  • what do you think of the e-z low whistles where the holes are a little closer together?

  • Love it but it makes me feel like a looser- i m trying to play the thin whistle now for 5 years...well... the result will n ever be like that .. :-(

  • Beautiful expression!

  • I wish, just once, that I could find an Aluminum Viper video or sound clip played without the reverb fanciness in the background. I just want to hear what it sounds like by itself.

  • Very nice. I like it played slow. Very mournful.

  • Very good;) Beautiful melody and sound from your whistle;)

  • your playing is very nice

  • Thanks for straightening that out...there is much more to learn that I thought :)

  • beautiful...I am new to the whistle and just learning through these videos. Interesting to see individual styles of playing. I like to watch technique and I notice you cover the holes more in the middle section of the fingers. Is that a style thing?

  • That's standard Low Whistle grip. The first and fourth holes are covered with the pads of your fingertip. The second, third, fifth and sixth are covered with the area between the first and second joint... Because of the stretch needed for the instrument, people will smaller hands *have* to play like this and it's accepted as proper technique for low whistles.

  • It should also be noted that, when I played this, I was using the incorrect grip for the first and third fingers.

  • That is a Michael Burke and it is $170 (USD). I have one and love it. I carry it with my uilleann pipes so I can play it on occasions. No need to get a Copeland when you have a Burke. Nicely done version on that instrument!!

  • It's actually $280 since it's the Low D Viper. If you get the Low D Viper Pro it's more like $300

  • That's freaking awesome!!! How much did that low whistle cost? And what's the name of it?

    Very nice playing!

  • You're whistle is bigger than mine! I feel quite intimidated... :) Awesome sound!

  • awesome! I just got my whistles in today, one in d and the other in c. Its harder than I thought, being a guitar player for 10 years and then going to a wind instrument. But I just wanted to do something different. I love your instrument. Wish i could play like that. Perhaps with practice, someday.

  • You're awesome, great sound!!!

    Compliments..

  • i like your whistle.

    and your playing!

  • Beautifully played and mellow sound. I like it. I have yet to own a low tin whistle. Did you record this in your office during lunch time? :)

  • This is in my home office after work hours. :) No slacking for me!

  • Nice playing, and also downright useful, for those of us who are shopping for a low whistle.

Do you do The Butterfly slip jig? That's another that sounds great when played slower than folks usually play it.

  • That's one of my favorites, though I generally like to keep it somewhat to tempo, mostly because Irish trad is dance music, slip jigs being one of those types od trad that has to be a certain tempo and have a certain feel for the dancers.

I do play it on the slow side on occasion, though. :)

  • Dude, that is awesome. Sounds great.

  • That sounds so mellow! I love it. It's very different.

  • did you get the viper with the thumb hole?

  • Newp -- my Cnats are fingered OXXXOX.

  • buenisima

  • ***** and favorite for you

  • very beautiful the song and the way you play...hope you watch my videos too...

    congratulations...

  • There is the most beautiful resonance, like an echo, to this song. Is that because you're incredibly skilled, or is it the Burke whistle? I ask because I'm in the market for a low D and want to sound like you!

  • Or maybe it's just the microphone? I hope not!

  • It's called Post-Production. :) I ran the audio through a piece of software that reduces noise, pops and hisses and added a bit of reverb. However, the Burke has that great mellow, haunting, growly low D tone that I love and prefer, even over my Copeland Low D.

  • Aww bummer, I was hoping you had a magical instument! Very well done all the same, it's beautiful!

  • Chade are you using Audacity 1.3.3 ??

  • I use Adobe Audition.

  • Chade2112 what level of reverb are you putting on it ?. I've been trying out diferent levels but it's a very fine balance between sounding good and sounding "false" if you know what I mean.

Thanks for the nice tune, well played :)

  • I know what you mean -- I'm trying to recall, but in Adobe Audition, I believe I used the 'Light Vocal Presence' preset in there. I'm not sure of the exact numbers for it, though.

  • That was quick, I'm on Audition 1.5 I think it has that pre-set. Thanks for the advice, without a backer some of the tunes can be a bit "lonely" and the reverb helps that.

  • That's so beautiful.

  • Lovely...

  • Very good. Fisrt of all, i'm from Turkey and i don't speak english very well. I have a question. Imagine that a whistle. It will be low whistle but its in C. Is it possible? . Thanks already now...

  • Teach me!!! I am going to be getting a tin whistle and a low d whistle and I want to learn soooo bad...I love the slower stuff the more haunting music...Thanks for the video you are an awesome whistle player :D

  • Thanks! I have a website: whistlethis dot com -- teaches lots of songs and has other people to help advise you along the way. :)

  • Nice indeed. Reminds me of seeing an old man sitting in a working man's cafe in the docks in Belfast a long time ago. Nearing the end of his working days, he sang this to himself over a cup of tea. His eyes were miles away and he sang it slowly like an old man would. I knew then he was remembering someone... Thanks for reminding me

  • Hi that really nice but I think you over do it a bit much with the sliding. I love that song though. Well done. Lovely whistle too!

  • o my gar O.O datz so kool luv da sound and shinyness ^^

  • Excellent! Loved it. I love Irish music very much.

  • THIS MAN DESERVES HIGH RATINGS

    luv the way you play

  • Thanks so much... Glad you enjoy it!

  • wonderful!

    i love the slow version

  • Dont know way ratings are so low that was real nice.

  • Thanks -- you know, I logged on one day and *all* of my videos were at a 3 rating. I think YouTube'd f'd something up. ;/

  • sounded awesome, I dont know why the ratings are so low. I play GHBagpipes but Im hopeing to get me one of these bad boys.

  • You know, one day I logged on and every single one of my videos was rated at a 3, so I'm assuming YouTube fub'd up there. Thanks though!

  • Got a Dixon low D and thankfully I can play it. Looking forward to actually playing some nice tunes soon!

  • It is very interesting how to develop the fantasy in use of variations (cut, taps, rolls, crans...)

Have you any hint to offer?

  • Well, crans are generally only done on the Low D there, so no big mystery there. Rolls can be done on phrases that ascend or descend in a step pattern (e.g. def efg fga) and cuts and taps can be put anywhere that just 'sounds good', though people generally have more coordination with their left hand and for me it's easier to do a roll or cut on FED than it is on BAG.

  • Very well!

I'll study very hard it... when i receive it.

I have order the instrument on 16th March, but i havent't received... nothing, yet

  • Ok, thx. I'm an italian flutist. I have bought on ebay, a D whistle. I'll try learn this instrument, using the flute technique, and trying to capture the soul of this music.

The Dixon Alloy High D whistle, is a good instrument? I have bought that!

    THX for the answers.

  • Tony makes some very nice whistles -- I own two of his whistles: A nickel and a brass 'Traditional' in D. These are stellar whistles all around with great sounds... You should do well with a Dixon.

  • sorry, the title of this piece is "star"?

    thx

  • The Star of the County Down -- it's a song.

  • Thanks for that. I'll be getting in touch with the dealer soon.

  • How do I know that? I play flute clarinet and tin whistle at mo. (Guess I'll have to give one of them up, probably the tin whistle)

  • If you have a maker in mind, you can request a rubbing of the body to see where the holes lie or even for the spacings between the holes so you could plot it out on a piece of paper.

  • Must get a low whistle, they are beautiful!

  • Just make sure you have the finger span for it. :)

  • Good Stuff!

  • very nice, i have that whistle. i love it.

  • Isn't it great though? It has some great vocal characteristics... I love how you can almost make it growl and get that sweet chiff in the upper register. I'm currently saving for a Copeland Low D -- $475. Ouch!

  • Lovely! It really is a beautiful piece, perhaps even more so when played slowly!
