I admire Camille Paglia, she is gay icon in her own right. However, she was a bit strident commenting that Ellen should have taken her coming out "more seriously". Like what? Go on a lecture tour from one ivory tower to another? This was early/mid- nineties, and considering the show's audience, and television at the time, her coming out was very serious business! Ellen is a pioneer in television history! Kudos Ellen!

There's no way to judge someone like that. Of course everyone hopes to not give a birth to a child that is gay, but those people who discriminate if they had a child that is, what would you do? hate your child forever or leave them and let them be on their own or become an orphan. If you do then you seriously have no heart, you're just to judge I'll bet you anything that people does those kind of stuff, they don't care about no one just themselves.

it was such a difficult thing to do at that time - a popular, funny person from TV watched by entire families, kids, etc. coming out in a society that tends to be SO narrow-minded and ignorant. that required a lot of courage and faith - and she did that in such a good style. some people will never realize it meant the whole life for her and that it wasn't a selfish act, but something that gave a great many people a chance to believe in their rights again.
