hates how much cursing musicians use nowadays. I'm so happy, that tells me I'm doing a good job!

  • @Yssie08 bless that is so cute, my daughter is 2, hope she feels the same way when she is 11! you are clearly doing a great job!

  • @Yssie08 Indeed, old chap! My 9 year old boy stands for Billy Idol and stuff and when he was just a little baby I used to rock him to sleep with Spandau ballads :)

  • love it...

  • @bluenosemilly go bck to xfactor & let some judge make ur mind up for you!!!

  • wow! tony hadley looks so boyish here. i wonder how old he is here? cute bangs.

  • @backchat2009mrr

    Tony Hadley was 20

  • oh-Martin is HILARIOUS HERE!! god-he is NOT playing that guitar and his jerky movements-too funny. kinda cute, though...hehe

  • Ahhhh-the New romantics-Spandau Ballett-Best band ever!!!! I am an American and they should of been way bigger over here! On MTV, Duran Duran got most of the air time-such a shame. I just feel Spandau blows Duran-AWAY...POOF! Luv ya, Tony and Steve!!!!! Kemps-well, the wrote the songs but what they did was UNFORGIVABLE to Tony, Steve and John-period!

  • 1980

  • Great...

  • oh God....turn back the hands of time....please?

  • Oisin vielä 11 jos saisin valita.

  • there soooo young love them then and now

  • Spandau Ballet are:

    Tony Hadley- Lead Singer

    Gary Kemp- Guitar/ Keyboards

    Martin Kemp- Bass

Steve Norman- Saxaphone, Percussion and Guitar

    John Keeble- Drums

  • If anyone was making stuff this good now, I'd start paying attention again.

  • SWEET TIMES

  • I'm an 80's tragic....and proud of it!!!!

  • Saw Spandau in Sydney last night and was blown away..so much so that I just bought tix for Sun night's concert. Tony's voice was amazing and still hit the right notes..

  • I'm a Fan from the USA and I have loved Spandau Ballet since the very beginning. From their New Romantic Period until their later years. I'm glad they have put aside their differences and have come back together.

  • what month is this

  • I love Duran Duran but I perfer Spandau Ballet because they aren't so main stream

  • Luv this song so much.

Tony was such a beauty in this video. When wes it recorded? '81 or '82... What a great past!

  • @amebac saw Spandau Ballet last night in Brussels, and they were just fantastic. Like time had stood still, Tony's voice was as charismatic and clear as back in the day. Totally agree with your comment, yes, he was such a beauty in this video.

  • saw them 2 weeks ago in Rome and it was such a fun... almost with the same people I was with back in 1984. My first concert. 13 years old... it seems yesterday...

  • Comment removed

  • This was a totally new deal back then... just wonderful.... 3 decades passed by and nothing as revolutinary as this in horizon

  • So Depeche Mode inspirated!

  • @Paint4U2 This title was recorded in 1980 and it was well before depeche mode

  • You are right!A just checked it!

  • The Spands! Fab stuff.

  • Don't know of this will be of interest to anyone but I this song has since been sampled by two of the biggest breakbeat teams (have a look under this name: Krafty Kuts & Freestylers feat. Dynamite MC - Dynamite Love)

Original was awesome, and with a few twists... wow

  • well, just knew this tune from CAZALS, had to google it to find out that it's a spandau ballet cover.

    crazy world.

  • hop[e you enyoyed it, its a classic, did you recognise the kemp brothers from the KRAYS FILM??

  • Great band, great music, great clothes, great time. But... Martin, why don't you spit out the chewingum before start the videoclip recording???

  • haha yeh, but he thought it was cool to chew gum at the time!! were you born in 1984? it was a good erreor, although some say it wasn't

  • oh yes this is a great kickin trak it chugs along just nicely. tony is on mastercheif at the moment and has put sum wait on since these great days, love the bass sound here

  • Umm, a good number and thanks for posting, but it reminds me of just how much I used to enjoy watching "live" performances on television and exclaiming, "HEY! THEIR INSTRUMENTS AREN'T PLUGGED IN!"

  • Grandiose.........loved this track......kilts and sporrans .driving drum bass..........whats here not to like..........

  • Duran duran copied Spandau. That is a well documented fact. They were the best. Admittedly they sold out to pop, but they were the first and best.

  • How could it be possible? Duran Duran started on 1978 in Birmingham and Spandau Ballet in London, 1979. I like both groups anyway.

  • Err, I love, love Spandau but DD did NOT copy them. If anything Spandau tried to copy DD - doesn't the Gold video remind you of HLTW? The lead singer as an Indiana Jones-type explorer in an exotic location..I wonder who did that first??!! Duran Duran were more successful and sold more records because they were more innovative and original than Spandau (Heaven Is A Secret or Lifeline...seriously naff and 70s, vs Union Of The Snake or Notorious?! Don't even try to compare them.

  • I wouldn't say that either copied either, you can draw similarities with bands if you look hard enough, sometimes the similarities just exist. Though I wouldn't say DD selling more records than Spandau really counts for anything, They both have out sold Kraftwerk, but Kraftwerk are immensly more innovative, original and groundbreaking than both of them. And I prefer Spandau :D Duran have some great tracks but Spandau are more consistent I think.

  • Spandau Ballet - unfortunately the most underrated band during the 80's in the USA. My god, how could anyone not just love them and their original, creative, high quality music!!

  • @magicalmisstery they are english

  • @magicalmisstery they are english!!!???

  • @evergonge Duh!!!!!!! But I am in the U.S.!! They were never given the attention they deserved here. "True" made it to #2. "Gold" and "Only When You Leave" never had much airlplay. That was it. We missed out on their earlier songs like "To Cut A Long Story Short". "Round and Round" or "I'll Fly For You", were never released here, both of which could have been tope 10 easily. They were not promoted here properly. Even the members of SB have said as much.

  • @evergonge Where did you think they were from?

  • I'm so glad they are making a comeback. I was a big fan years ago, saw them a few times. Yes, and I had a long curly fringe and wore a kilt and frilly blouse! Great times, Great music, thanks for clip, my fav. of their songs!!

  • This is great for all romantics!

  • Well i'm a Duran fan and me and a few other hard duranies used to love going out and smaking seven bells of shit out of all you ultras, usually at the chipper or at the bus stops, many a midure fan got the millimeter tread on their head from one of my white slip ons, WILB BOYS!

  • You were a Duran Duran fan. And you're coming on like Jack The Ripper. Funny.

Oh and what is a WILB?

  • I'm an ultravox ultra and me and my crew used to hang around outside spandau ballet concerts waiting for victims to wander out. Many's a spand fan got a midge ure tash carved into their top lip thanks to me. Vienaaaaaaaaaaaa!

  • lol

  • Midge Ure. He was gay wasn't he? What did you do twat them with your handbag. I know, those zips can leave a vicious mark right? LOL

  • I remember you! Look it was nearly 30 years ago I'm sure your wounds have healed.

  • People, please stop being ignorant. Synthpop, New Romantic, Dark Wave, and Goth, both are forms of NEW WAVE!! Stop trying to be sooooo unique. Uhhhh, just to add New Wave is a subgroup of PUNK ROCK!!! Guys, grow up and learn your music history.

  • I agree. I was a scruffy 13 year old punk in London when this came out, and it was shocking to see how they dressed, they were so different to anything else; weird kilts, tartan shawls, guitars held so high; they were original, and it was punk.

  • I love this song had my hair cut just like his!

  • perfect example of a band that is wrongly known for one song..TRUE..and although I do like that song....does not represent the band.....this song, Chant no 1, etc...were classic Spandau

  • Exactly the way I've felt since that song, to me this was their best...you ?

  • This track is fucken brilliant!

  • Love New Wave

  • This is Synthpop. This song predates New Wave by a couple years; it's from 1980.

  • No, new wave was round in the late 70s.

  • They started out as New Romantic!

  • Son buenos, pero Duran Duran es mucho mejor.

  • Forza 2020

  • saw them live long time ago.journeys to glory!

  • great tune.....mmmmm i feel old,but can still get hit notes. Merry Christmas folks. x

  • Great tune!

  • what a fab voice tony as got

  • tight track, all downhill musically for these guys after this though, still, hell of a track...

  • I think this song is awesome.

  • I always wondered what was behind the tartan and sporrans with these guys with this song? I don't think this image lasted much beyond this first song, and these guys were north Londoners!

  • i love the way they dressed!

    lol

  • i am a new romantic & loved spandau.....but i am duran duaran through & through

  • New romantic forever!

  • YES! SPANDAU BALLET! YES! *dances*

  • Get Well soon Mr Kemp father of the kemp brothers.

  • Who elese thinks this was thier best song ever?

  • I do and its one of the best songs I like of all time,

its got such a connection to how I was wondering about things back then and then Bang, this song came out, it must be English precoscious or what, I dunno...its Pure

  • eurofunk

  • pegs

  • Thks for this, my fav song of the 80's, i'm afraid I was a real fashion victim and went to a wedding wearing a kilt with a long fringe across my eye. lol!

  • I literally grew my hair for 2 years without a hair cut to achieve that Duran Duran look. 80's fashion victim, that makes two of us...Though they were good times ;-)

  • so...there were guys dressing like that!!!! those haircuts funny, looking back...

  • This song has such a great groove! Awesome

  • shit hot, love the old stuff

  • Takes one to know one! And of course they made alot of money from it... Oh dear who feels a cunt now...?

  • Google 'Blitz Kids' and there's a great geocitie about them

  • As a ballet fan - and someone who went to the same clubs as thedm (LBR) I find it incomprehensible that people acclaim the Durannies in latter years.

It could NEVER have happened if it wasn't for these Islingtonians. Even Danny Baker said so LOL

Incidentally Steve Norman is one of the most underrated musicians of our time - and he's a great guy too.

Look him up on myspace please!

  • Out of all the guys..~I loved Steve the most. Tony Hadley looked like my brother-in-law..so it was "strange" liking him when I was 12! ..The Kemp boys were "pretty" but full of it...Nah...Steve was GORGEOUS!. and i'm nearly 40 and I still think so..yum!

  • aaaaaaaaa i love this sooooong!!

  • great

  • I was brought up on this stuff..

Now I absolutely love it =]

Still hoping for a Spandau Ballet reunion tour or something xD

  • I love New Wave!!! This song SHOULD HAVE reached the top 10 in the U.S. This would be a great track to put on one of those Living in Oblivion or Just Can't Get Enough New Wave Hits of the 80's compilations.

  • 80 has the best music. 2 day's music suck

  • yeah you don,t know wat you missed especially early 80,s

  • Tony Hadley is absolutely gorgeous and has a lovely voice.

Why couldnt i have been a teenager in the 80s?

    Damn it!!!

  • Sorry, the comments editor didn't seem to work and I have posted the same comment four times!!! Shame on me :-(

  • Gorgeous, gorgeous Tony Hadley. I'm speechless.

  • I know! Why didn't I realize it then?

  • Maybe you were too young to conceive mischievous thoughts, and so was I, unfortunately!

  • Great song great band! Miss those days aof really good bands and songs.....

  • True dat!

  • Only the best !

  • I'm gonna make a bold statement here, but this is actually quite a groovy song.

  • That's not bold. It's just the truth!

  • Child.

    >_>

  • I am Beautiful and CLEAN.--- They never lived that down. Loved it all though.

  • Spandau Ballet one of the most under rated bands ever

  • Spandau were really new when this song came out. I love this song! Thank you for posting the video, it's really rare!

  • OMG Does anyone else think Tony Hadley looks just like a young Keanu Reeves in this clip?

Mmmm that soft beautiful shiny chocolate brown hair

  • you're right, he does!

  • How right was AnnieLennox1954, a great decade followed by a shocker!!! Bring back the 80's...

  • I wonder what a 16-year.old girl can know about the 80s...

  • As much as I please to know, which is quite a pantload due to countless hours of research on the subject and thousands of dollars spent on records, tapes, and CDs...

  • That won't never be enough as you didn't "live" those years.

Not your fault of course, but you can get as much stuff as you like but that won't re-produce the atmosphere together with pros and cons.

    My 2 cents.

  • that won't ever, my bad...

  • It's true that I can't re-create the decade down to the last miniscule detail, but that doesn't mean I know little about the decade. What I know and what I've done do know what I know is most certainly "enough" to make an educated comment such as that which spawned this entire conversation. I know a great deal about the 80s, I consider it to be my domain, and I find your conclusion that I'm simply a kid who doesn't know what she's talking about to be wrong. I am done with this conversation.

  • That's what you are for sure and with your last comments you proved it out.

Know what? What a kid says is the truth, what an adult says is an opinion.

    "Feel" the difference, kid.

  • It's pitiable, your thinking that you are so 'cool' because you have disdain for the arts of your own time. Sure, you grew up with Britney and Beyonce, but you've also got the Postal Service,Oval, Andreas Tilliander, Otto Von Schirach, Bats for Lashes and Dresden Dolls. Plus ten thousand other interesting musical artists. When you learn to appreciate the music of the past in context of where it's taken us, then you'll have a valid opinion. Until then, the mall is your domain.

  • Rebecca263, that is the probably one of the best put point of views I've ever heard (and I thoroughly agree with too). Cheers!

  • Me too!

    Excellent opinion.

It's a pity she got her account suspended, who knows why... :(

  • I'd love to know why 3 of the band have guitars???? hahaha even the keyboard player has a guitar strapped to him.

  • You can never have too many guitars!!

  • Gary Kemp was the guitarist, Martin Kemp -bass guitar and Steve Norman was bongos and sax - which aren't in this song so I think they strapped a guitar onto him to mime with ala Andrew Ridgley

  • Amazing how such a vivid and exciting decade like the 1980s was followed by such a wretchedly bland decade like the 90s...

  • There wasn't enough drugs taken in the 90's though.

  • True. Oh, how ashamed I am to be a child of the 90s.... :(

  • Well, Smashing Pumpkins hit the 90s, Manic Street Preachers hit the 90s, Oasis hit the 90s but yet it's a wretchedly bland decade...Mumble, mumble...

  • Those names mean nothing to me... and don't hold a candle to Depeche Mode, Spandau Ballet, Culture Club, Eurythmics, etc.

  • We have different tastes for sure, but you can't say 90s were a blande decade just because you don't like its biggest names.

    I do like
